    CLASSICAL INDIA "To FIGHT IN A RIGHTEOUS 19 WAR"· VARNA AND MORAL DUTY IN INDIA The system of social classes in India known as the caste system gradually took shape dur­ ing the thousand years prior to the beginning of the Common Era. The Aryans, an Indo­ European speaking people who may have come from the grasslands north of the Caspian Sea, took the lead in creating a four-part division of social classes-in which lineal descent was significant-called varnas (a Sanskrit word meaning "color"). The new social system was strongly hierarchical. Priests (brahmans) ranked the highest and warriors (kshatriyasl came next. Merchants, artisans, and peasants (vaishyas) ranked third. The fourth varna was composed of the servants (suclras) of th e three higher groups. A fifth category, made up of all those who were engaged in occupations defined as "unclean," stood outside the system of varnas; these people were known as "untouchables." (When the Portuguese arrived in India around 1500 c.E., they translated varna as "caste"; the "caste sys­ tem" is thus a later Europea n term used to describe Indian socia l rea lities.) The brahmans taught that each varna had its own sacred or moral duty (dharma) to perform. The example we consider in this chapter is that of the warr'iors, whose sacred duty was to fight. A vivid illustration of th e dharma of the warriors can be found in the famous literary text frOIll early India: the Bhagavad Gila (Song of God). The Bhagavad Gila is a portion of a much longer Indian classic, the Mahabharala, the epic tale of a war between two branches of the same family in the distant past.

[email protected] Abstract. Javanese names have undergone numerous developments throughout the course of human civilisation. The study of names is an important means of discovering the desires, cultural tastes and lifestyles of the Javanese from one period to another. This study used a qualitative descriptive research method. The data for the research were obtained from Indonesian historical sources, the story of Babad Tanah Jawa, epigraphs and selected informants. The techniques used to collect the data were content analysis and interviews with a number of historical and language experts. The analysis resulted in a description of the development of the form and structure of Javanese names. Based on the historical context, these names were strongly influenced by the Sanskrit language of the centuries- old Hindu and Buddhist traditions in India. The influence of the ancient Javanese language on Javanese names began to appear at the beginning of the Javanese Hindu era, along with a decline in the Hindu-Buddhist influence in Java. This influence was marked by the appearance of elements in names that do not exist as syllables in Sanskrit. This phenomenon indicates an acculturation of the Javanese, Hindu and Buddhist cultures. Ancient Javanese influences are still found today in modern Javanese names, such as in the use of the names Dyah, Jaya, Dewi/Devi, Wardhana, Arya and Rangga. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva. In material life, any who wants to accomplish material ambitions, should not only desire for it but also need to qualify himself for achieving that. So usually it is said if one wants to attain anything, then three steps are involved - namely desire, deserve and accomplish. Just desiring alone will not lead us anywhere. So we desire many things in material life, but do not get them because we do not have the qualification to get it either in terms of effort or good pious karma (good luck) to achieve them. For example, one may desire to buy a rich house or to go abroad. But unless one possess the material qualification needed for this, one will not achieve it. In some cases, even if one puts the efforts and one is qualified, still he may not achieve a few things if it is not in one's destiny. But when it comes to spiritual life, success does not depend on material qualification or one's good karma, since devotional service is beyond karma and modes. It depends on our sincere desire and Lord's mercy to attain success. In spiritual life, desiring itself means deserving. There is a nice incident in Mahabharata explaining this fact. Lord Krishna came as a messenger to Kauravas on behalf of the Pandavas on a peace mission. He wanted to advice Kauravas to return the Pandavas their rightful kingdom after the completion of their 13 years exile.
