Ahadith

It is reported that when the Holy Prophetsaw, with a handful of his ill-equipped Companions, intended to go forth to meet the vastly superior and much better equipped Meccan force at Badr, he consulted them about it. Thereupon one of the Companions stood up and addressed the Holy Prophetsaw in the following memorable words: We would not say to thee, O Prophet of God! As said the companions of Moses, ‘go thou and thy Lord and fight and here we sit’. On the contrary, O Prophet of the Lord, we are ever with thee and we will go with thee whither thou goest. We will fight the enemy on thy right and on thy left and in thy front and behind thy back; and we trust God that thou wilt see from us what will comfort thine eyes. When the Holy Prophetsaw heard these words, his face beamed with delight (Bukhari & Hisham).

Writings of the Promised Messiahas

The true meaning of Bai’at is actually to sell yourself. The blessings and fruits associated with it are contingent only upon this stipulation. For instance, a farmer sows a seed in the earth without knowing its destiny. If the composition of this seed is of high quality and it carries in it the potential to develop and nourish, then it grows with the blessings of God and the efforts of the farmer. One such seed yields thousands of others. Similar is the case of one who performs Bai’at. First and foremost, he must act with absolute humility and modesty and he must abandon selfishness. Subsequently, he attains a status where spiritual growth may be possible. But the one who adopts the way of the selfish after performing Bai’at will never gain the favors and blessings promised by Allah (Malfoozat, Vol. VI, p. 173).

Bai’at actually means surrendering your life to the Will of Allah i.e. selling your own will to Allah Almighty. It is absolutely inconceivable and wrong to think that a person will suffer as a consequence of following the path of Allah. A truthful person will never suffer; only the dishonest will. The one, who breaks his pact made with Allah for worldly gains and peer pressure, must remember that no worldly ruler or king shall come to his rescue on the Day of Reckoning. He shall return to the Master of all Creation, Who shall ask him why he did not fulfill his promise. Therefore, it is incumbent upon every Believer to have complete faith in Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and should sincerely repent his sins (Malfoozat, Vol. VII, pp. 29-30).

Be it known to all sincere ones who have entered into the covenant of Bai’at that the purpose of the covenant is that the love of the world should grow cold and love of God and the Holy Prophetsaw should fill the heart, and the soul should be weaned away from the world, so that the journey to the hereafter should not appear disagreeable. But for the achievement of this purpose it is necessary to spend some time in my company, so that, if God should will, by the witnessing of some sure signs all weaknesses and indifference may be removed (Malfoozat, Vol. 1, pp. 174 – 180). 3 of 60 Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015

Message from National Sadr Lajna Ima’illah, Saliha Malik

My Dear Sisters, The journey to increase in Faith through the practice of Religion is a very personal one and totally dependent on each and everyone’s decision to engage in it, to practice it and in striving to understand it. The Promised Messiahas tells everyone to come and live with him: “…it is necessary to spend some time in my company,” he says, “so that … by witnessing some sure signs all weaknesses and indifference may be removed.” Indeed keeping company with the Messiahas during his lifetime must have had a powerful and dramatic effect on a person and we can only glimpse at that through the various accounts our beloved Huzooratba shares with us in his Khutbaat of the companions of the Promised Messiahas, the Muzzaki (the Purifier). However, we are assured that in keeping our Bai’at – the pledge we have made at the hands of the Promised Messiahas, we may also keep his illuminating and transforming company. As we focus on the Ten Conditions of Bai’at in our Lajna program this year, we can encourage each other to live whole-heartedly in the house of the Messiah. In his Khutba of October 9th 2015 from Nunspeet, Holland, our beloved Huzooratba exhorted us again to forge a sincere bond with the Promised Messiahas, as he has required all his followers to do so: That he/she shall enter into a bond of brotherhood with this humble servant of God, pledging obedience to me in everything good for the sake of God, and remain faithful to it until the day of his/her death. That he/she shall exert such a high devotion in the observance of this bond as is not to be found in any other worldly relationship and connection that demands devoted dutifulness (Tenth Condition of Bai’at). Such a bond reminds us of the memorable words the Companions of the Holy Prophetsaw said to our beloved Mastersaw, “O Prophet of the Lord, we are ever with thee and we will go with thee whither thou goest…. and we trust God that thou wilt see from us what will comfort thine eyes.” Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015 4 of 60 National Correspondence

Selection of Huzoor’satba Sermons

The Essence of being a true Ahmadi Muslim - October 9, 2015 Today's Friday sermon was delivered from Masjid Noor Nunspeet, Holland. The majority of Ahmadis here are either those who were born as Ahmadis or those whose families accepted Ahmadiyyat when they were very small children and as such they grew up in an Ahmadi environment. Also, most of these people are of Pakistani origin, who live here and have been granted citizenship of this country because upon their arrival here they reported that they are not allowed freedom of religion according to the teachings of in Pakistan. Some of these people would have directly faced court proceedings [in Pakistan.] Thus, the majority of people here have been granted permission to reside owing to the compassion of the [Dutch] government because they have declared themselves as Ahmadis. This declaration also places a responsibility on you. Those Ahmadis who have come here by virtue of their academic or other expertise and are associated with the Jama'at are also not exempt from this responsibility. New Ahmadis who join the Jama'at, and are convinced of the claim of the Promised Messiahas are also bound to fulfill the dues of Bai'at. In the sight of God they are not exempt to simply maintain that they did such and such because they saw long term Ahmadis doing it. It is important to understand the commentary and elucidations of the Promised Messiahas of the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah. It is important to study these as they are widely available and no one has any excuse not to. Hazrat Khalifatul Masihatba said to the long term Ahmadis that they are also to blame if anyone stumbles because of their conduct. With the grace of God those whose forefathers became Ahmadis have improved their lives after coming here and they should not forget that they are indebted to the Jama'at for this. As a mark of thanksgiving they should strive to and bring about exceptional pure changes in themselves and should tell their children of God's favors upon them and how they and their children must ever strive to fulfill the pledge of Bai'at made by their forefathers. We are also going to continue to teach our children to be thankful to God for making us financially better off after coming here and tell them that in thankfulness for the academic opportunities they have had they should forge strong connection with the Nizaam of Jama'at and a bond of loyalty and obedience with Khilafat. Likewise it is the obligation of each Ahmadi to always have a strong connection with the Nizaam and a bond of loyalty and obedience with Khilafat, which they pledge during Bai'at. With the grace of God new Ahmadis, especially those who have accepted with complete conviction and insight reflect over their pledge and the conditions of Bai'at and write about this to Huzoor. However, many others who are born Ahmadis or those whose parents accepted Ahmadiyyat when they were children and who are now more inclined to worldly matters neither generally reflect over the conditions of Bai'at nor do they understand the pledge of Bai'at and are not mindful of God's favors on them owing to them being Ahmadis. This is in spite of Bai'at proceedings being broadcast on MTA regularly. They do not make an effort to focus on the significance of Bai'at and putting it in practice, and they also do not forge a connection with Khilafat as is it is due. This is not just about those who have sought political asylum but this is applicable to all Ahmadis. The example of asylum seekers was given earlier because most of the present congregation constitutes of those 7 of 60 Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015

