The development concept of the new Land Cruiser is “Advanced Robust- ness”. “Robustness” is part of the Land Cruiser DNA and “Advanced” is what the model needs to be to remain at the top of its segment. The briefing I gave to my development team, based on customer feed- back and our internal re-evaluation of the current model, was based on 3 pillars: - Create a new design for both the interior and the exterior so that customers can immediately identify the vehicle as the new Land Cruiser - Strengthen the Land Cruiser’s off-road legend by adopting new technologies that will further enhance its off-road abilities for all cus- tomers - Achieve a higher level of safety and comfort thanks to new equip- ment Although still instantly recognisable as a Land Cruiser, the new exte- rior has a more modern and robust look, thanks to the updated rear and completely redesigned front featuring a new grille and hood. The interior provides the occupants with a more sophisticated envi- ronment, thanks to the new instrument panel, new centre console and the premium quality trim and finishes. The new Land Cruiser adopts several new specifications to further increase its off-road capabilities, such as the new Torsen Limited Slip Differential, while at the same time providing a high level of on-road driving comfort. 10 The level of safety has also been increased with the introduction of several new features and the availability of Toyota Safety Sense. And, last but not least, we’re introducing several new comfort features such as ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. In terms of the development process, which was the biggest challenge you and your team were faced with? Safety is one of the core values of Toyota. Our belief is that we should make the best technology widely available to our customers because it is only when safety systems are in widespread use that they can have a real impact on the elimination of traffic accidents and fatalities. And making Toyota Safety Sense available on the new Land Cruiser was probably our biggest challenge during the development. The current generation Land Cruiser was launched in 2009 and its existing electrical platform did not allow us to integrate all the safety features. Therefore my team spent a lot of time and effort in develop- ing a new electrical platform, including new ECUs and a completely new wiring harness. Thanks to its heritage of more than 65 years and the fact that it’s be- ing sold in more than 190 countries worldwide, Land Cruiser has be- come a truly iconic off-road vehicle. What are -according to you- the main reasons for the car’s global success? In my career at Toyota I’ve accumulated more than 30 years of experi- ence with off-road vehicles. Abstract 4WD systems include various constructions aimed at optimal distribution of torque between drive axles. In these systems, it is necessary to apply mechanisms separating the power provided from the engine to drive wheels. Many systems operate on the basis of wet multi-disc clutch or/and dog clutch control with the use of mechatronic devices. However, in view of their reliability and construction simplicity, the most valuable 4WD systems under field conditions are mechanical solutions. Torsen is an inter-axle differential mechanism, where the emerging internal friction moment of this mechanism causes that all kinematic discrepancies between transmission shafts of the front and rear axle of a vehicle produce a change in the distribution of torque, helping to level the rotational speeds of transmission shafts of the front and rear axles. As a result of the phenomenon described, the drive wheels of both axles of the vehicle move with different peripheral speeds, which causes energy losses and wear of tyres on both vehicle axles. This paper presents an analysis of the results obtained in tests on a vehicle with the Torsen system and describes phenomena occurring in the examined system as a result of emerging kinematic discrepancies, which may be caused by such factors as vertical force acting on the wheels of individual drive axles and tyre pressure.

The performance aspects in various driving conditions are considered such as acceleration, gradeability and cornering performance. It is shown that acceleration and gradeability performance is nearly doubled for AWD compared to typical FWD vehicles. The report discusses concepts for transferring torque from left to right and from front to rear. This can be done through a clutch, through a differential or a so-called torque- vectoring device (TVD). Concepts such as limited slip couplings (LSC) and limited slip differentials (LSD) as well as TVDs are discussed in further detail. Limited slip implies that speed differences across the clutch or differential is controlled by various means. Three different ways of actuating the clutch used on either an LSC or LSD are: • Torque based LSDs operating on difference in traction across the differential. Basically, the torque based LSD will self-lock proportional to the torque difference. • Actuation on speed difference between input and output (slip). Slip based clutches can often be electronically controlled which allows them to interact with other electronically controlled chassis systems (such as ABS).

Abstract: The main objective of this project is to develop a CAD model of torsen differential for SAE SUPRA vehicle by using SOLIDWORKS and perform the simulation considering different materials. ANSYS-15 is the simulation software utilized for finding stresses, strains and deformation of mating gears under the torque supplied by the engine to the differential and comparing results for different materials. The static structural analysis was performed on the differential gears. The materials selectedfor the analysis are Aluminum-7075, Steel-4340 and Grey Cast Iron. Keywords: Gear design, Assembly, Simulation, Analysis. Introduction: The differential is an essential component of the powertrain of a vehicle. The engine is where power is generated. The transmission uses gears and gear trains to convert the engine’s power into speed and torque. The power from the engine is transferred to the differential before it reaches the output, the wheels of the vehicle. It is the main component that transmits movement from the engine to the wheels. Differentials are used in every car, since they are needed in simple operations, like turning a corner. When a car is turning a corner, the inner wheel spins slower than the outer wheel. Without a differential, there would be wheel slippage or fracturing of the drive shaft due to the differences in the wheel velocity. The differential allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds, while transmitting torque to the ground.
