  • “Outlaw Pete”: Bruce Springsteen and the Dream-Work of Cosmic American Music
“Outlaw Pete”: Bruce Springsteen and the Dream-Work of Cosmic American Music Peter J. Fields Midwestern State University Abstract During the 2006 Seeger Sessions tour, Springsteen shared his deep identification with the internal struggle implied by old spirituals like “Jacob’s Ladder.” While the Magic album seemed to veer wide of the Seeger Sessions ethos, Working on a Dream re-engages mythically with what Greil Marcus would call “old, weird America” and Gram Parsons deemed “cosmic American music.” Working suggests the universe operates according to “cosmic” principles of justice, judgment, and salvation, but is best understood from the standpoint of what Freud would call “dream work” and “dream thoughts.” As unfolded in Frank Caruso’s illustrations for the picturebook alter ego of Working‘s “Outlaw Pete,” these dynamics may allude to Springsteen’s conflicted relationship with his father. The occasion of the publication in December 2014 of a picturebook version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Outlaw Pete,” the first and longest song on the album Working on a Dream (2009), offers Springsteen scholars and fans alike a good reason to revisit material that, as biographer Peter Ames Carlin remarks, failed in the spring American tour of that year to “light up the arenas.”1 When the Working on a Dream tour opened in April 2009 in San Jose, at least Copyright © Peter Fields, 2016. I want to express my deep gratitude to Irwin Streight who read the 50 page version of this essay over a year ago. He has seen every new draft and provided close readings and valuable feedback. I also want to thank Roxanne Harde and Jonathan Cohen for their steady patience with this project, as well as two reviewers for their comments.

  • Povzdech a Nádech

  • A Watch Fit for a Rock Star
A watch fit for a Rock Star I am currently off work with a broken shoulder having crashed my mountain bike into a tree at speed! While away from the office I have being trying hard to occupy myself. I have learned to type pretty quickly with my left hand and have written this investigation, that I hope provides a good hit at a question I have seen asked and discussed loosely a few times over the years. What is the Seiko Diver worn by Brian May of Queen in the 1986 Magic Tour and often seen on his wrist since then? This all started when I sat down and watched the Wembley gig a few weeks ago. It was performed in 1986 as part of the ‘A Kind of Magic Tour’ I could clearly see that Brian was wearing a Seiko diver on a rubber strap. After watching this gig, I watched a few others I have and found that in earlier shows he either has no watch on, or something that is clearly not a Seiko. The next move was to search the forums to see if the question had been asked before, which it had been. Various answers were given; 6309 like Mick Jagger’s, SKX007, 7548 and a few others to mention besides, but all that I read were guesses and assumptions. So, with no definitive research to confirm the exact model, I set out trying to establish the evidence. The first job was to search for good close up photographs, of which there are very few; they are normally of Brian or his guitar, not his watch – Well guitar is his forte! The first good one I found helped massively, it is a black and white shot taken sometime in the 90’s/00’s I think.

  • A Magic Rook's Tour
    1 A Magic Rook’s Tour Stanley Rabinowitz Alliant Computer Systems Corp. 42 Nagog Park Acton, MA, 01720 A tour of a chessboard by a given chess piece is a sequence of moves by that piece such that each square of the chessboard is occupied once and only once during the journey. The tour is said to be reentrant if the chess piece can move from the last square of the tour directly back to the first square of the tour. Tours are possible by the King, Queen, Rook, and Knight, but not by a Bishop. When the occupied squares are successively numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, ..., the tour is known as a magic tour if the resulting numbered array is a magic square. The tour is a semi- magic tour if the result is only a semi-magic square (rows and columns add up to the magic constant, but the two diagonals do not both add up to the magic constant.) On the standard 8 × 8chessboard, a reentrant magic king’s tour is known [1]. This is also a reentrant magic queen’s tour. No fully magic knight’s tour is known, but there is a lot of literature on semi-magic knight tours [1-5]. We now round out our knowledge of magic tours by presenting a reentrant magic rook’s tour (Figure 1), believed to be new. For the reader’s convenience, we reproduce the reentrant magic king’s tour in Figure 2, and a reentrant semi-magic knight’s tour in Figure 3. 61 62 63 64 1 2 3 4 12 11 10 9 56 55 45 53 20 19 18 48 17 47 46 45 60 59 58 8 57 7 6 5 37 38 39 25 40 26 27 28 13 14 15 49 16 50 51 52 21 22 23 24 41 42 43 44 36 35 34 33 32 31 30 29 Figure 1: Magic Rook’s Tour Reprinted from the Journal of Recreational Mathematics, 18(1985–86)203–204 2 61 62 63 64 1 2 3 4 60 11 58 57 8 7 54 5 12 59 10 9 56 55 6 53 13 14 15 16 49 50 51 52 20 19 18 17 48 47 46 45 21 38 23 24 41 42 27 44 37 22 39 40 25 26 43 28 36 35 34 33 32 31 30 29 Figure 2: Magic King’s Tour 46 55 44 19 58 9 22 7 43 18 47 56 21 6 59 10 54 45 20 41 12 57 8 23 17 42 53 48 5 24 11 60 52 3 32 13 40 61 34 25 31 16 49 4 33 28 37 62 2 51 14 29 64 39 26 35 15 30 1 50 27 36 63 38 Figure 3: Semi-Magic Knight’s Tour References [1] W.

A.Q.F.C.V. Das Highlight war eine lange Version von „Spread Your Wings“, welche Freddie mit „You call it Wien – we call it Vienna!” ankündigte. Hot Space in Vienna 4 Jahre später spielten Queen wieder in Wien.

QUEEN The Official International Queen Fan Club | Summer 2015 Well, the years roll by, folks. Roger and I, along with Adam and the whole Queen Team, are starting to prepare mentally for our swing through South America next month. Amazing that we should be still thundering around the world crashing through herds of Queen songs with that phenomenal GFG Adam Lambert. Well, yes, it’s hard to talk sense these days. In my view, the world has gone mad. or someone’s Compassion is a lost concept, all decisions are made on the basis of how they affect ‘The Economy’ personal wealth and power, and selfishness—the F—k You philosophy—rules. So here I am, ranting on as I do. But I’m a musician, right? Yes, we’ll be seeing you out there in Sao Paulo and Rio and Buenos Aires and Santiago and Cordoba and Porto Alegre … how thrilling. It’s almost exactly 30 years since we headlined the very first Rock in Rio night—with Freddie, and John, of course, and now we return to a new young audience of rockers, with Adam, who I’m convinced they will adore. It was all sold out From the ‘One Voice’ video—see https://youtu.be/0plWNDyA6Ig months ago, so it ought to be wild. Behind the scenes, Queen activity is always in full swing. The chaps have been working on a new Hi Everyone! historical venture Queen at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1975. This concert was very special because it was the first time we ever played a whole show completely live onTV … the Christmas Show.