who sought asylum and have improved their lives. Otherwise, such Ahmadis [as I have described] can be found in all sections of the Jama'at. If everyone self-reflects they will see where they stand. This self-reflection and introspection should not be cursory, rather it should be pondered upon and it is auspicious if it concludes in the affirmative, and if not, efforts should be made for self- reformation. In his tenth condition of Bai'at the Promised Messiahas has stipulated: That he/she shall enter into a bond of brotherhood with this humble servant of God, pledging obedience to me in everything good for the sake of God, and remain faithful to it until the day of his/her death. That he/she shall exert such a high devotion in the observance of this bond as is not to be found in any other worldly relationship and connection that demands devoted dutifulness. These words place the responsibility on us to have selfless and intense love for the Promised Messiahas. Here, he takes a pledge from us that for the sake of God we will establish high standards of love, affection and a bond of brotherhood and affirm to always be obedient in every good decision, everything for which the Promised Messiahas was appointed in light of the teachings of Islam. And this obedience would not only be absolute but we would strive to abide by it till our last breath. And the resulting bond will be peerless among all other worldly relationships, including relationships we form out of sincerity as well as relationships we form due to favors others bestow on us. If there could be high standard of love for anyone after the Holy Prophetsaw it has to be with his true and ardent devotee, the Promised Messiahas. In light of this, everyone can analyze our bond with the Promised Messiahas. Are these our standards as well or do we forget these standards in view of personal interests? Do worldly matters overcome this love and obedience? Man acts for gain out of fear, fear of answerability or out of love and sincerity. Those who have correct insight of faith will follow it for love and loyalty. The Promised Messiahas expected us to enhance this sentiment after taking Bai'at. If this sentiment is not there any advice given will have no impact. Can any Ahmadi even imagine that anything the Promised Messiahas said would be contrary to the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah? Most certainly they would not. Therefore, every Ahmadi should understand that 'obedience in everything good' means to be perfectly obedient having taken one's love to the highest level and then look out for every instruction. It is binding on us to look out for what the Promised Messiahas expected of us, and what he instructed us to do. Otherwise we will be merely paying lip service. If we do not even know what the Promised Messiahas said, how can we follow him? We are also required as an Ahmadi to increase our knowledge and implement what we are instructed to do with sincerity. The Promised Messiah'sas advice and instructions can be found in his various books and pronouncements. A few of these are presented today. The Promised Messiahas said: Our Jama'at should not limit itself to mere words but should fulfill the true objective of Bai'at. Inner change should be brought about because you cannot please God Almighty with mere arguments and reasoning. If you do not bring inner changes then there is no difference between you and the others. He also said: Each person should take individual responsibility and fulfill his promise. To believe in the Promised Messiahas on a doctrinal level and accept his truthfulness and silence others with arguments and reasoning comes to nothing if our practice is not right. He said: 'Make endeavors to bring about change in you. Supplicate during Salat, give alms and charity and use all Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015 8 of 60

other means to be among those: 'And as for those who strive in Our path…' (29:70). And this results in '…We will surely guide them in Our ways…' (29:70). The Promised Messiahas also said: 'How can it be possible that a person who is careless and indolent garners God's beneficence just as much as a person who uses all his senses, his strength and sincerity to find Him?' When the Promised Messiahas says to follow him and to be obedient to him, it is so that through him we find the paths to find God and be those who attract Divine grace. Be those who offer Salat on time and with its due requisites, and also give charity and alms to attract Divine love. The Promised Messiahas said: ‘Be mindful of two things. Firstly, be models of true Muslims and secondly, spread the qualities and excellences of Islam in the world.’ If our own knowledge is lacking and our practice is giving cause for concern how can we be true models and how can we talk about excellences of Islam? The Promised Messiahas said that the Jama'at members should be extremely serious in assessing whether they have righteousness or not. We should all self-reflect whether we have more attachment to the world or are we more concerned with improving our faith, both for ourselves and for our children? Do we have fear of God and do we make efforts to attain His pleasure? The Promised Messiahas also said: Avoiding unwarrantable fury and anger is also a branch of righteousness. Those who are this way inclined should ponder over their condition. If we keep these words of advice of the Promised Messiahas in view and reflect and ponder over them, they increase our love and bond with him. Indeed, he agonized over the spiritual state of his Jama'at, he was more anxious than mothers and fathers in this regard and repeatedly advised us in order to lead us away from the wrong path and put us on the right path. After reading about this expression of love and cause for concern there is no reason an Ahmadi would not attain these high standards of a loving bond and obedience with the Promised Messiahas. It is God's favor on us that after the Promised Messiahas, He has established Khilafat among us and Khilafat advances the work that God commissioned the Promised Messiah for. Therefore, by forging a bond of sincerity and obedience with Khilafat we can continue on our [spiritual] journey. As the Promised Messiahas said we should demonstrate models of true Muslims and spread the message of Islam. Ahmadis pledge Bai'at on the hand of the Khalifa of the time and it is also important to fulfill this pledge. Therefore, advice, instructions and programs issued by Khilafat should be implemented in order to fulfill this pledge. Every Ahmadi pledges at the time of Bai'at to abide by the conditions of Bai'at and obey the Khalifa of the time in everything good. The task of Khilafat e Ahmadiyya is to further the task of the Promised Messiahas. With this viewpoint in mind true standards of obedience will be established and there will be unity and avenues of tabligh (propagation of Islam) will open up. However, if everyone declares that he accepts the Promised Messiahas and has a bond with him but then proceeds to prefer his own path, there can be no progress. The beauty of the Jama'at is with Khilafat. And our bond with the Promised Messiahas is by virtue of him being the true and ardent devotee of the Holy Prophetsaw we have to extend this bond with Khilafat as well. A couple of days ago during the reception following the foundation laying ceremony of a Hazrat Khalifatul Masihatba gave a brief address with reference to teachings of Islam, significance of and responsibilities of Ahmadis. A lady guest at the reception commented that the words 9 of 60 Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015

