BACKGROUND Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO) has started its journey in 1988 with a noble vision to stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalized people. Being a peoples' centered organization, we envisioned for a society which will be free from inequality and injustice, a society where no child will cry from hunger and no life will be ruined by poverty. Over the last thirty years of relentless efforts to make this happen, we have embraced new grounds and opened up new horizons to facilitate the disadvantaged and vulnerable people to bring meaningful and lasting changes in their lives. During this long span, we have adapted with the changing situation and provided the most time-bound effective services especially to the poor and disadvantaged people. Taking into account the government development policies, we are currently implementing a considerable number of projects and programs including micro-finance program through a community focused and people centered approach to accomplish government’s development agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN as a whole.

  • Operational Constraints in Conventional Managed Aquifer Recharge in Barind Area at North-Western Region of Bangladesh
Proceedings of International Conference on Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering, 07 - 09 February 2019, Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology, Rajshahi, Bangladesh Operational Constraints in Conventional Managed Aquifer Recharge in Barind Area at North-Western Region of Bangladesh M. I. HOSSAIN1, M. N. BARI2, S. U. MIAH2 1Ph.D. Research Fellow, Department of Civil Engineering, Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology, Rajshahi, Bangladesh and Executive Engineer, Barind Multipurpose Development Authority, Rajshahi, Bangladesh. [email protected], [email protected] 2Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology, Rajshahi, Banladesh. Abstract Barind area located in the north-west region of Bangladesh is a drought prone water stressed area. Due to the gradual increasing demand of groundwater withdrawal for irrigation as well as domestic use, huge number of deep tube-wells have been installed in this region. As a consequence, groundwater table is depleting in the Barind tract. Moreover, storm water cannot percolate during the monsoon due to the clay layer more than 40 ft depth from the ground surface. Therefore, the negligible natural recharge of groundwater indicates Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) is needed through artificial Recharge Well (RW). Conventional MAR system like recharge well and shaft were installed in the canal and performance was evaluated in the field. The quality of canal water was also determined. During the study it was observed that recharge rate was gradually decreasing and finally recharge was stopped. This is due to the siltation and clogging of top layer of recharge unit. A 40 mm to 80 mm thick muddy silt layer was observed on the top surface of recharge unit and canal bed when canal was completely dried up.

Iquebal Hossain*1, Md. Niamul Bari2 and Shafi Uddin Miah3 1Postgraduate student, Rajshahi University of Engineeering & Technology, Bangladesh, and Executive Engineer, Barind Multipurpose Development Authority, e-mail: [email protected] 2Professor, Rajshahi University of Engineeering & Technology, Bangladesh, e-mail: [email protected] 3Professor, Rajshahi University of Engineeering & Technology, Bangladesh, e-mail: [email protected] *Corresponding Author ABSTRACT The study aims to focus on the opportunities and challenges of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) at the drought prone water stressed Barind area, north-west region of Bangladesh. Almost three crops are produced round the year as the area is mostly flood free. The lower amount of rainfall than country-wide average as well as less percolation capacity of thick top clay layer lies above the potential aquifer at higher depth put constraint for groundwater resource development. On the other hand due to low or no flow of water in the river and gradual extraction of groundwater for irrigation causes the declination of groundwater table which demands Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) for the area. The MAR technique, previously known as ‘artificial recharge’ - a water banking system is a viable adaptation menu for subsequent recovery, future use and environmental benefits. Major opportunities are about 2000 km re-excavated Kharies (canals) containing about 750 nos. check dam, more than 3000 re-excavated ponds, number of Beels (comparatively large marshes) and other water bodies which are used to conserve runoff storm water for supplementary irrigation for about 5-7 months.

  • Cropping Systems and Land Use Pattern in Rajshahi Region
Bangladesh Rice J. 21 (2) : 237-254, 2017 Cropping Systems and Land Use Pattern in Rajshahi Region M Harun Ar Rashid1*, A B M J Islam2, B J Shirazy2 and S M Shahidullah2 ABSTRACT Attempts have been made in this paper to overview the existing cropping patterns, crops diversity and cropping intensity in Rajshahi region. The study was conducted in all the upazilas of four districts of Rajshahi region during 2014-15 using pre-tested semi-structured questionnaires. The most predominating crop in this area was rice where exclusive rice based patterns occupied 40.48% of NCA. Boro-Fallow-T. Aman was the dominant cropping pattern, occupied 22.83% of NCA in 27 upazilas out of 32. The second dominant cropping pattern in Rajshahi region was Boro-Fallow-Fallow. It occupied 7.23% of NCA of the region and existed in 28 upazilas. Wheat-Fallow-T. Aman was the 3rd dominant pattern and practiced in 4.34% of the NCA in 14 upazilas. The data also revealed that the wheat based patterns stands for 14.7% of NCA. Mustard-Boro-T. Aman was the 4th dominant cropping pattern. A total of 172 cropping patterns were recognized in this region and the maximum (36) numbers of cropping patterns were identified in Paba upazila nearly followed by Durgapur (35) and Chapainawabganj upazila (34) while the lower numbers of cropping patterns were identified in Charghat (11) followed by Bagha (12) upazila of Rajshahi district. The range of cropping intensity values was recorded 171−253%. The maximum value was for Badalgachhi of Naogaon district and minimum for Bagha of Rajshahi district.
