[email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT The reconstruction of total marine fisheries catches for the islands of Madeira for 1950-2010 added estimates of unreported subsistence and recreational catches, as well as discards to the reported commercial fisheries landings obtained from official statistics. While there are suggestions that commercial fisheries (e.g. black-scabbard fish fishery) also produce unreported catches, we were not able to estimate these at this point. Total estimated fisheries catches taken by Madeira from the Madeiran EEZ were around 460,000 tonnes for the 1950-2010 period, increasing from around 2,300 t in 1950 to a peak of 15,000 t in 1995, before declining to around 5,400 t by 2010. -

25. D ESCRIPTIVE C ATALOGUE : F AMILY AESHNIDAE Anax ephippiger Photo: Pablo Martínez-Darve Sanz Length: From 61 to 70 mm. Hindwing spam: From 43 to 48 mm. Male: 1. Two black bold lines on the frons. 2. The upper part of the eyes is brown and the lower green. 3. Brown thorax. 4. Only the upper part of the S2 is blue, and this colour spreads up to the middle of the sides. 5. Abdomen is light brown or yellowish with a black stripe that stretches across it. 6. Long pointed anal appendages. 7. There is a yellow spot on the hindwing. Female: They are similar to males in patterns, but S2 is normally duller and the blue colour on S2 is not as bright or it does not exist. There is a black stripe that goes across the abdomen. HABITAT It can be found in all kinds of habitats, whether they are bodies of water or not, as this is a migratory species. It is unknown if there is a breeding spot this species has in the Province of Málaga, but they are likely to mate in standing water bodies with plenty of vegetation on the riverbank (above all rushes and bulrushes). These can be perennial or temporary, such as small reservoirs and dams, artificial ponds, deserted quarries and polls in rivers and streams. WAY OF LIFE This species migrates from Africa and the Mediterranean to a large part of Europe, where it reaches Iceland (only this Odonata from that country has been seen here). -

Odonatologica 44: 447-678 By naming 60 new dragonflies at once, we want to show that a biologist’s greatest importance today is to provide the names and knowledge needed to add all life to the human conscience. We do so by challenging three common misconceptions about biodiversity: 1. that most of Earth’s species are known to us 2. that the remaining unknown species are hidden and detectable only by genetics 3. that enough effort is being made in the field to uncover the unknown in time We demonstrate this with some of the most sensitive and beautiful of all biodiversity: 1. freshwater — Earth’s most dense and threatened species richness 2. Africa — the continent that will change most in the 21st century 3. dragonflies — the insects that could The new Sarep Sprite Pseudagrion sarepi was named be the best gauge of global change after the SAREP expedition to eastern Angola. Mankind knows just 20% of the 9 million species of animal, plant, fungus and protist thought to inhabit our planet. With 6000 species named, dragonflies and damselflies were regarded as well-known. The 60 new dragonflies described now are the most to be named at once in a century, adding 1 species to every 12 known in Africa. Their beauty and sensitivity can raise awareness for freshwater biodiversity, the densest and most threatened on earth. -

British Dragonfly Society Sussex Group Newsletter Winter! 2019 No 43 Expect the Unexpected By John Arnott Chichester Natural History Society members have been monitoring dragonflies at RSPB Medmerry since summer 2014, soon after it was flooded in autumn 2013. As many people know, this newly created wetland complex was designed primarily as a coastal flood mitigation system but with many natural habitat features built in. On the western edge is a complex of runoff channels with many bends and interconnected pools, all providing ideal habitat for dragonflies. Six years on and the channel system has become filled with a lush growth of aquatic plants domi- nated by tall emergents such as Branched Bur-reed Sparganium erectum, Reed Sweet-grass Glyceria maxima and Water-plantain Alisma plantago-aquatica together with submerged aquatics, in particu- lar, dense mats of Spiked Water-milfoil Myriophyllum spicatum. The management priority here is for Water Vole Arvicola amphibius so good aquatic plant growth is encouraged. too I’ve always thought that Med- merry would be in the front line for migrant species of dragonfly from the Continent. We rec- orded our first sightings of Small Red-eyed Damselfly Eryth- romma viridulum on 1st August 2014 but since then it has been quiet as far as migrant dragon- flies are concerned. I’ve always been a keen follower of Adrian Parr’s Migrant Dragonflies Facebook page and before every survey I spend time going through his books to remind myself what migrants to look out for. On 5th July this year we arrived at the RSPB Medmerry car park at Earnley in good time to meet other members of Chichester NHS and have lunch before our first dragonfly survey of the season. -

Portuguese history storyboard Cláudia Martins [email protected] Instituto Politécnico de Bragança Escola Superior de Educação Abstract This paper intends to present relevant facts about the Portuguese culture and history, so as to enable a better understanding of who the Portuguese are and provide an overall perspective of the course of history in this westernmost part of Europe. Although the choice of historical facts was subjective by nature, it is believed it achieves the aim of presenting information in a critical but blithesome way, with a view to also deconstructing national stereotypes, such as that Portuguese people are always late or are crazy about football. Finally, it focuses on some information about the Portuguese language mainly to serve as a term of comparison with other European languages. Introduction This paper starts with providing a brief introduction to Portugal, by focusing on general information about aspects such as our governmental system and suffrage, national languages, territory and climate, literacy and education, and national 146 Elisabete Silva, Clarisse Pais, Luís S. Then five historical events of the utmost importance for the history of Portugal will be referred to, namely the independence of the kingdom in the 12th century, the two main struggles to regain independence towards Spain due to the succession crises (in the 14th century and then in the 17th century), the liberal revolution of the 19th century, the birth of the Republic at the beginning of the 20th century and the right-wing dictatorship which was overthrown by the Carnation Revolution of 1974.
