Whether or not that is true, one thing is certain: Men and beasts will kill to claim it.Meanwhile, a young woman, now merchandise, has been brought to the slave markets of Gor after displeasing a stranger in her secretarial job back on Earth. Unbeknownst to her, she holds the key to finding the elusive package—and changing the course of history forever.Inspired by works like Edgar Rice Burroughs’s John Carter of Mars novels and Robert E. Howard’s Almuric, this adventure series—alternatively referred to by several names including the Chronicles of Counter-Earth or the Saga of Tarl Cabot—has earned a devoted following for its richly detailed world building, erotic themes, and mash-up of science fiction, fantasy, history, and philosophy.Plunder of Gor is the 34th book in the Gorean Saga, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order. I have read the entire saga enough times that I do not need 30,000 words worth of I am not a slave, I am a free woman, and oh, I am a slave, and on and on and on ad naseum. I seriously do not see an intelligent woman of Earth, running around screaming la kajira to be part of a world like Gor. I mean, in all honesty, they can travel to the Middle East and pretty much experience the same thing...Or for that matter, a not so intelligent secretary piping up with, But surely you do not believe all this about another world, another planet, one secretly in our own system, shielded by the sun, concealed by gravitational adjustments, an Antichthon, a Counter-Earth?Bah. It took me FOREVER to get past the constant repetitions of dialogue (Im a free woman. No youre not), and in all honesty, there was no logical reason for John Norman to again mention what a Kef is, or many other things he repeated, and has continuously repeated with each book.I honestly found myself skipping over most of the book. Maybe there was a good story in there. John Norman needs to learn to get to the meat of the story. If theres another after this, well, I wont be purchasing it. This book was worth maybe 99 cents in eBook form. Ive read far better books for that price.Boo John Norman. Big boo. • Barsoom Demographics and More by Cristian Sildan
BARSOOMIAN DEMOGRAPHY , POLITY , SOCIETY AND ECONOMY BARSOOMIAN DEMOGRAPHY , POLITY , SOCIETY AND ECONOMY Cristian Sildan 2006 I’m one of these fans who likes to deepen and overana- lyze the structure of an imaginary world when he sees a good one. Barsoom is one of the excellent ones. But it’s not like ERB’s a prophet and his cycle a holy book or something. We fans have to work with the good ideas of the Magister, add and make them more precise when not sufficiently well expressed, and to counter them when not good enough. Den Valdron, with whom I’ve exchanged some ideas and who told me to send you this work of mine, has already done that by demonstrating that Korus cannot possibly be at the South Pole, for example. An incredible number of persons work on ERB’s imaginary universe(s). I hope I’ll be one of them if you consider my little work here worthy to be added to theirs. 1 BARSOOMIAN DEMOGRAPHY , POLITY , SOCIETY AND ECONOMY Many aspects of Barsoom have been treated with surprising detail, including religion and linguis- tics. I’m interested in demography, polity and socio- economic stuff, so that’s what I’ll talk about in the material below. I’ll take into account what other “barsoomologists” have written. Very important to me will be the map of the planet and its canals, by Rick Johnson. It may be criticized for being too simplified compared to Lowel’s but on the other hand, ERB himself doesn’t present us a world that’s too crisscrossed with canals.

Introduction A DEPONENT VERB HAS A MORPHOLOGICALLY PASSIVE FORM but active mean- ing (Bennett 1907). Classical examples of deponent verbs come from Latin and have been much discussed in the literature, going back to Roman times. In Latin, a verb in passive form and a deponent verb share the same paradigm, but contrast in meaning with respect to voice: (1) Verb in passive form amor ‘I am loved’ ama:mur ‘we are loved’ ama:ris ‘you are loved’ ama:mini: ‘you are loved’ ama:tur ‘he is loved’ amantur ‘they are loved’ (2) Deponent verb mi:ror ‘I admire’ mi:ra:mur ‘we admire’ mi:ra:ris ‘you admire’ mi:ra:mini: ‘you admire’ mi:ra:tur ‘he admires’ mi:rantur ‘they admire The specific question we attempt to tackle in this paper is why certain Latin verbs are deponent. Compared to recent works on Latin deponent verbs (Embick 2000, Sadler and Spencer 2001; Kiparsky 2005) which avoid this question by simply assigning Latin deponents a syntactico-semantic or * We owe thanks to many people who helped with this project. First is October Dow, who did the original manual tagging of the deponent verbs in the Oxford Latin Dictionary. Richard Larson spent a good deal of time discussing our semantic findings with us. Philip Baldi, Andrew Carstairs-McCarthy, Alice Harris, Beth Levin, and Martin Maiden provided very quick feed- back on an earlier draft of this work, for which we are grateful.
