(www.michelin.es). • Media Information, 2013 Dakar Rally
Media Information 2013 Dakar Rally – #07 The Atacama shows no mercy: Three-O-One defends third place at the “Dakar” Calama, 10 January 2013 Position defended on one of the most formidable stages: Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz remain in third place after almost 3,000 of the 8,000 kilometres that form this year’s Dakar Rally. Driving a Toyota Hilux, they trailed stage winners Nasser Al-Attiyah and Lucas Cruz in a buggy by 17m 17s after one of the most challenging legs of the toughest desert rally in the world, which took the competitors through the Atacama Desert. The winners of the 2009 “Dakar” were struck by misfortune in the dunes: de Villiers and von Zitzewitz had no option but to slow down when they came across a rival car that had, unbeknown to them, got stuck behind a crest. They were then forced to spend valuable time using sand ladders, deflating the tyres and shovelling for all their worth in order to free themselves from the situation they suddenly found themselves in. Despite being seen as rank outsiders, “Ginny” and “Schnietz”, as the two friends know each other, now find themselves just 42m 31s behind odds-on favourites Stéphane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret in the X- raid Mini in the overall classification. This in itself is a success worthy of recognition after a third of the total “Dakar” distance. Friday sees the Dakar Rally cross the border to Argentina via the picturesque Paso de Jama, with its literally breath-taking plateaus at over 4,000 metres above sea level.

Media Information BENEATH THE GENTLE VENEER LIES A WEALTH OF WISDOM A wealth of motorsport knowledge and experience underlies the blithesome Juan Möhr, who’s Cross Country accomplishments over the past 24-years include the South African regional and national championships, the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup and the character-building Dakar Rally. The cheerful Möhr started racing in regional events with his uncle Max Möhr in 1996 and has participated in 85 SA Cross Country (SACCS) events since 2002, placing him amongst the most experienced navigators in the current SACCS series. “Uncle Max was a motorsport devotee and highly respected by his peers, a truly big hearted man but also a hard task master. One of the first lessons I was taught before I could even start racing was, if you want to play the game - know the rules. Something I have never forgotten,” Juan said. Juan’s formative years included, building from scratch, a Class B Special Vehicle which Max and he won the 1996 Barberspan 400 regional race in, on his 19th birthday and in their first outing. The following year the pair won the Transvaal Regional Championship and placed second in the popular Total Super Series short circuit challenge. In 1997 Möhr was employed by the charismatic Richard Schilling, a multiple Cross Country champion, former president of Motorsport South Africa and the FIA Cross Country Commission and a current board member of both organisations, to build and prepare his race winning vehicles. 1999 saw Möhr step up to a Class A Raceco, which he also prepared, with longstanding friend Mark Corbett with their best outing for the year being a third place in the Lesotho Roof of Africa.

  • Nissan Belgium Dans La Course

  • UK Rally Mechanic Legend, Geoff Jones, Confirms the Importance of Brand Quality and a Reputation for Reliability
UK rally mechanic legend, Geoff Jones, confirms the importance of brand quality and a reputation for reliability Geoff Jones, owner and operator of one of the UK's most trusted rally preparation garages, has spoken out about the importance of quality in manufacture and design for car components. In his work he sees how easily many road spec components can fail under duress which he believes exposes the 'that will do' attitude that may exist in some corners of the industry. He believes that once you find a brand that invests in R&D and product testing it is important to stick with it as there is no room for failures when you're racing. Geoff Jones has had a love for rallying since he can remember; growing up around the forest stages of the Mid-Wales Rally, as a boy he has fond memories of hearing the cars howling through the trees. Throughout his school days he spent his spare time helping out in garages and learning how to fix and prepare cars for rallying. As soon as he was old enough he got his race license and began his rally career in 1983, driving a Ford Escort MkII in the Welsh National Championship. As a driver he has enjoyed a lot of success and still regularly drives in local rallies. He has competed in rallies all over the world, worked as a test-driver for Pro-Drive and even driven in the Nissan and Proton Works teams. However, where his CV really begins to impress is in his technical support and development roles.