of the Khalifatul Masih were great. What remains to be seen is to what extent will the local Ahmadis practice them to create an atmosphere of love and peace. Indeed, Ahmadis living in the area are under scrutiny. They need to self-reflect as the scrutiny will be that much more intense with reference to Khilafat. Therefore, it is not sufficient to simply make a pledge of Bai'at. Good practice is needed for self-reformation and also for tabligh. In order to have unity and oneness in every place and on every level it is needed that we move at the gesture of one hand; that we obey Khilafat. It is God's great favor that the Jama'at is enabled to utilize modern technology, TV and the Internet for propagation of faith. The written works of the Promised Messiahas are widely available on our web site and can be accessed whenever one wants. They are also translated in major languages of the world. Likewise, the advice of the Khalifa of the time can also be heard and read and is based on the Holy Qur'an, hadith and writings of the Promised Messiahas. MTA is relaying the message all over the world and this has given the Jama'at a new sense of oneness. We should regularly tune into MTA in order to be part of this oneness. At the very least Friday sermon should be listened to every week with special focus. Each family should determine if every member of their family has done so. If the wife listens and the husband does not, it will not help. If the husband listens but the wife and children do not, even then it will not help. Every Ahmadi needs to be part of this arrangement that God has put in place to further facilitate unity and through which the voice of the Khalifa of the time reaches every corner of the world. Attention should be paid to this. If we do not know what is being said how can we obey it? If we listen to these things we will be able to practice obedience. Be watchful for what needs to be obeyed. Otherwise we will simply be making superficial declarations at each Ijtema or at the time of Bai'at 'pledging obedience in everything good' or to 'make every sacrifice for the perpetuation of Ahmadiyya Khilafat.' May God make it so that each family pays attention to this matter and makes full use of this facility [the mosque] that we have been given for tarbiyat (moral training). It is not just a resource for tarbiyat, it is playing a huge role in spreading the teachings of Islam. If for some reason the live broadcast cannot be seen, there are always recordings to avail of and these programs can also be seen on the Internet. While they forge a bond with the Promised Messiahas may everyone also form a strong bond with his Khilafat and demonstrate models of obedience. According to a hadith of the Holy Prophetsaw, may this obedience traverse through obedience of the Holy Prophet and take us to obedience of God and make us seek His pleasure. May God enable everyone to do so! Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015 10 of 60

 The Divine Signs of True Khilafat Jalsa Salana, USA

Saturday August 15, 2015 The Ladies’ Session, presided over by National Sadr Lajna Ima’illah Saliha Malik, started with the recitation of Surah Bani Isra’il verses 62-67, which gave the inspiring message that being a true servant of God protects us from Satan regardless of the temptations. A beautiful poem, Humdo Sana Usi Ko by the Promised Messiahas, was recited. This was followed by three spiritually uplifting speeches with the themes of: The Merciful God- Al Raheem: It corrected the mistaken view that the God of Islam promotes terrorism. On the contrary, God’s greatest attribute of Mercy extends over all and joins with His Loving way of Forgiveness to all who strive to be close to Him. Paradise at your feet: We were reminded of a women’s role in creating Paradise in the home and family by loving Allah above all and being the magnet to bring others to His Light. The beautiful Hadith: ‘Paradise lies at the feet of the mother’ was aptly illuminated by this speech. Then the beautiful poem, Na Rok Rah Mein Maula, by Hazrat Nawab Mubarika Begum Sahiba ra, which is a plea to Allah for acceptance, filled our hearts and minds. The final speech Finding Peace through Simplicity was presented in both English and in Urdu. The speech was very pertinent to the society we live in where by all measures and statistics; man is not content. The speakers reviewed the beautiful teachings of simplicity given in the Holy Qur’an and in the example of the Holy Prophetsaw, which frees us from the snares of materialism and restlessness.

The morning session concluded with various recognitions. Talent Awards were presented to Lajna students for their outstanding academic achievements. Followed by certificates given to four Lajna members who were certified as Holy Qur’an teachers. After this Lajna and Nasirat members, who had made outstanding contributions in the Lajna initiative of Jihad of the Pen, were recognized. Finally, Nasirat members, who had completed the first reading of the Holy Qur’an during the past year were acknowledged and received a copy of the Holy Qur’an signed by Sadr Lajna USA. The afternoon session started with the recitation of the Holy Qur’an, Surah Al Hujarat verses 11-16, which reminded us how to maintain a harmonious society. Two young members from Central Jersey then recited the moving poem Mujhe Dekh, by Hazrat Nawab Mubarika Begum Sahibara. The first speech of the session, Religious Values: do they have a place in today’s world? was an impassioned account from one of our young women on behalf of the young Lajna ages 15-25. Then we heard from one of our very new converts about her inspiring, personal and spiritual journey to Islam, Islam, and Ahmadiyyat…My Choice. It was a great example of the miracle of God’s 11 of 60 Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015

