Bernini began sculpting it in 1622 after he finished The Rape of Proserpina. He stopped working on it from 1623 to 1624 to sculpt David, before completing it in 1625. With notable technical accuracy, the natural agility of this work shows the astonishing moment when the nymph turns into a laurel tree. The artist uses his exceptional technical skill to turn the marble into roots, leaves and windswept hair. Psychological research, combined with typically Baroque expressiveness, renders the emotion of Daphnes terror, caught by the god in her desperate journey, still ignorant of her ongoing transformation. Apollo, thinking he has achieved his objective, is caught in the moment he becomes aware of the metamorphosis, before he is able to react, watching astonished as his victim turns into a laurel tree. For Apollos head, Bernini looked to Apollo Belvedere, which was in the Vatican at the time. The base includes two scrolls, the first containing the lines of the distich by Maffeo Barberini, a friend of Cardinal Scipione Borghese and future Pope Urban VIII. It explores the theme of vanitas in beauty and pleasure, rendered as a Christian moralisation of a profane theme. The second scroll was added in the mid-1700s. -

UF “ROME PROJECT” LESSON 1 Reading and comprehension COLOSSEUM The Colosseum, or the Coliseum, originally the Flavian Amphitheatre (Anfiteatro Flavio or Colosseo), is an amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome. It’s the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire. It is elliptical in plan and it’s 188 metres long. Inside the Colosseum there were about 50,000 seats for the spectators. The height of the outer wall is 48 meters. The Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions and dramas based on Classical mythology. The Colosseum is one of the symbols of Imperial Rome. ST. PETER’S BASILICA The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter is commonly known as Saint Peter's Basilica and it is a Late Renaissance church located within the Vatican City. In Roman Catholic tradition, the basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. The basilica is within a forecourt in two sections, both surrounded by tall colonnades. The basilica is cruciform in shape, with an elongated nave in the Latin cross form. The basilica contains a large number of tombs of popes considered outstanding artworks. There are also a number of sculptures in niches and chapels, including Michelangelo’s “Pieta”. The central feature is a baldachin over the Papal Altar designed by Lorenzo Bernini. For this purpose, thirteen Annunciations of this period which include that piece of furniture are analyzed, and in passing some inadequate interpretations that have been given about any of these pictorial images are evidenced. To justify our interpretations, we rely on an abundant corpus of texts through which many Fathers and theologians of the Latin Church consider the thalamus concept as an eloquent metaphor for the incarnation of the Son of God as a man in the Virgin Mary’s womb, as well as for her virginal divine maternity. The increasingly complex and detailed images of the Annunciation of the 14th and 15th centuries include almost always some narrative details –such as a stem of lilies,1 a book of prayers, a house in the form of a temple,2 the divine ray of light descending, with the dove of the Holy Spirit, towards the Mary‘s ear,3 or the submissive and demure attitude of the Virgin Mary4—, whose respective symbolism has been highlighted, with greater or lesser success, by numerous experts. -

Roberts (1885) Introductory commentary by a Catholic layman in 2002 1543 Nicolaus Copernicus published De Revolutionibus Orbium Cœlestium (On the Revolutions of Spheres). 1534-1549 Reign of Pope Paul III, who was quite aware of Fr. Copernicus’ work. The two were actually friends. 1605-1621 Reign of Pope Paul V, who issued a 1616 decree condemning pro-heliocentricity work of Galileo Galilei. 1623-1644 Reign of Pope Urban VIII, who issued a 2nd decree [1633] condemning Copernicanism. 1655-1657 Reign of Pope Alexander VII, who issued a Bull [1664] reinforcing that Copernicanism was heretical. 1740-1758 Reign of Pope Benedict XIV, who removed the Copernican books from the Index in 1740. 1846-1878 Reign of Pope Pius IX, who called Vatican Council [1869-70] wherein Papal Infallibility was defined. In 1870 the Vatican Council promulgated the dogma of Papal Infallibility. Until then, the infallibility of the Catholic Church’s teachings had never been defined explicitly although accepted by the Fathers throughout its history. This definition brought criticism from those outside the Church and even from some within. There were at least three reasons for this: (1) It decreed that God Himself dictated the teachings of the Catholic Church, a notion that other religions were prone to deny; (2) some did not want to elevate the papacy to an infallible level, even when declaring matters of faith and morals; (3) some believed the Church had erred on previous occasions and that therefore the definition was erroneous. -

The head of the Church is called papa--that is, father--in Latin because he is believed to be the spiritual parent of all the faithful. The Pope is entrusted with absolute authority over all aspects of the Catholic Church, including temporal as well as spiritual matters. White smoke will billow out into Saint Peter's Square signaling that the Holy Mother Church has discovered fire. I'm kidding. The Catholic Church has long since acknowledged the existence of fire and has used it on more than a few occasions. If you don't believe me, ask a heretic. If you can find one! (Did I mention John Paul II once issued a formal apology to Prometheus? True story...) In any case, we Big News Catholics don't want the rest of you sinners to spend the next week in complete ignorance of our glorious heritage and the intricate, infallible goings- on of our higher-ups. With that in mind we now present a brief history of the papacy, or, as we call it: "The Vatican Highlight Reel!" MATT There have been 265 Popes since Jesus chose Saint Peter to be the rock on which he founded his church in 32 A.D. SAINT PETER Numero Uno, baby! Pearly gates in the house! Published on The Embryo Project Encyclopedia (https://embryo.asu.edu) Pope Innocent XI (1611-1689) [1] By: Brind'Amour, Katherine Garcia, Benjamin Keywords: Catholicism [2] Popes [3] Abortion [4] Fetus [5] Pope Innocent XI [6], born Benedetto Odescalchi, made considerable contributions to the Roman Catholic approach to embryology [7] by condemning several propositions on liberal moral theology in 1679, including two related to abortion [8] and ensoulment [9]. His rejection of these principles strengthened the Church’s stance against abortion [8] and for the idea of “hominization,” meaning the presence of human qualities before birth. He was born 19 May in 1611 in Como, Italy, and began his studies under the Jesuits at Como before studying jurisprudence at both Naples and Rome. Pope Urban VIII named him prothonotary, president of the Apostolic Camera, commissary at Ancona, administrator of Macerata, and governor of Picena in succession. Shortly thereafter he was appointed cardinal-deacon of Santi Cosma e Damiano in 1645 before being named cardinal-priest of Sant’ Onofrio by Pope Innocent X. During his time as cardinal, Odescalchi was beloved by his people for his love, charity, and devotion to his position. He spent the majority of his time and effort trying to preserve the purity of faith and the morals that governed this purity. This effort to maintain traditionalism and wholesomeness resulted in regulating the dress of Roman women, suppressing the gambling houses, and encouraging receiving daily Communion. Odescalchi was actually introduced to the famine-stricken people of Ferrara as “Mittimus patrem pauperum,” meaning “father of the poor” because of his characteristic attention to their needs. -
