Vision The Vision of the Department of Archaeology is to promote the proper management of Sri Lanka's archaeological heritage. 2. Mission The mission of the Department of Archaeology is function as Sri Lanka's apex institution and chief regulatory body for the management of it's archaeological heritage. 3. Objectives In order to fulfil its mission, the objectives of the Archeological Department are: 1. Development of Resources 1. Human 2. Institutional 3. No. 07 - Lahugala zone Performance Report (2013) - 205 Exploration and Documentation Division Functions 1. Conducting special and immediate researches. 2. Declaring archeological reserves. 3. Declaring archeological sites and monuments. 4. Preventing destruction of artefacts and effecting Ordinance agaist artifact destruction attempts 5. Researching into effects of archeology 6. hRecommending archeological vlues on proposed places of excavation projects 7. Collecting geographical information on archeological sites and monuments and mapping them. 8. Conducting coastal researches. 9. Researching into ancient irrigational heritage and working out a protective network. 10. Planning out works. 11. Answering problems on archeological sites and monumnts in districts and handling administrative matters. Archeological investigations and documentations carried out at provincial level by Investigation division Westen province 1. The regional archelogical office (Western) had identified around 23 monumetns including a pre-historically important rock cave by archeological survey conducted around Pathakada Devolkanda. Out of them, around 10 monumetns have been proposed to declare as archeological secured monuments' Central province 2. Around 88 monumnts identified by Excavation project in Medadumbara DS division by Regional Archeological office (Cental) have been proposed to declare Also lined up to propse the rock cave sites with rain water protection czrving and witout that in the Babaragala area. Southern province 1. Around 30 monumetns have been recognized by basic investigation conducted by Regional Archeolocial office (South) around Devenuwara Develaya. Out of this, the Upulawan Devalaya in Devinuwara has been already decared as an archeologically secured monument' North Western province 1. 34 archeological sites hve ben found by second stage of investigation in Nawagattegama DS division by the North Western regional archeolocial office. Out of them, around 20 to be declared as archeologicall secured monuments. Among afroementioend places, rocky cemetery too are included and sites where lies most number of artifacts to be declared as an archeological reserve 2. The Arankele archeological investigation conducted by the aforesaid office had been traced 108 monuments and recorded. There, around 41 movable artifacts had been certified. The old Palugawewa tank bund, Relapanawa, canal system and rock cave situated out of the Arankele reserve to be declared as secured monuments' Performance Report (2013) - 206 Sabaragamuwa province 3. Around 18 monumetns have been traced from the reserve of Salgala Aranya by the Sabaragamuwa regional Archeological office. There, water protective carvng and 08 rock caves including a cave with Brahmi letter had been found .' 4. Around 50 archeological sites have been identified and recorded by aforesaid office at the second stage of basic investigation of the Beligala reserve. As those monuments of thosed archeolocal sites have been lying on a wider area and it is proposed to survey the sadi premises before declaring as an archeolocial reserve. Due to the vass area of the premises, further investigation at this archeolocial compled to be conducted in two stages' Eastern province 5. The special project of identifying and recording archeolocial sites in all DS divisions in the Ampara district with ministerial allocatiosn undr the supervision of investigation division of the head offce had been traced 427 artefacts. Around thise land blocks with artifacts, archeological boundaries have been laid. ' 6. The archeological site in ascertaining Pulukunawa archeological site conducted in line with the Deyata Kirula programme by investigation unit of the Head office had been identified and archeological boundaries have been laid.' Archeological Damage Appraisal survey carried out by Investigation Division 7. No archeologically valued items had been found in the first and second stages of the Archeological Damage appraisal survey jointly conducted by the proposed head office for the Sooriyawewa-Sevanagala BOI project based on the Sooriyawewa and Sevanagala areas of Southern province and Uva province with Southern and Uva provincial Archeological offices' 8. The archeological sites found by Archelogical Effects Appraisal Survey at Karuwalagaswewa in the North Western province had been reserved with archeological boundary markings and rest of the area of the proposed premises had been recommended for cultivation purposes' Ocean archeological investigation project conduted by Investigation division 1. The survey on ancient ship submerged in the sea around Godawaya in the Southern province was conducted by the Ocean Archeological Unit with aids given by Texas and Soubourn universities in America and France respectively. This survey commenced in the year 2008 and continue up to year 2013 and artefacts found are being conserved and the researching of them to be done in the year 2014' 2.
