Einleitende Bemerkungen Am 8. November 1868 trifft Nietzsche in Leipzig anlässlich einer Auffüh- rung der Meistersinger zum ersten Mal Richard Wagner. Am 13. Februar 1883 stirbt Wagner in Venedig – Daten, die vielleicht Anlass für besonderes Ge- denken geben könnten. Es wären nach dem ersten Ereignis 135 Jahre, nach dem zweiten 120 Jahre verflossen, also keine symbolischen Zahlen, die zu besonderen Feiern Anlass geben könnten. Die Tagung der „Stiftung Lu- cerna“ vom 23. bis 24. September 2003 war also keine Gedenkfeier. Sie soll der Aufklärung über Nietzsche und Wagner und über deren Verhältnis und dessen Folgen gewidmet sein. Beide Geistesgrössen erfahren heute unterschiedlich intensive Aufmerksamkeit. Nietzsche rückte als Kultfigur ins Zentrum des Diskurses über Moderne und Postmoderne. Richard Wagners Musik besitzt nach wie vor grosse Faszination, doch um seine musikphilosophischen und politisch- theologischen Schriften und damit auch um seine geistesgeschichtliche Stellung kümmert man sich wenig; wegen seines Antisemitismus werden viele Aspekte seines Werkes ausgeblendet. Auch bei der Rezeption Nietzsches sind Ungleichgewichte und Ausblendungen zu beobachten. Dem experimentellen Philosophen, Dichter und grandiosen Stilisten zollt man Lob, doch seine Ablehnung der Moderne und des Sozialismus, sein Eintreten für Adel und Sklaverei, wie auch seine Opposition gegen das Christentum werden verharmlost. Sein Verhältnis zu Richard Wagner und seine Abhängigkeit von Cosima Wagner werden oft nur psychologisch interpretiert. Wie geprägt Nietzsche selbst durch den von ihm zuerst beinahe als einen Gott verehrten Musiker und Schriftsteller Wagner sein Leben lang blieb, wird nicht dadurch erhellt, indem man allein auf jene Schriften zurückgreift, in denen er selbst seine Ablehnung und Wandlung aufzuarbeiten versuchte. Der früh berufene Basler Philologieprofessor Nietzsche, mit Jahrgang 7 1844, trifft zum ersten Mal 1868 mit Wagner zusammen. Die politisch-revo- lutionären Ereignisse, in die der berühmte Komponist einmal höchst aktiv verwickelt war, sind für ihn bereits Geschichte. Die gescheiterte Revolution von 1848/1849 und die utopischen Hoffnungen, die in ihr virulent wurden, sind Nietzsche nicht mehr lebendig. Auch das Medium linkshegelianischen Philosophierens –, man denke an Ludwig Feuerbach, Karl Marx und Moses Hess, – ist ihm fremd. Er trifft auf einen Wagner, der die philosophischen Grundideen Ludwig Feuerbachs in einen moderaten Schopenhauerianismus verwandelte und seine revolutionären Utopien in einen ästhetischen Bereich transferierte, der zwar in einem übertragenen Sinn auch politisch, doch für die Tagespolitik irrelevant war. Die Gründung des Deutschen Kaiserreichs unter der Führung Preussens, 1871 ausgerufen im Versailler Spiegelsaal, und die Grundsteinlegung für das Festspielhaus in Bayreuth im Jahre 1872 sind, gemessen am politischen Gewicht, zwar nicht vergleichbar, doch symbo- lisch miteinander verbunden. In den folgenden Jahrzehnten spielt sich eine – von der Tagespolitik eigentlich unbemerkte – Antithetik zwischen realer deutscher Machtpolitik und der Fiktion einer ästhetischen Weltordnung ab. Dass nach 1878, d. h. nach zwei Attentaten auf Kaiser Wilhelm I., nach der Einführung von Schutzzöllen und den Sozialistengesetzen Bismarcks, dann auch bedingt durch den verschärften Kulturkampf, eine schon nach 1849 einsetzende akademische Repression überdeutlich wurde, ist auch für die deutschsprachige Philosophie nicht folgenlos geblieben. Man möchte beifü- gen: bis auf den heutigen Tag. Die Gründe liegen eigentlich auf der Hand. Hegels Philosophie war damals schon verpönt, zum angeblich „toten Hund“ erklärt, aber vor allem als zu revolutionär verdächtigt und (verbunden mit dem Versuch von 1848/1849, die Demokratie einzuführen), als politisch links diffamiert – dies trotz einer so genannten «rechtshegelianischen» Bewegung. Dies dürfte einer der Hintergründe sein für die oft gedankenlos zitierte Rede vom «Zusammenbruch des deutschen spekulativen Idealismus». Die Philosophie zog sich als politisch gebeutelte Institution auf neutrales Gelände zurück, also auf Neukantianismus, Neuaristotelismus, Neu- thomismus, Wissenschaftskritik, Geschichtsphilosophie und Materialismus. Zudem konnte sie den vom grossen technisch-industriellen Aufbruch 8 mitgetragenen Naturwissenschaften angeblich nichts Gleichwertiges mehr an die Seite stellen. Der in den universitären Institutionen etablierten Philosophie erwuchsen in philosophisch wenig universal bewanderten Geistern wie eben in Nietzsche, Darwin, Marx und Freud eigentliche Gegenphilosophien, auf die sich heute paradoxerweise die akademisch institutionalisierte Philosophie abstützt. Notes and Discussions Nietzsche and Aestheticism 1o Alexander Nehamas's Nietzsche: L~fe as Literature' has enjoyed an enthusiastic reception since its publication in 1985 . Reviewed in a wide array of scholarly journals and even in the popular press, the book has won praise nearly everywhere and has already earned for Nehamas--at least in the intellectual community at large--the reputation as the preeminent American Nietzsche scholar. At least two features of the book may help explain this phenomenon. First, Nehamas's Nietzsche is an imaginative synthesis of several important currents in recent Nietzsche commentary, reflecting the influence of writers like Jacques Der- rida, Sarah Kofman, Paul De Man, and Richard Rorty. These authors figure, often by name, throughout Nehamas's book; and it is perhaps Nehamas's most important achievement to have offered a reading of Nietzsche that incorporates the insights of these writers while surpassing them all in the philosophical ingenuity with which this style of interpreting Nietzsche is developed. The high profile that many of these thinkers now enjoy on the intellectual landscape accounts in part for the reception accorded the "Nietzsche" they so deeply influenced.

