The Un vers ty of W scons n System Feminist Periodicals A current listing of contents WOMEN'S STUDIES Volume 24, Number 2 Summer 2004 Published by Phyllis Holman Weisbard LIBRARIAN Women's Studies Librarian Feminist Periodicals A current listing of contents Volume 24, Number 2 (Summer 2004) Periodical literature is the culling edge ofwomen'sscholarship, feminist theory, and much ofwomen's culture. Feminist Periodicals: A Current Listing ofContents is pUblished by the Office of the University of Wisconsin System Women's Studies Librarian on a quarterly basis with the intent of increasing public awareness of feminist periodicals. It is our hope that Feminist Periodicals will serve several purposes: to keep the reader abreast of current topics in feminist literature; to increase readers' familiarity with a wide spectrum of feminist periodicals; and to provide the requisite bibliographic information should a reader wish to subscribe to ajournal or to obtain a particular article at her library or through interlibrary loan. (Users will need to be aware of the limitations of the new copyright law with regard to photocopying of copyrighted materials.) Table ofcontents pages from current issues ofmajor feministjournals are reproduced in each issue of Feminist Periodicals, preceded by a comprehensive annotated listing of all journals we have selected. As publication schedules vary enormously, not every periodical will have table of contents pages reproduced in each issue of FP. The annotated listing provides the following information on each journal: 1. Year of first pUblication. 2. Frequency of publication. 3. U.S. subscription price(s). 4. SUbscription address. 5. "Rip Her to Shreds": Women's Musk According to a Butch-Femme Aesthetic
"Rip Her to Shreds": Women's Musk According to a Butch-Femme Aesthetic Judith A, Peraino "Rip Her to Shreds" is the tide of a song recorded in 1977 by the rock group Blondie; a song in which the female singer cat tily criticizes another woman. It begins with the female "speak er" addressing other members of her clique by calling attention to a woman who obviously stands outside the group. The lis tener likewise becomes a member of the clique, forced to par ticipate tacitly in the act of criticism. Every stanza of merciless defamation is articulated by a group of voices who shout a cho rus of agreement, enticing the listener to join the fray. (spoken! Hey, psf pst, here she comes !lOW. Ah, you know her, would YOIl look ollhlll hair, Yah, YOIl know her, check out Ihose shoes, A version of this paper was read at the conference "Feminist Theory and Music: Toward a Common Language," Minneapolis, MN, June 1991. In contrast to the backstabbing female which the Blondie song presents, so-called "women's music" emphasizes solidarity and affection between women, and reserves its critical barbs for men and patriarchal society. -

FOR DISTRIBUTION, PRESS AND FESTIVAL INQUIRIES: [email protected] Promo photos available here NAUGHTY BOOKS A Documentary by Austen Eleanore Rachlis Sex sells…until it doesn’t Naughty Books is a feature-length documentary about the boom of self-published romance novels in the wake of Fifty Shades of Grey. It follows three authors who became millionaires in under a year using pen names to sell erotica online for $1.99. Along the way, they upended the book industry, challenged ideas of female sexuality, and re-imagined the American Dream for the 21st century. *** In 2011, British television producer E.L. James published the erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey. It became a cultural phenomenon, selling 100 million copies worldwide and taking erotica mainstream. Once a genre consumed in secret, explicit romances were now being read on the subway, by the pool, and on the treadmill. As it turned out, women weren’t only reading erotica in large numbers; they were also writing it. Thanks to Amazon’s Kindle store, which allowed writers to upload directly to the marketplace, women were able to publish independently, bypassing traditional gatekeepers like agents and editors. Readers were hungry for books like Fifty Shades, but the major publishers responded slowly. Self-published authors filled the void, flooding the market with $1.99 books about innocent women and bad-boy billionaires falling in love and having steamy sex. Readers devoured them. The authors became a force, challenging conventional feminist ideas and disrupting publishing. Naughty Books follows three writers who experienced overnight success, gaining tens of thousands of fans and securing lucrative deals with major publishers. -

Convenient Fictions
CONVENIENT FICTIONS: THE SCRIPT OF LESBIAN DESIRE IN THE POST-ELLEN ERA. A NEW ZEALAND PERSPECTIVE By Alison Julie Hopkins A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2009 Acknowledgements I would like to acknowledge those people who have supported me in my endeavour to complete this thesis. In particular, I would like to thank Dr Alison Laurie and Dr Lesley Hall, for their guidance and expertise, and Dr Tony Schirato for his insights, all of which were instrumental in the completion of my study. I would also like to express my gratitude to all of those people who participated in the research, in particular Mark Pope, facilitator of the ‘School’s Out’ programme, the staff at LAGANZ, and the staff at the photographic archive of The Alexander Turnbull Library. I would also like to acknowledge the support of The Chief Censor, Bill Hastings, and The Office of Film and Literature Classification, throughout this study. Finally, I would like to thank my most ardent supporters, Virginia, Darcy, and Mo. ii Abstract Little has been published about the ascending trajectory of lesbian characters in prime-time television texts. Rarer still are analyses of lesbian fictions on New Zealand television. This study offers a robust and critical interrogation of Sapphic expression found in the New Zealand television landscape. More specifically, this thesis analyses fictional lesbian representation found in New Zealand’s prime-time, free-to-air television environment. It argues that television’s script of lesbian desire is more about illusion than inclusion, and that lesbian representation is a misnomer, both qualitatively and quantitively. -

She made her debut in the film ABCD , playing a promiscuous young woman struggling with the ties of family and tradition. It garnered a lot of attention from press and audiences , both positive and negative. The Indian American beauty held her own against Albert Brooks in Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World, she fell in love with actress Lisa Ray in Shamim Sarif's beloved films The World Unseen and I Can't Think Straight. She also bested me during a pillow fight on my Logo show Brunch with Bridget. (I totally let her win!) Sheth is dealing with controversy once again with her latest film, Three Veils. The films follows RECENT COMMENTS three Middle Eastern women and who deal with abuse, rape and struggles with their sexuality. EXPLORING THE COMPOSITION AND FORMATION OF LESBIAN SOCIAL TIES by LAURA S. LOGAN B.A., University of Nebraska at Kearney, 2006 A THESIS submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF ARTS Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2008 Approved by: Major Professor Dana M. Britton Copyright LAURA S. LOGAN 2008 Abstract The literature on friendship and social networks finds that individuals form social ties with people who are like them; this is termed “homophily.” Several researchers demonstrate that social networks and social ties are homophilous with regard to race and class, for example. However, few studies have explored the relationship of homophily to the social ties of lesbians, and fewer still have explicitly examined sexual orientation as a point of homophily. This study intends to help fill that gap by looking at homophily among lesbian social ties, as well as how urban and non-urban residency might shape homophily and lesbian social ties. I gathered data that would answer the following central research questions: Are lesbian social ties homophilous and if so around what common characteristics? What are lesbians’ experiences with community resources and how does this influence their social ties? How does population influence lesbian social ties? Data for this research come from 544 responses to an internet survey that asked lesbians about their social ties, their interests and activities and those of their friends, and the cities or towns in which they resided. Using the concepts of status and value homophily, I attempt to make visible some of the factors and forces that shape social ties for lesbians. -