guidance to one who searches for truth. At this point Sadr Sahiba welcomed on stage the sisters who had joined the fold of Ahmadiyyat in the previous year and presented them with a token of appreciation, while in the background three sisters sang a beautiful poem, written in English by a member from Columbus, I Hear the Call. Sadr Lajna USA also took the opportunity to recognize USA Jama’ats oldest member of 102, who was present at Jalsa, our much loved Sister Aliyyah Shaheed, who converted in 1936! The session concluded with Sadr Sahiba’s address entitled, Sisterhood- Beyond Boundaries. Sadr Sahiba focused on Islam’s powerful teaching of an all-pervading brotherhood of man, which demolishes all thoughtless notions of superiority, born of racial arrogance or national conceit, skin color, wealth, rank or social status. God looks at our hearts and actions and tells us that holding fast by His rope all together no matter what our background, removes all boundaries and creates a peaceful society. Sunday August 17, 2015: 67th Jalsa Salana USA concluded on Sunday with a joint morning session delivered from the men’s side and relayed to all. This session had motivational and inspiring speeches on topics including, “Love for Prophet Muhammadsaw – the Gateway to Divine Love”, “Defending the Honor of Prophet Muhammadsaw in America”, and “Zikre-Habib – the ‘Citadel’ of Divine Love in this Age.” The session ended with the closing address by Ameer Jama’at USA and silent prayer. The Jalsa once again provided members a chance to increase our religious knowledge and enhance our spiritually. It was indeed a most uplifting and heart-satisfying occasion, Alhamdulillah! Various Booths at Jalsa Salana: In between the sessions attendees could visit the many booths that were set up. Attendees enjoyed a variety of snacks at the Fundraising booth and purchased clothes, jewelry, and other items at the Handicraft booth. The bookstall provided many Jama’at books for purchase, including new publications. New this year was a small but meaningful book published by Lajna Ima’illah USA, ‘Purdah: the path to success for every Muslim Woman’. Additional booths including those for Waqifat-e-Nau, Humanity First, AMSAW, AWSA Homeopathy, and First Aid rendered services throughout the Jalsa. Special Activities at Jalsa Salana: Lajna Ages 15-25’s Exhibition and Dinner The activities for Lajna 15-25 stall at Jalsa displayed a pictorial exhibit of events and achievements from our young women across the country during 2014-2015, including camps, social gatherings, recreational outings, religious training sessions, and community service projects. They shared this space with AMSAW (Ahmadi Muslim Students Association for Women), which gave out brochures and addressed questions from visitors. The ‘Lajna 15-25’ annual dinner was held on Saturday August 15th. Approximately 150 young women attended, Alhamdulillah! They were given a souvenir key tag which read, “I shall, myself, protect all those who are in this house” with a sketch of Noah’s Ark underneath. Sadr Lajna USA, Saliha Malik, presided over the session, which was conducted by Muavina Sadr in-charge of activities for Lajna 15-25, Ruqaiya Asad. The theme of this year’s discussion was Noah’s Ark and its lessons for youth in today’s community. The presentation opened with the Qur’anic story of Prophet Noah as and his son. The audience was asked to identify the characteristics of Noah’s son and relate them to today’s youth. Next, Prophet Noah’s community on board the ark was discussed. They reflected on the questions: what they would personally give up to be on the ark, and what they would gain? They made a comparison between the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and Prophet Noah’sas community on the ark. They recognized that the Promised Messiah’s as ten conditions of Bai’at constituted his ark and recalled the essential lessons from them. At the end Sadr Sahiba, and Ruqaiya Asad Sahiba answered questions from the girls. The session ended with silent prayer. Waqfe-Nau Booth, Waqfe-Nau Class, and Waqfe-Nau Rededication Workshop The Waqfe Nau Department arranged a Waqfe Nau Booth in the Ladies Jalsa Gah to provide general information for attendees and a special desk on career counseling and guidance to Waqifat. A large number of Jalsa attendees, Waqifat and their mothers and siblings visited the booth. Every visitor at the booth was offered a small gift from a selection, which Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015 12 of 60

included Waqfe Nau fridge-door magnets, crayons, and small notebooks. Waqfeen-e Nau girls of all ages, their mothers, siblings, and local Muavinat Sadrs for Waqifat were invited to attend a special session, which was presided by National Sadr Lajna Ima’illah USA, Saliha Malik. 325 members including about 85 mothers and siblings attended the program. There were presentations on the blessings of being a Waqifa, how to serve the Jama’at as a Waqfe, and Jihad against Immodesty. The final presentation was of one Waqifat’s journey to Umrah and her visits to other holy sites in Saudi Arabia. Respected Sadr Lajna Ima’illah, Saliha Malik concluded the program and highlighted the significance of Modesty and Purdah. She discussed the new Lajna book, which is a collection of Addresses of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh and Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vatba on the topic of Modesty. LAJNA IMA’ILLAH – USA Support Lajna A letter from Sister Aliyyah Shaheed In the name of Allah the Gracious the Merciful, Assalamo Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatahu Dear Sisters! I am very pleased and I feel honored that I was asked to call our attention to the purpose of Ijtema as I attended some of the earlier ones in the USA. The Ijtemas are part of the inheritance of an Ahmadi Muslim - " A Special Legacy" left to us by the Promised Messiahas himself; they are a replica of the Jalsas started by the Promised Messiahas. The real purpose and objective being that the members of our community should cultivate such a change within ourselves that our hearts are ever inclined to the Hereafter and the fear (of displeasing) Allah takes root in our hearts and we become models of piety, righteousness, sympathy and tenderness. [Moreover] we become models of a sisterhood that will provide enthusiasm for establishing the spirit of humility and hospitality and for giving service to our faith that is pleasing to Allah. In 1922, our beloved Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmood Ahmadra - the illustrious son of the Promised Messiahas - addressed the women of the community and he told them that as far as he could see they had not realized what Islam demanded of them - that is how they should lead their lives to win the pleasure of Allah. This was when Lajna was born. 1. The purpose and aim was for the women to become organized to achieve all around advancement for Ahmadi women. 2. To excel in their education in both Spiritual and Material fields with special attention toward learning the Holy Qur’an and understanding the Islamic teaching as interpreted by the Promised Messiahas 3. To Inculcate love and the spirit of Islam and Ahmadiyyat in the minds of our children and to train them accordingly to Islamic teachings 4. To propagate Islam and Ahmadiyyat everywhere. We are the result of that famous [historic] address. There are many prophecies relating to Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II; one of the prophesies relates that His advent would be a manifestation of Divine Glory, he would be anointed with the Scent of Allah's Pleasure and Allah would infuse His spirit into him and he would be under Allah's protection. His fame would spread to the four corners of the Earth and nations would be blessed through him. Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015 14 of 60

