Hope everyone celebrated Memorial Day with family and friends honoring our Pearl Har- bor Survivors and other war veterans. It’s very important that we remember the sacrifices made by these heroes to keep America free. With this in mind, I would like to announce that Richard Hugen, SDPHS 3rd District Director, is compiling a reference library of books having to do with the . A list of books and other printed mate- rial with a synopsis of each will be posted on the SDPHS website and people will be able to contact Richard for more information. This will not be a lending library. Richard will make portions of the books available to academic enquiries and those researching details of the attack. If you have any books about the December 7th attack, please contact Richard directly at [email protected]. He would love to hear from you.

Since our approval as an IRS 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, we have received dona- tions from the ILWU Credit Union in Wilmington, CA and the Nicholas J. & Anna K. Bouras Foundation in Summit, NJ in memory of PHS John Mathrusse. We are very appreciative of these donations. If you know of an organization that would like to donate money to our organization, please have them contact me directly. The Executive Board would like to collect enough funding for a memorial bench to be constructed and located at one of our National Cemeteries or Museums in the next two years.

As promised, we have added some new items to the Small Stores to include Tervis cups, thank you cards, lapel and flag pins, and challenge coins. Check out the items in this issue of the Offspring. Please feel free to order as many items as you would like. I am still working on having the Small Stores available on the SDPHS website.

Our next Offspring will be coming out after Veteran’s Day. Plan to do something special by marching in a parade, taking a Pearl Harbor Survivor or veteran to lunch, or visit a home for veterans and let them know how much you ap- preciate them. Above all else, Remember Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, Lest We Forget!

Thank you, Deidre Kelley

Members of SDPHS Bluebonnet Chapter 3, Houston, were well represented at the annual SDPHS Convention in New Orleans this past December. After that successful event, the group continued to remember and celebrate our servicemen and woman at several events in the Houston Area: • March 23 Living History Weekend at the Museum of the American GI in College Station, TX • April 13 West Houston Air Show recruiting event • May 27 (Memorial Day) at the Houston National Cemetery & lunch • July 4 (Independence Day) Friendswood Parade & lunch Living History weekend is an annual event featuring military vehi- cles and equipment as well as reenactments through various armed conflicts in American history. The Bluebonnet Chapter was there with an SDPHS banner at the event.

The group attends an annual Memorial Day remembrance event that takes place at the Houston National Cemetery. There is a small parade, and SDPHS participates and displays the Bluebonnet Chapter SDPHS banner. This year the Bluebonnet Chapter was represented by two Child Survivors, Jill Allen (2nd photo, front row left) and Ann McKennis (2nd photo, front row right). Ad- ditionally, Dr. Du Hua (3rd photo), author of The Escapes and My Journey to Freedom as well as a passionate speaker at the event joined the Bluebonnet Chapter members for lunch.

Most recently the group participated in the Friendswood Indepen- dence Day parade and was featured briefly on a local news chan- nel. Associate member Tony Maloney provided a Humvee for the parade.

Illinois Illinois State Chairman Lynn Shindel was the guest speaker on Memorial Day at the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial in Miller Park in Bloomington, Illinois. He will be speaking later this month with the McClean County Antique Car Assn.

Bob and I had the opportunity to share our Pearl Harbor display on two occasions this year. The first one was over the Memorial Day weekend. We setup for two days at a friend’s store Angelus in Walworth, WI.

We had very positive feedback and many families came through to learn about Pearl Harbor and members of the Greatest Generation. It was great to see kids interested. I spent some quality time with a family whose teenagers were intrigued by the letters I showed them from service personnel writing their sweethearts. They were also impressed with the penmanship these service members had back in the day, something that is lost in today’s culture.