An Insight into Nietzsche’s Perspectivist Aesthetics MARGUS VIHALEM The article focuses on the basic assumptions of Nietzschean aesthetics, arguing that Nietzsche’s aesthetics in his later period cannot be thoroughly understood outside of the context of the long-term conflict with romanticist ideals and without considering Arthur Schopenhauer’s and Richard Wagner’s aesthetic and metaphysical positions. Nietzsche’s thinking on art and aesthetics is in fact inseparable from his philosophical standpoint, which complements and renders explicit the hidden meaning of his considerations on art. The article pays particular attention to Nietzsche’s writings on Wagner and Wagnerism and attempts to show that the ideas expressed in these writings form the very basis of Nietzschean aesthetics and, to some extent, had a remarkable impact on his whole philosophy. The article also argues that Nietzsche’s aesthetics may even be regarded, to a certain extent, as the cornerstone of his philosophical project. On the other, it is a genre that has been continually replicated, revered, and even enjoyed since the ancient Greeks. Writers like Aeschylus, Sophocles, Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Beckett hold a place of high regard—they are authors of important works and worthy of our attention. In contemporary aesthetics, this problem is referred to as the paradox of tragedy. This, though, is not a new problem. Instead, philosophers since Aristotle have asked why we, the human species, create, seek out, contemplate, and take pleasure in tragedy. In my dissertation, I examine Nietzsche’s response to this problem in The Birth of Tragedy. His answer is as simple as it is subtle: tragedy is valuable because it allows us to affirm life. In his 1872 work, Nietzsche argues that tragedy was born out of the ancient Greek’s need to affirm life in the face of suffering. However, he is not entirely clear how, exactly, this affirmation is supposed to work.

