 Conservation of Buduruwagala monolithic statues The special mission accomplished by the chemical conservation division during this year was conservation of half raised monolithic statues carved on a rock about 60 feet in height situated in the Buduruwagala village of Divisional Secretariat Wellawaya in Monaragala District. At the middle there is a standing Buddha Statue about 51 feet height. The height of the seat is about 6 feet. The remaining parts of mortar and colors disclose that the space was covered with a layer of motar of 6 mm thickness and had been colored after curving this half raised monolithic image. Another 3 half raised Buddha statues were curved at either sides of the particular Buddha statue. Some parts of mortar layer of the Awalokitheshwara image of Buddha aspirant located at the right side have been largely remained.

It could be seen that the upper part, hands and either sides of the middle standing Buddha Statue was covered with Algae, Potter Wasp Nest Potter and other waste materials. Some parts of the remaining motar layer of the main standing Buddha Statue also was detaching. Among the other statues the statue believed to be the statue of Manju Sri Buddha aspirant was covered with Algae. Almost a half of the surface of the statue believed to be the statue of prince Sudhana situated at the right side of the Buddha statue was covered with Algae. At the first stage of conserving process of statues spider webs, Potter Wasp Nest was removed by means of small surgical equipment. Algae and other waste materials were removed by using chemicals. Finally detaching parts were ensured and a safety liquid was applied on the decaying layer of motar.