Before you today is a fulfillment of the prophecy that his fame would spread to the corners of the Earth, having accepted Islam through Ahmadiyyat in 1936 - [now 79 years ago] makes me a recipient of that prophecy. Our assemblage here, our programs are other fulfillments of that prophesy and our Ijtemas are similar wherever there is an Ahmadiyyat Jama'at. Many of us look forward to these meetings, the purpose is simply to win the pleasure of Allah - hoping that Allah through His Grace will help us find that Spiritual Bliss that entertains the heart and soul through praying together, seeking the nearness of Allah, asking His forgiveness, requesting that He save our lives from becoming useless and to keep us under His protection against Satanic forces. I pray: Allah as we pray together before you to let us feel Thy Nearness. I beg Thee to help us to overcome our weaknesses, negligence, shortcomings, faults, and sins. Take our hands in Your Hand, fill our empty hands with Thy Love and Mercy - O Gracious Lord. May Thy Glory and the Glory of the Holy Prophetsaw shine within us, so that all of our actions will illuminate our activities in our meetings. Ameen. This Ijtema [gathering] also fosters a spirit of sisterhood. We meet new sisters and get to know each other. We establish a relationship that can benefit individuals as well as our Jama’ats. They also tend to serve as Spiritual Food that stimulates refreshes and strengthens our hearts and souls. Another purpose of attending Lajna Ijtema is that all of us may become motivated to work in unity and gain a sacrificing spirit that will help us to push Lajna USA forward so that the beauty of Islam Ahmadiyyat may be realized and reflected in "All of Us." Because the Spirit of Sacrifice brings about, "Right Action", "Right Thinking", and "Right Feeling" which will Insh’Allah lead to Love for All, Hatred for None. Jazaka’Mullah, Aliyyah Shaheed August 14, 1999 P.S. I have now reached 102 years! I was born on July 12, 1913. I have health issues but Alhamdulillah I am deeply grateful that I can still communicate with our beloved Huzooratba and those in authority and my dear sisters for 79 years as an Ahmadi Muslim. Dinner Reception for Sayyeda Apa Tahira Saddiqa Begum Sahiba With the Grace of Allah, Central Region Amilah members were blessed with the opportunity to host a dinner reception for respected Sayyeda Apa Tahira Saddiqa Begum Sahiba (wife of late Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad Sahib, Khalifatul Masih IIIra). This auspicious event took place on August 7, 2015 at Masjid Mubarak in Chantilly, Virginia and was attended by a total of 135 Lajna members from 9 Majalis from the Central region. In her address to Lajna, respected Apa Tahira Saddiqa Sahiba shared some important advice and words of wisdom for us to ponder upon and practice in our lives. Below is a summarized list of these valuable points:

15 of 60 Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015

Develop the Love for Allah in your hearts and give precedence to your relationship with Allah over all worldly relations. The Promised Messiahas was an excellent example for us to follow. He fulfilled his duties towards his family and friends, but nothing overcame the love he had for Allah. At the death of his young son, he mourned only for a few minutes and accepted Allah’s will with patience and carried on with his daily routines. Hence, Lajna should strive to build a strong relationship with Allah and maintain it. We have just experienced the blessings of Ramadhan; hence we should be mindful of our prayers, and not become careless of saying our prayers as soon as the month ends. By constantly guarding our prayers, we will inculcate love of Allah in our hearts and when we are tested with hardship, we will be able to show perseverance and take actions that please Allah. Keep a keen eye on your children’s tarbiyat; they are the future of the Jama’at. Uphold your responsibilities as an office holder. It is the duty of an office holder to uphold due diligence of her office and give Jama’at work precedence. In addition, maintain humility, an office holder should always self-reflect and never think highly of herself, because they are role models for their subordinates and the rest of the Lajna members. Help out with even the smallest tasks and never show pride in your office. Be just in your dealings with others as officeholders as this can push those who are not strong in their faith away from the Nizam. Keep your anger under control and remain patient in all your dealings with Lajna. Use Lajna funds wisely; do not waste money, neither be ungenerous. Do not waste your valuable time on idle things. Understand the importance of Khilafat, as it is a great blessing. It is the new world order that has been established by Allah. We need to show obedience to Khilafat in order to gain success that Allah has promised us. Listen and adhere to every command of the Khalifa and implement his advice in your lives. Install MTA in your homes and watch it with your families. As officeholders, it is very important to watch MTA because it is a treasure house of knowledge. MTA offers a variety of interesting programs of high quality. In addition, it keeps you connected to Khilafat as you can follow Huzoor’s activities when he is abroad on trips. Similarly, when he gives an instruction in his sermons or addresses, you are able to hear it and implement it right away. Overall, watching MTA is very important; in Pakistan we challenged all Lajna members to keep MTA on throughout the day and eventually, Lajna members began to enjoy watching MTA programs. May Allah enable us to follow this advice and practice it in our lives. May Allah give us the strength to become true maidservants of Allah and forgive our shortcomings, Ameen. Following this very encouraging speech, there was a question and answer session, Salat and dinner. Attendance was approximately 135 Lajna from 9 Majaalis. Jalsa UK 2015 Impressions Sadr Lajna Ima’illah, together with 42 American sisters and children from various Majalis throughout USA, attended the UK Jalsa as members of the USA Delegates this year. Together with our American brothers, there were close to 100 delegates from USA again. We were deeply moved by the hospitality, the practical demonstration of unity amongst people from all over the world coming together in love and harmony and the inspiring speeches. In particular, the International Bai’at was most moving and confirmed our commitment to faith. After the Jalsa all the delegates attended a Mulaqat with Huzooratba. It was a wonderful, memorable occasion to sit in Huzoor’s blessed company and feel his encouragement. Everyone spoke of their deep gratitude for having accepted the Messiahas and for being an Ahmadi. Most of the delegates stayed on to attend the Jumu’ah Prayer at Bait ul Futuh the following Friday.

