A Study Guide of the Taiwanese Composer, Nan-Chang Chien, and his Four Aboriginal Lieder for Soprano and Orchestra. Graduate Program in School of Music The Ohio State University 2014 Document Committee: Robin Rice, Advisor Scott McCoy Alan Green Joseph Duchi Copyright by Szu- Yu Chu 2014 ABSTRACT Beginning in the middle of the twentieth century, Taiwanese musicians began to preserve the musical culture of the Taiwanese aboriginal tribes. A few composers started to arrange music based on aboriginal music and more and more pieces have been composed throughout the years; Nan-Chang Chien is one of the pioneer composers. Although Taiwanese musicians have begun composing and performing these works, few studies have been done which has left this music still mostly unknown to the world. This document aims to contribute to the study of Taiwanese composers by offering an introductory study guide for the Taiwanese composer, Nan-Chang Chien, and for his unpublished work, Four Aboriginal Lieder for Soprano and Orchestra. This study begins with a discussion of Taiwanese music history. It includes a brief investigation of the colonial history in Taiwan beginning in the seventeenth century and colonialism’s effect on the musical culture. Furthermore, it seeks to describe some of the different characteristics and influences in Taiwanese music that have been influenced by ii Taiwanese aboriginal music, traditional Chinese music, and western music. The document then continues with a brief study of the life and work of Nan-Chang Chien. -

MINA TASKOVI] Kineska narodna muzika je u toku svog razvoja po- darila veliki broj razli~itih muzi~kih oblika, razno- vrsnih dela i mnogo izvanrednih izvo|a~a. Jo{ za vre- mena dinastije ^ou, kada je i postavljen sistem ri- tualne muzike, dvorski ~inovnici i knji`evnici koji su u~estvovali u kreiranju tog sistem bili su u obavezi da ovladaju tehnikom sviranja na jednom ili na dva mu- zi~ka instrumenta. Ova tradicija trajala je oko 3000 godina. Dvorski ~inovnici, u~eni ljudi, ~ak i carevi, imali su u~e{}a u kreiranju muzike. Muzika se zapisi- vala, tako da je do danas sa~uvano oko 3000 muzi~kih dela sa oko 150 razli~itih interpretacija, pisanih za in- strument gu}in (guqin).Ve}ina klasi~nih muzi~kih de- la, uklju~uju}i i ona pisana za lautu i druge `i~ane instrumente, datira jos od kraja dinastije Ming po~et- ka dinastije ]ing. Klasi~na kineska muzika se ~esto posmatra u okviru dva pravca: ansambl i solo muzike. Forme i kompozicije ansambl muzike Kineska klasi~na ansambl muzika ima razli~ite izvore porekla, muzi~ke oblike, izvo|enja i na~ine preno- {nja. Uop{teno govore}i, geografsko poreklo je njena karakteristika raspoznavanja. Muzika duva~kih i uda- ra~kih instrumenata karakteristi~na je za severni deo Kine i obuhvata muziku duva~kih i udara~kih instru- menata Siana, “badato” muziku provincije Liaoning i shipan muziku grada Luojanga. The Chinese immigrants, who came from different places of origin, also brought their culture into Hong Kong. Today, we can still observe the persistence of these imported cultures. One of these observable cultures is the Chaozhou culture. Since May of 1999, the author has carried out continuous investigation on the musical activities of the Music Division of Hong Kong Chiu Chow Merchants Mutual Assistance Society, Ltd. in Hong Kong. -

The Buddha’s Voice: Ritual Sound And Sensory Experience In Medieval Chinese Religious Practice Abstract This dissertation explores Buddhist chanting practices in mainly the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE), showing that they were more than just one part of ritual practice: chanting could also be a type of music, an educational tool, a means for manipulating the supernatural, and a cure and cause of illness. Previous studies of chanting practices in Chinese Buddhism have addressed histories of transmission, doctrinal approaches, and made efforts to preserve melodies through notation. However, they do not necessarily capture how individuals who engaged in chanting experienced this practice. Therefore this dissertation aims to investigate this experience through accounts found in hagiography, miracle tales, and other Buddhist materials. In studying chanting from this perspective, we can see how local and individual experiences, goals, and needs interacted with practices, and how these practices operated within Chinese Buddhist communities. Furthermore, we can understand how and when these understandings and practices were informed by scripture, and when they were not, through how individuals performed, listened to, and promoted them. -
