At the request of Park County Montana, Western Federal Lands Highway Division (WFL) conducted a study of the Old Yellowstone Trail South (OYTS) road alignment for potential improvements to the corridor through the Federal Lands Access Program. This effort strives to identify feasible improvements within the study area based on needs identified by the public, the study partners, and resource agencies. It will serve as a pre-NEPA evaluation to identify reasonable options for the 21-mile corridor from Gardiner, MT to Highway 89 South at Point of Rocks and serve as a resource for future funding opportunities. This study is not intended to be a decision document and does not require allocation of any funds towards a specific project contained in the report. Future projects will be determined on a case-by-case basis. A major consideration for this corridor is the proximity to Yellowstone National Park and inclusion within Custer Gallatin National Forest. Maintenance, improvements and decisions regarding management of the corridor must be a collaborative effort and consider the resources and mission of each of the agencies involved. The Old Yellowstone Trail South Corridor Study is available for review on the website at http://www. parkcounty.org/Our-Projects/Yankee-Jim-Canyon-Old-Yellowstone-Trail-South-Planning- Project. Written comments are encouraged and may be submitted to the Park County Commission at commissioners@ parkcounty.org. Please submit comments by 4:00PM local time on March 2, 2020. The individual was cross-country skiing on the Grand Loop Road near the South Rim Drive when the incident occurred. Witnesses took the 43-year-old woman to the Canyon Visitor Education Center, where rangers provided initial treatment for puncture wounds and lacerations to her head and arm. Rangers transported her to Mammoth Hot Springs by over-snow vehicle, and then she continued on to a medical facility. Park staff temporarily closed the road, then positively identified and killed the coyote. The coyote is being necropsied and will be tested for rabies. “Encounters like these are rare, but they can happen. We suspect this coyote may have been starving due to having porcupine quills in its lower jaw and inside its mouth. Its young age likely led to its poor condition and irregular Lori Hamilton behavior,” said wildlife biologist Doug Smith. By Ryan Peerboom, Enterprise Staff Writer The Gardiner Speech, Drama and Debate team won the Class C State Championship on Saturday at the state meet in Bigfork. The win is a return to the top for Gardiner, which had won 12 consecutive state titles before finishing second last year due to a tiebreaker. Winning has become synonymous with the program. “It’s a little bit of a tradition,” head coach Christina Cote-Reinhart said. Cote-Reinhart has overseen 14 state championships in her 20 years as coach. The state meet is combined between Class B and Class C schools, where the schools with the highest totals for each classification are named state champions. The Speech and Debate team scored 46 points while the Drama team scored 41 points. Both were the highest total for Class C schools. Elisabeth Leafty and Veronika Macy were the only individual champions. The two finished first in the Humorous Duo competition. Other top finishers include: • Elijah Leafty, who finished in second place for his Mime act. • Alexis Sullivan, who finished fourth in Informative Speaking. • Anola Stacy, who finished fourth in Lincoln- Douglas Debate. • Keena Lewis, who finished sixth in Extemporaneous Debate. Cote-Reinhart, who coaches alongside Dorothy Dears and John Sacklin, said that everything is earned, despite the sustained success of the program. “Every year you have to start back (at the beginning),” she said. “It’s not like you get a boost one year to the next. We earn it every year.” Cote-Rienhart noted that while every team is different, this year the team included plenty of quality individuals.