Following are some of the impressions from the Delegates:

What a wonderful, spiritual sendoff we experienced everyday as we emerged from prayers with our brothers and sisters from diverse corners of the world. When we re- turned in the evenings, the missionaries greeted us with smiles, food and whatever else we required. Huzoor’satba speeches especially, and those from the many presenters, were extraordinary! The Bai’at ceremony was most compelling! 17 of 60 Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015

I do not have the words to describe the hospitality of the UK Jama’at. I was overwhelmed with feel- ings of love and brotherhood. All the workers humbly and most lovingly carried out their duties, always smiling. May Allah reward them all with His Choicest blessings, Ameen. This Jalsa has had such a profound affect on me, and I sincerely pray that I do not lose this heightened level of spirituality.

We witnessed diversity, dedication, sacrifices, The sheer magnitude of the Jalsa sight, the unity and love under the umbrella of Ahmadiy- selfless, dedicated volunteers, excellent yat Islam. The UK Jalsa gave us an identity in hospitality, the LOVE was like magnet! It this world and strengthened our understanding was incredible! of Ahmadiyyat, Jazak’Allah.

By the grace of Allah, the UK Jalsa was my first opportunity as a new member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community to share the blessings of this unforgettable event. Memories rise again and again in my mind; feelings come and go in my heart. Meeting our beloved Huzooratba with the U. S. dele- gation was an especially powerful experience. His witty discourse, humor, compassion, and humil- ity created a memory I will carry with me always. At the Jamia, I shared a room with sisters from Ghana, Kazakhstan, Russia, Morocco, and the USA. - we quickly became friends. Jalsa UK is a shining example of the Ahmadiyya Muslim commu- nity; peace-loving people from all parts of the world living and working together, honoring of our faith, and the dear cause of Islam. The third quarter of the Tarbiyat syllabus covers the 2nd Condition of Bai‘at. That he/she shall keep away from falsehood, fornication/adultery, trespasses of the eye, debauchery, dissipation, cruelty, dishonesty, mischief and rebellion; and that he/she will not permit himself/herself to be carried away by passions, however strong they might be. Nine kinds of sins are mentioned in this Condition, and the Promised Messiahas has very strongly warned his Jama'at to keep away from these sins. However, the society we live in has become almost impervious to the terrible effects of these sins on the society. Falsehood, adultery, trespasses of the eye, debauchery and dishonesty are so prevalent that they have become part of the culture; thus there is a real danger that we may also become somewhat desensitized to these immoralities with the result that our children may be influenced by them. Therefore, we have to beseech Allah Ta'ala’s help to protect ourselves and our children from being influenced by these immoralities in society. The Holy Prophetsaw has provided us with prayers for this purpose:

(Meshka-tul Masabeeh-Bab Jame’ud Du’a with reference to Adda’watul kabir Baahqi) O Allah! Purify my heart from malice, actions from vanity, tongue from lies and eyes from deceit. You alone are aware of the deceitful eyes and secrets of the hearts

O Allah! Instill your fear in my soul, purify it as You are best of those who purify. You are its Master and Guardian.

Khidmat-e-Khalq Matters

By the grace of Allah, Lajna USA continues to serve humanity and thus excel in promoting the message of Islam. Some of the chapter highlights for the months of July, August, and September are noted below. Kishwar Tahir National Khidmat-e- Khalq Secretary

Zion, IL: “And they feed, for love of Him, the poor, the orphan, and the prisoner; Saying, We feed you for Allah’s pleasure only. We desire no reward, nor thanks from you” (Holy Qur’an 76:9-10). Lajna Ima’illah of Zion, Illinois organized their second “Feed the Hungry” event on July 25, 2015 at the Zion Mission House supported by the Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) and financed by Zion Jama’at. With the Grace and Mercy of Allah, 564 individuals were served (162 families) in the parking lot of the Zion Mosque, Alhamdulillah.

Lajna members notified community residents of the “Feed the Hungry” event by distributing flyers, sending emails to the local social service agencies and also announcing it on the message board outside our Mosque. Zion Township, A Safe Place and PADS Homeless Shelter to name a few were part of the groups that benefitted from this service.

Saturday, July 25, 2013 at the Zion Mosque; “Feed the Hungry” began with Zuhr & Asr prayer. We also concluded our “Camp Bismillah” with a BBQ picnic for the parents of the Campers and the local community members on the same day. The NIFB provided the food delivered by a refrigerated truck to the Mosque. They also provided guidelines for the set-up and distribution of food. We had 20 volunteers to operate the event and a total of 45 Jama’at members volunteered for four hours for this humble cause; unloading the truck, setting up the tables and food items, registering individuals for food pick-up, providing seating and water to the community, assisting them carry their food items, cleaning up the area and building relationships with the community, Mash’Allah.

Due to our good faith efforts in serving with other organizations, 9 non-Ahmadi members also volunteered to help. In addition, Jewel Grocery Store donated three shopping carts for us to use for assisting the people.

We purchased $1,200.00 worth of food through and delivered by the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Individuals were able to receive nutritious foods such as sweet potatoes, carrots, bagged salads, bread, non-perishable items, cereals and frozen foods.

Allah’s angels had to be at the little Zion Mosque located on the corner of 2103 Gabriel because even with the scorching heat, everyone was in good spirits.

Detroit, MI: Over the month of Ramadhan, Detroit Lajna and Nasirat members helped in collecting items to donate to the Haven Women’s Shelter. This shelter supports abused women by providing household items for single mothers to take care of their children. They collected items specifically asked for, including diapers, strollers, brooms, clothing, and of course, food. Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015 24 of 60

Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015 28 of 60 Tabligh Matters

“Lord, bestow upon us special mercy from Thyself and provide for us the right guidance in our affairs” Al Kahf, 18:11. The goal this quarter from the Lajna Tabligh program is for Lajna members to learn and demonstrate effective principals of Tabligh. Mash’Allah, Lajna Ima’illah USA was able to deliver beautiful messages of Islam to the public this quarter. I have observed that our members have become more proficient in approaching people with love and compassion and adapting the delivery of the message of Islam according to the circumstances that they are in at any particular time. Alhamdulillah, as we can see from the activities highlighted below, the public was receptive to the beautiful message of Islam.