    Nietzsche on Art Selections from Later Writings In Nietzsche’s later writings we continue to see the theme of the importance of art. Though no longer presented in the terms of The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche continues to stress the healing capacity of art through the creation of beautiful illusions without which we could not live (what in The Birth of Tragedy was called the Apollinian art drive). Nietzsche will continue to refer to the Dionysian in many important passages in his very last writings, though what Nietzsche means by the Dionysian here is perhaps best understood not as what he characterized as Dionysian in The Birth of Tragedy but rather as the product of that miraculous coupling of Apollinian and Dionysian drives in the earlier text. In other words, the Dionysian in the later Nietzsche, Edvard Munch, 1906 writings seems to refer to what he regarded as the highest aim of art revealed in Greek tragedy—that transfiguration or metamorphosis in the artist which enables one to affirm life despite its tragic character. Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Nietzsche’s literary-philosophical masterpiece, is introduced (in the preceding work The Gay Science) as a tragedy. As the work does not have the classical form of a tragedy, it seems what Nietzsche must have meant in referring to it as a tragedy is that in it the author sought to achieve what he had identified as the highest aim of tragedy. The main theme of Thus Spoke Zarathustra is Zarathustra’s teaching concerning the overhuman (Übermensch), a teaching which concerns the further evolution or transfiguration of humanity.

NIETZSCHE ON REALISM IN ART AND THE ROLE OF ILLUSIONS IN LIFE- AFFIRMATION by MARIE KERGUELEN LE BLEVENNEC Under the Direction of Jessica Berry, PhD ABSTRACT In this paper, I investigate Nietzsche’s views about realism in art, and use the resulting textual evidence to explain the connection between realism, health and life-affirmation. First, I show that Nietzsche’s contrasting claims about artists like Flaubert and Stendhal reflect a distinction between two types of realism: the unhealthy realism of Flaubert, and the healthy realism of Stendhal. I then use this understanding of healthy realism in art to argue that for Nietzsche, healthy realism is vital for life-affirmation. Finally, I apply this evidence to a debate between Daniel Came and Bernard Reginster concerning whether Nietzsche thinks life- affirmation requires falsifying reality using illusions, especially artistic illusions, for the purpose of masking life’s terrible truths.

Hegel, Schopenhauer, History and Grace in Parsifal Mark Berry Richard Wagner’s final drama, Parsifal, has generally been understood to represent the culmination of an ideological line very different from that of his earlier works, with the exception of Tristan und Isolde and possibly the later sections of Der Ring des Nibelungen. The revolutionary of the Dresden barricades in 1849 has finally sold out to the quietism of Schopenhauer and/or to Christianity – or, which amounts to the same thing, he has at last cast off the folly of his radical youthful flirtations. Thus Roger Scruton posits a ‘transformation of the Ring story, from Young Hegelian beginnings to a quasi-Christian or at any rate Schopenhauerian end’, in which ‘we witness a process of growing up in Wagner for which there is no equivalent in Marx’. Mention of Marx is far from inciden- tal, since Wagner is thereby achieving an emancipation from Hegel such as Marx never does. The Ring, Scruton startlingly claims, is therefore ‘not about power or money or even love; it is about original sin’.1 This nicely sets the scene for the less ambiguously Christian milieu and message of Parsifal.2 Nietzsche was more hostile: for what would a seriously intended Parsifal mean? Must one really see in it (as some- body has expressed it against me) ‘the abortion […] of a hatred of knowledge, spirit, and sensuality’? A curse upon senses and spirit in a single hatred and breath? An apos- tasy and reversion to sickly Christian and obscurantist ideals? And in the end even self-abnegation, self-striking-himself-out on the part of an artist who had previously striven with all of his will’s might to achieve the opposite, the highest spiritualisation and sensualisation in his art? […] One should remember how enthusiastically Wagner followed in the footsteps of the philosopher Feuerbach.

"Nietzsche contra Wagner" was written about the middle of December 1888; but, although it was printed and corrected before the New Year, it was not published until long afterwards owing to Nietzsche's complete breakdown in the first days of 1889. In reading these two essays we are apt to be deceived, by their virulent and forcible tone, into believing that the whole matter is a mere cover for hidden fire,-a mere blind of cesthetic discussion concealing a deep and implacable personal feud which demands and will have vengeance.
