This makes the study of associates vital to understanding the communities of their hosts. Mites associated with bees have a range of lifestyles on their hosts, acting as anything from parasitic disease vectors to harmless scavengers to mutualistic hive cleaners. For instance, in Apis mellifera (the European honey bee) the parasitic mite Varroa destructor has had a dramatic impact as one of the causes of colony-collapse disorder. However, little is known about mites associated with bees outside the genus Apis or about factors influencing the makeup of bee- associated mite communities. In this thesis, I explore the mite community of bees of the genus Bombus and how it is shaped by extrinsic and intrinsic aspects of the bees' environment at the individual bee, bee species, and bee community levels. Bombus were collected from 15 sites in the Ottawa area along a land-use gradient and examined for mites. -

E-mail: [email protected] Website: www.jenskjeld.info Abstract This is the first report of the bumblebee mite Parasitellus fucorum (De Geer, 1778) from the Faroe Islands. The mite was found on two bumblebee queens of the species Bombus lucorum (Linnaeus, 1761), one of which was heavily infested, hosting 811 mites. Several mites were additionally infected by heteromorphic deutonymphs (hypopi) of an Acaridae mite (Astigmata). Breeding bumblebees have inhabited the Faroe Islands since 2010. Parasitellus fucorum is common on bumblebees in all neighboring countries, recently including Iceland. We expect the appearance of further Parasitellus species on the Faroe Islands in the future. Parasitellus fucorum er almindelig på humlebier i alle vores nabolande og for nylig også fundet på Island. Vi forventer, at der i fremtiden vil blive fundet andre arter af Parasitellus på Færøerne. -

Northern bumblebees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) with annual lifecycles depend both on energy stores remaining in their fat body after diapause and a few spring flowering plants. Most temperate bumblebees emerge gradually over several months after winter depending on the species and within species on the location of the overwintering chamber (hibernaculum). Weather can either delay or promote emergence and nectar resources are needed to fuel flight at low ambient temperatures to find a nest site. Several phoretic mites use queens for transportation and have synchronized life cycles with their host species. Their presence on the body of bumblebees is usually harmless but can become harmful when the number of mites increases to hundreds per individual bee. High numbers of mites on queens may also indicate the queens are in poor condition. Well-known negative effects of worldwide economic importance are caused by mites parasitizing honeybee colonies. Lately, attention has focused on the endoparasitic mite Locustacarus buchneri that has been found in commercial bumblebees. However, little is known of other mites associated with commercial bumblebee nests. Transportation of commercial bumblebee colonies with unwanted residents may introduce foreign mite species to new localities. In this study, we assessed the prevalence and species composition of mites associated with commercial bumblebee nests and determined if the mites are foreign species for Poland and for Europe. The study was conducted on 37 commercial bumblebee nests from two companies (Dutch and Israeli), originating from two greenhouses in southern Poland, and on 20 commercial bumblebee colonies obtained directly from suppliers. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Andropolymorphism, defined as discontinuous morphological variability in males, can lead to taxonomic confusion when different male morphs are determined and described as separate species. This study addresses this issue in two occasion- ally sympatric mite species Aclerogamasus similis (Willmann, 1953) and A. holzmannae (Micherdziński, 1969) collected in Poland. The females of these two taxa are morphologically indistinguishable but males are quite different, and could be either separate species or one species with two male morphs. We address this question by performing molecular assays, testing variation in a fragment of the mtDNA COI gene and the D2 region of 28S rDNA. Molecular analysis of populations revealed very low variation in the studied gene fragments. All sequences of the D2 region of 28S rDNA (size 375 bp) were identical. Only two COI haplotypes were found, differing by two out of 644 nucleotide positions (0.3% K2P distance). The variant haplotype was found in one A. similis male, and probably represents intraspecific variability. The results strongly suggest that all studied females and males belong to only one species with dimorphic males. -

The study aimed to characterize the distribution of soil mite populations (Acari: Gamasina) from several terrestrial ecosystems, some of them little studied in Romania as well as in Europe. We studied the Gamasina communities in seven ecosystem types from the Doftana Valley, Prahova County: Luzulo-Fagetum beech forest; Medio-European limestone beech forest of the Cephalanthero-Fagion; Pannonic woods with Quercus petraea and Carpinus betulus; Galio-carpinetum oak – hornbeam forests; Alpine rivers and their ligneous vegetation with Myricaria germanica; alluvial shrub, characteristic for a hilly-mountain area, with Salix purpurea; adjacent area to an inland cliff ecosystem. A total of 240 soil samples, 63 species and 475 individuals were analysed. The samples were taken from May 2006 till September 2010. The highest numerical abundance and species diversity was found in the area located nearby to an inland cliff, which is an early succession stage ecosystem. Considering the dominance and constancy indices quantified for mites from all investigated areas, the highest percent was recorded by the recedent-subrecedent and accessory-accidental species. -