Dhiya Tahira Bakr National Tabligh Secretary

National: A delegation consisting of six National Aamilah members participated in a historical roundtable discussion with Congressman Mike Honda on Saturday, August 15 during jalsa. The main topic was the position of women in Islam. Lajna publications such as the Annual report, “Pathway to Paradise” and “Purdah: the path to success for every Muslim woman” were presented to the Congressman. He particularly appreciated the books as he was keen to understand the Islamic teachings.

REPORT ON THE LAJNA DAY ON THE HILL Alhamdulillah, Lajna Ima’illah USA held the first ever visit to Capitol Hill, Washington DC, on September 11, 2015, with the message of our community’s peaceful agenda, which saves our members from radicalization. A blood drive was also held that day at Capitol Hill to promote our practice of serving mankind: we give life; we do not take life. A banner of our motto was also hung up in the entrance and clear to see: ‘Love for all, hatred for none’. 29 of 60 Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015

National Secretary Waqf-e-Jadid, Shazia Sohail Sahiba, also serving as Lajna Liaison for the National Public Affairs department, organized this event in great detail together with her team of helpers. A total of 60 Lajna members went on this trip from different Majalis all over USA. Each member had their scheduled appointment to meet with their representative.

In preparation for the meeting, Lajna members attended a conference call webinar to focus attention on the content of their dialogue with their assigned representative. The Lajna PA team prepared a concise folder highlighting the important points to be conveyed:

 We are Muslims who believe in the Messiah.  The Promised Messiahas denounced violent Jihad from the inception of our Ahmadiyya Community.  A compelling page in the folder illustrated the rapid growth of our community from very humble beginnings, which could only have been achieved through the Help and Support of God alone.  We are united by true Khilafat.  The work of Lajna Ima’illah USA includes:  Moral and spiritual training of members and children  ‘Service to humanity’ – we actively engage in all kinds of community service  We are loyal to our country  Concerned about radicalization - we believe our practice of unity and service saves our members from being drawn into this nightmare.

Local Sadrs or their representatives prepared a page for their folder on the activities they have been doing recently in the vicinity of their local Majlis. The meetings with Congressmen or their staffers were very successful. Some of the Lajna members were required to explain often held, challenging misconceptions about Islam. Those who could also donate blood at the blood drive did so. The Media Watch team was there to arrange interviews with the press.

All the members gathered at Bait ur Rehman the evening before affording an opportunity for final questions and preparedness. Early the next morning after Fajr Prayer everyone boarded the bus to go to Capitol Hill. Everyone was given precise directions regarding their scheduled interviews or how to arrange an interview upon arrival. Everyone had their folder on our community and the book ‘World Crisis and Pathway to Peace’ to hand to their congressman. At Capitol Hill a group photo was taken to commemorate the occasion. Then all dispersed to do their work.

 Sadr Lajna Ima’illah, Saliha Malik Sahiba, had a special meeting with our Caucus leaders Congresswoman Jackie Speier and Congressman Ted Poe. Congressman Keith Ellison, Congresswoman Eddie Johnson, Reva Price, who is the Outreach Director and Advisor to Leader Nancy Pelosi, and other staffers also came to dialogue with Sadr Sahiba. She emphasized the Promised Messiah’sas teachings on Peace at all levels for mankind, as he was the ardent follower of the Holy Prophetsaw and the true Islam. She also explained how to recognize the Promised Messiahas as a true prophet of God. National Secretary Tabligh, Dhiya Bakr, National Secretary Tarbiyat Nau Mubaiyat, Nusrat Bashir, National Secretary Waqfe Jadid, Shazia Sohail and two other American members were together with Sadr Sahiba for this meeting.

It was most heart warming to see a substantial group of Muslim women all observant of their Hijab and modest coat, of many different backgrounds, who had travelled from all over America, walking in one step to announce the work of the Messiah at Capitol Hill. May Allah bless and augment all our efforts and grant us His Helping Power and His Loving Grace and Mercy. Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015 30 of 60

Chicago East, IL:

Chicago East Lajna organized and participated in a five hour Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification class at Al Sadiq Mosque. By the grace of Allah, 12 members fully benefit from this class.

Two female instructors were invited to teach the course: one was a CPR Certified instructor by AHA (American Heart Association) and a Retired Paramedic, The other was a RN (Registered Nurse) with over 25 years of experience.

Class members were taught various crucial skills:

 Proper hand washing technique: we learned that to wash hands properly entails about 10-12 steps.  Different life threating situations such as heart attacks, stroke, asthma attacks, etc. that we might face more commonly.  How to properly put on and remove gloves so as not touch any of the bacteria or germs that are on the gloves.  How to assist a choking infant and/or adult. Members practiced on infant sized mannequins to get hands- on training. The methodologies to treat an adult, child, or infant are all different. It was interesting to see how many maneuvers are required to save a baby versus treating an adult.  How to handle an adult or child suffering from a heart attack. In this lesson we learned how important it is to react quickly in such a life- threatening situation. Sisters practiced on adult and child sized mannequins to get a real idea of how much effort it takes to provide CPR.  How to utilize an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to provide shocks in the case of a heart attack. We were constantly reminded to ensure that we take on a role of leadership and assign tasks to others around us, especially when providing CPR.  We were advised us to keep one AED device with a first aid kit at the Mosque. This is especially useful for us since we have people of all ages coming to the mosque frequently.  How to treat day-to-day injuries such as burns, bites (dog bites, mosquito bites), heat strokes, allergies, etc. We received hands on training on how to use an EpiPen in the case of a severe allergic reaction. Sisters also worked in pairs to practice bandaging burns.

