Dear SMOW Family, I want to tell you how much I appreciate your generous donation to Faith in Practice. These monies help continue medi- cal outreach in Guatemala. I have been so blessed to be able to serve in Guatemala directly. I am inspired by the Guatemalans sense of hope, faith in God, and trust in our care. It is an honor to feel such appreciation. Before each surgery, our team minister and a pre-op nurse pray with each patient. I often miss this beautiful ceremony because I am preparing for their anesthetic. I was fortunate enough to witness a patient praying. He was so sincere and enthu- siastic in his prayer. I had to giggle because he blessed us and prayed for safe travel for "the gringos." It is touching to see his concerns were for our safety while awaiting his own operation. Each day begins at 0600 with morning devotions. We then walk about three blocks to the hospital. Along the walk, my "buenos dias" are greeted with genuine, infectious smiles. No one is too distracted, rushed, or suspicious to give a warm greeting. I loved greeting the boy with his milk goats. A great start to each day. The clinic is run by a physician and a group of Franciscan , or hermanas. The hermanas also run an orphanage for 80 to 100 children. An un- planned part of our mission, is going outside when surgeries are finished to play with the children. I received so many hugs and smiles. We exchanged our language skills (or not) while blowing bubbles, drawing faces with side walk chalk and running foot races. The time I spent in Guatemala provided dual blessings not only to our patients and the orphans, but also to myself. I am so blessed to be able to participate and serve. Thank-you for your prayers and encouraging words and for finan- cially supporting our mission efforts. Sincerely, Elise Marren

ALMS COLLECTION NEXT WEEK FOR MISSION HONDURAS INTERNATIONAL’S LIBERIA MISSION INCOPORATED

Mission Honduras International is a Catholic Missionary Organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty for children and families through material and spiritual support and a Catholic education. Mission Honduras International currently oper- ates Liberia Mission Inc. in West Africa. Founded in 2003 just as the civil war was ending, Liberia Mission began with just six orphaned children. Today, it is a vibrant, life-saving community of love, learning, work and prayer, serving over 340 mis- sion children as well as the surrounding villages. At Liberia Mission, poor and orphaned children - survivors of Liberia’s long and brutal civil war - are learning to become future leaders in their families, communities, and country. Liberia Mission is home to 114 boys and girls, St. Michael the , and St. Anthony of Padua School (K-9), which edu- cates an additional 220 children from surrounding villages who would not otherwise have access to education, medical care, adequate food and shelter, and faith-formation.

Liberia Mission is considered by many to be the best mission of its kind in Liberia. At a February 24, 2010 ceremony at Libe- ria Mission, Monsignor Andrew Karnley from the Archdiocese of Monrovia said, “Liberia Mission Incorporated is the great- est thing to happen to Liberia since the end of the second civil war in 2003. There is simply no other way to state it. Its im- pact on the past, its impact now, and its impact in the future cannot be over stated... We are a blessed country because of this mission."

Liberia Mission is grateful to St. Mary of the Woods parishioners John and Sue Dewan who have offered their invaluable sup- port and service to build and sustain Liberia Mission. John and daughter Erica are currently in Liberia visiting & serving the children. Please join them in helping to keep this life-saving mission going strong and leading the way for a peaceful Liberia.

You can also watch a new video series online at www.liberiamission.com/video.html to learn about the incredible story of Liberia Mission, its children, and how donors like you are truly saving lives.

Our help is needed for this important ministry. Please be generous. Thank you!

PLEASE REMEMBER ST. MARY OF THE WOODS WHEN MAKING OUT YOUR WILL.

The Breaking of the Bread

This is not a minor part of the mass, but how the early Christians actually referred to their eucharistic cele- bration. The phrase recalls the last chapter of the of Luke, where the disciples on the road to Emmaus recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread.

Why real food?

The nature of the way Christ is present to us in the Eucharist demonstrates Christ’s intimate relationship with us as he comes to nourish us. Christ comes un- der the form of bread because bread is an ordinary staple food which we use for nourishment. It is not an exotic food for the rich, but a basic food which is available to all.
