Come and join the celebration and the trail dedication to be held on Saturday July 14th at 12:00 noon at the Old Airport in West Yellowstone, Montana. (GPS coordinates: 44.661, - 111.115.) After the dedication ceremony we will be riding along the Montana portion of the Great Western Trail to the Idaho border, approximately 9 miles. When recognized as a National Millennium Trail by the Department of Transportation and the White House Millennium Council, Former Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater stated that “Transportation is about more than concrete, asphalt, and steel, it’s about people. Millennium Trails will connect our nation’s land- scape, heritage and culture and symbolize America’s legacy for the new millennium.” The Great Western Trail provides a fantastic long distance recreation experience, promotes opportunities for economic growth, provides multi-use access to our public lands, and acquaints the user with the culture, history, and traditions of the West. The Great Western Trail is under study by Congress to become part of the National Trail System. The GWT is a 3,000+-mile corridor of already existing trails, routes and roads, mostly on public lands. Forest Service, Bu- reau of Land Management and other land management agencies have identified points where these routes natu- rally link together, forming a corridor of trails that runs from the Mexican border ultimately to the Canadian border. The trail is a predominately multi-use system, allowing both motorized and non-motorized recreation on both shared and separated paralleling routes. (see www.gwt.org). This dedication commemorates the completion of a new Montana segment that will link with the extensive sec- tions of the Great western Trail that already exist in the states of Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho. This dedication event presents an opportunity to celebrate the partnerships between the users and developers of the trail, the numerous land management agencies, and the surrounding communities. This grass roots effort will insure continued development and maintenance of the Great Western Trail. The Notice to Proceed was issued to Dick Anderson Construction on Thursday, July 5. Construction is anticipated to last through the end of October. Bids for a phase 2 construction contract are expected to be solicited in the fall of 2018. Dick Anderson Construction will begin by con- structing temporary platforms for crew sleeping facilities. This summer’s work will include new foundation work to stabilize and level the interior structure, with the ultimate goal of supporting a roof. After the foundation is constructed, the main work will include seismic stabilization through the construction of the interior walls, floors, and roof framing. The roof constructed in 2018 will be a temporary membrane to protect the structure through the 2018-2019 winter. Materials will be delivered via helicopter and mule train to support reconstruction activities. The Sperry Chalet Dining Room will begin operating to serve construction crews and visitors to the area. Lunch and a la carte services are available from 11 am – 5 pm. Breakfast and dinner will be available to the public via reservation with Belton Chalets, Inc. by calling (888) 345-2649. Earlier this summer, Glacier National Park trail crews, conservation corps, and the Flathead National Forest Hot Shots successfully cleared thousands of trees that had fallen on trails throughout the Sprague Fire burn area and improved trail tread. Though all trails within the Sprague Fire burn area are cleared, hikers along the Gunsight Trail to the chalet (commonly referred to as the Sperry Trail) will notice that very limited shade is available following the fire. Though the hike up to Sperry Chalet has never been recommended as an up and back one-day hike, the park is now advising hikers to be particularly careful if they attempt it due to extreme heat from the sun following the burn.