We had a great time keeping history alive. Bob Miller, Clarence J. Miller and Eric “Rick” Miller

Strangers in the Night By Jason Ockrassa

Patricia, “Pat”, Campbell was a 10 year old Navy daughter in 1941. She lived near the main gates to both Hickam Field and Pearl Harbor. She lived just off the narrow gauge rail line that would be used by the pineapple trains. She and others would wait by the tracks and ask workers to throw some pineapples their way, and they always would. You can start to see that she really was enjoying growing up on Oahu. The story that catches my eyes is the evening of 6 Dec and the after story.

The first weekend of Dec in 1941 was very busy. Many unit and ship competitions were planned for the entire weekend. It was the first time in a long time that two divisions were not out to sea training; Patricia “Pat” Campbell and because of that, around 187 vessels were in the harbor. Bloch Arena was booked also as you can guess. On Friday they held boxing matches, also known as Smokers, and Saturday was double booked with the Jitterbug Contest and the Battle of Music.

Saturday night 6 Dec 1941 was truly the calm before the storm. It stayed around 73 degrees F all evening with a calm breeze. I can only imagine the feeling of being able to hear the music in the Naval Yard and also what it was like to be in attendance at Bloch Arena that night. While much of the world was at war, things were “good” in . It was normal that service members and family members would gather for such event – and Pat did just that. Jack Evans Pat was a great fan of music and a “better than average” jitterbug dancer. As the event was going on, Joe Fischer, who was the emcee that night, noticed Pat since she was close to the front of the audience. Joe knew Pat and he knew that she could dance! Joe asked if anyone in the audience would dance with her. A young sailor agreed and the two competed. Little else is known of how the competition progressed, but by the end of the evening they won the contest and received the “Champion Navy Jitterbug 1941” Trophy.

With the dance concluded these two young souls parted ways; neither knowing much about the other, not even a name. The following day would of course change both of their lives with the attack on Oahu. But the subject of this piece is not the attack, but rather a continuing interest that Pat had for that last Saturday of peace.

In 1999, Pat chose to share her oral history at the Pearl Harbor Visitor’s Center and stated she would like to know who the sailor was she danced with. This started the search. First step was to look through the National Park Service (NPS) archives and then send a

10 Jitterbug and Battle of the Music trophies Offspring Issue 2, 2019 Offspring Issue 2, 2019 Pearl Harbor History

letter to the Pearl Harbor Gram. With help from John Rutledge who was a pianist for Band #16 USS , her story was shared with “The Scuttlebutt” out of Pensacola, FL.

Shortly after posting her story, Pat received a call from her Sailor. After almost 59 years, her mystery had been solved, his name was Jack Evans. Jack was a 17 year old Sailor on BB-43 USS Tennessee in 1941, and had been wounded on 7 Dec 1941. In another one of these small world ironies that I enjoy hearing, Jack and Pat lived only 15 miles apart! The two went to Pearl Harbor for the 60th Anniversary and danced at the Gala Dinner for the first time since 1941.

Patricia “Pat” Campbell Author’s Notes: This story hits me as a historian, I have “hunt for an answer” instinct. Whether it be a dancing partner like this or another story, finding out the name Joe George is very satisfying. Along with discovering his name in 2001, we were able to connect him to saving six men of the USS Arizona. This is one of the few times that a story found me (instead of the other way around). I owe a huge thank you to Pat Campbell who read my last entry and reached out to another NPS Ranger. I also thank her and Eric Miller for staying on me to have a post for this issue as I have been busy with many things with work as of late. I find it interesting that the two stories I have written so far occurred at the same venue in 1941. The trophies for both events, (Battle of the Bands by Band #8 USS Pennsylvania and The Jitterbug by Pat Campbell) were donated to the NPS and now sit next to each other in the same display case. It is particularly appropriate to share this story now, since Jack Evans passed away a couple months ago. I am honored to continue his story. -Jason Ockrassa

President Kelley asked the Board to revisit the December 7, 2018 voted to change convention dates to odd years rather than even years. The motion was 2nd by Mary Purifoy. Approved unanimously.
