A Letter from the Pastor

October 19, 2014 Dear Friends,

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY On World Mission Sunday, Catholics of the world unite at Mass to recommit ourselves to our vocation, through Baptism, to be missionaries. The Church’s missionary activity begins with the proclamation of faith: “Jesus is Lord!” He is our common hope - a hope that saves.

On World Mission Sunday, we are called in a special way to be missionaries through prayer and participation in the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

As we pray and respond on World Mission Sunday here at home, we are sharing in those celebrations taking place in every parish, seminary, school and convent all over the world. Our brothers and sisters in the Missions themselves offer their prayers and sacrifices so that others may come to know Jesus.

In a world where so much divides us, World Mission Sunday rejoices in our unity as missionaries! And it provides an opportunity to support the life-giving presence of the Church among the poor and suffering in more than 1,150 mission dioceses.

Making a World of Difference…

In the early 19 th century in , a young laywoman, Pauline Jaricot became inspired by news from the missions of her day - our own country included! She began gathering together small groups – mostly workers in her family’s silk factory. She asked each member of the group to offer daily prayer and a weekly sacrifice of a sou (the equivalent of a penny at that time), insisting that her efforts be for all the Church’s missions. From Pauline’s vision came the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. The first collection in 1822 supported the vast diocese of Louisiana, and the missions of Kentucky and China.

Your prayers and generous support on World Mission Sunday, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, directly benefit the mission Church today – places like Mongolia where the young church is growing, filled with zeal for the faith but lacking resources for its outreach to families and those in need. In Mongolia, your prayers and assistance help to build new schools and churches, train catechists, run medical centers, and provide for English and skills training classes and homes for children with disabilities and who are homeless.

Throughout the Missions, that support keeps the following going day in and day out: • 9,000 clinics caring for the sick and dying. • 10,000 orphanages, providing a place of safety and shelter. • 900,000 children in some of the poorest parts of the world, receiving an education and the knowledge of God’s great love. • 80,000 seminarians preparing for the priesthood. • 9,000 religious Sisters and Brothers in formation programs.

All of these things take place in 1,150 mission dioceses, mostly in Africa and Asia, where the poorest of the poor receive an education and health care, while experiencing the loving heart of our Lord through the service of priests, religious and lay faithful.

Let us be in spirit, prayer and support of the Mission of the Church and help our Holy Father, Francis, in his work of spreading the Good News especially to “the poorest, the weakest and the least important.”

Saint Joseph, Pray for Us!