Alhamdulillah, all 12 sisters were CPR certified for the period of two years after completing the 5 hours training and were issued ID’s. Overall, the CPR class was an excellent and informative experience. Everyone enjoyed it and learned many lifesaving skills. Sisters were very appreciative and thankful for the instructors taking time out on a Saturday to teach this class, and presented them with bouquets of flowers.

Cypress Houston, TX:

An interactive panel discussion with video skits on ‘Hold fast, all together, by the rope of Allah and be not divided’ addressed how cultural differences create divisions and gave us excellent material for self-reformation. Respected Sadr Lajna Ima’illah, Saliha Malik Sahiba, gave the closing speech on the same topic. She emphasized the need to strengthen our love for Allah, which naturally gives rise to love for all mankind. She ended with the powerful words of Promised Messiahas from ‘Our Teaching’ including: “Though truthful and justified in your stand, be humble in your demeanor as though you were in the wrong, so that you yourself should be treated with forgiveness.” During Lunch and dinner breaks on all three days there were handicraft and fundraising stalls, which were very successful and enjoyable. With an impressive attendance, the Ijtema was a wonderful event: Informative, uplifting, bonding and enjoyable. Alhamduliallah! May Allah bless all who participated and all who served, Ameen. 43 of 60 Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015

Queens, NY:

During Jalsa Salana USA, 2015, members volunteered in different departments such as Security, Bookstall, Ziafat, Discipline, etc.

The preparation for the national Waqf-e-Nau girl’s camp began right after Ramadhan. Members from Queens Majalis came to the mosque daily to clean up, as well as to prepare material for the camp. The Muavina Waqf-e-Nau Secretary, Qudsia Ghayur Sahiba, and the Queens Sadr Lajna, Asifa Mahmood Sahiba put in a great effort to make sure that the camp was successful. Both ladies worked day and night in preparing for the camp. During the camp various teams from all three auxiliaries worked continuously to ensure that everything ran smoothly, including Ziafat, security, cleaning, and hospitality. All members worked extremely hard.

Detroit, MI:

Over the month of Ramadhan, Detroit Lajna and Nasirat members helped in collecting items to donate to the Haven Women’s Shelter. This shelter supports abused women by providing household items for single mothers to take care of their children. They collected items specifically asked for, including diapers, strollers, brooms, clothing, and of course, food.

Lajna and Nasirat members were able to attend all three Jalsa Salana’s this year. Many members attended US Jalsa and worked in the children’s Jalsa-Gah or amongst the MTA team. Lajna ages 15 – 25 also took part in the interactive discussion with National Sadr Sahiba. Some families also enjoyed Canada’s Jalsa Salana, and some were able to go to UK Jalsa Salana. Saying their prayers behind Ameer ul Momineen, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Khamisatba was a great blessing.

In September, we started a new English translation of the Holy Qur’an class for the Lajna and Nasirat prompted by the Al-Furqan administration, and many members were able to learn and participate in this program. They are covering the translation of Surah Al-Baqarah. Insh’Allah, the class will be a great help to our Lajna and Nasirat members and will act as a stepping-stone towards a deeper understanding of the Qur’an.

Detroit member creates children’s prayer Book: Over a course of a few years, Sister Atiya Latif personally wrote and illustrated an interactive prayer book for children. The book is titled ‘Islamic Prayers for Kids’. Recently, Sister Atiya was able to have the book published in bulk. The books were available for sale at this year’s jalsa. Alhamdulillah all copies of the book were sold within the first day of the Jalsa. The book includes a set of prayers to be said throughout the day along with buttons, that when pressed, will read the Arabic words and the translation of the prayer to you. Additionally, the illustrations include pictures of some of our pre-Nasirat and pre-Atfal members. We pray that, by the grace of Allah the book will encourage children to learn different prayers in a fun and interactive way. Lajna Matters 4th Quarter Issue, 2015 44 of 60

Orlando, FL: Alhamdulillah, Orlando’s youngest Nasirat Nabeeha Tahir Ahmed won first place at the Abdus Salam Science Fair at this year’s USA Jalsa! Below is her speech which she presented to the judges. Assalamo Alaikum, My name is Nabeeha Tahir Ahmed. I am seven and a half years old. I am from Orlando Jama’at and I am the youngest Nasirat member in Orlando, FL Majlis. I am also a Waqfe Nau. I wanted to make a poster for the US Jalsa, so our Local Sadr Sahiba told us about the Abdus Salam Science Fair. The title of my science project for the Abdus Salam Science Fair is “The Holy Qur’an and Cosmology.” We really like to watch videos about the universe with our Dad, so my Mom thought that this would be a fun project for me. My mom helped me a lot on this project. She got most of the information from Khalifa IV’srh book, “Revelation, Rationality, Knowledge and Truth.” The Holy Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammadsaw over 1400 years ago. There are so many verses of the Holy Qur’an that talk about the universe. Scientists have found these discoveries only much recently. This shows that the Qur’an is the truth sent from our Living God. The Holy Qur’an mentions that Allah is the Lord of All the Worlds. There are millions of stars, planets, solar systems and galaxies. So Allah is the Lord of all those worlds, and other worlds that we don’t even know exist. The Qur’an also mentions that the universe started with a Big Bang, and it says that the universe is still expanding. The Qur’an says that all heavenly objects are in motion along an orbit. The sun, the moon, the planets are all moving. Even galaxies orbit around a center. The Qur’an prophesizes that the sun will die one day. Many changes will take place on Earth when the sun starts to die off. About the end of the universe, the Qur’an says that the universe will be rolled up like in a black hole. Scientists call this the Big Crunch. The Qur’an also prophesizes that there is life in other parts of the universe, and that one day, we will make contact with them. Scientists have found some planets which may hold liquid water, and which are similar to Earth. So maybe they will find some alien life soon! Jazak’Allah. Houston North, TX: Nasirat took part in a 3-day Spiritual Fitness Camp organized by the National Tarbiyat department. The girls took part in workshops and discussed the correct reading of the Holy Qur’an, truthfulness, how science supports Islam, how Islam refutes Atheism, Social Media and its effects, Marriage in Islam, Etiquette of Wudhu and Salat together with a practical demonstration of these.
