LEA DELARIA seems to have achieved overnight stardom with her two time, SAG Award winning, stand-out role as Carrie ‘Big Boo’ Black in the Netflix hit series Orange is the New Black. However, DeLaria’s multi-faceted career as a comedian, actress, and jazz musician has, in fact, spanned decades. DeLaria holds the distinction of being the first openly gay comic on television in America which led to countless television and film roles portraying police lieutenants, PE teachers and the lesbian who inappropriately hits on straight women. Selected TV credits: Awkward, Clarence, Californication, The Oblongs, One Live to Live, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Will and Grace, Friends, & Matlock. Selected film credits: First Wives Club, Dear Dumb Diary, Edge of Seventeen. She’s received Obie & Theater World Awards and a Drama Desk nomination for her portrayal as Hildy in the Public Theatre’s revival of On The Town, an Ovation nomination for The Boys From Syracuse, and has played both Eddie & Dr. Scott in the gender-bending Broadway musical The Rocky Horror Show. DeLaria was the featured vocalist at the 50th Anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival, and has performed in some of the most prestigious houses in the world including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Chicago Symphony, Hollywood Bowl, The Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House. DeLaria has five records on the Warner Jazz and Classics label, and her book, Lea's Book of Rules for the World, is in its third printing at Bantam Doubleday and Dell. Ryan May 2021 Examining Committee Members: Jan Fernback, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Ron Becker, External Member, Miami University ABSTRACT This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation.

Sarah Artt and Anne Schwan, 2016] Screening Women’s Imprisonment: Agency and Exploitation in Orange is the New Black Editors: Sarah Artt and Anne Schwan Based on Piper Kerman’s 2010 memoir Orange is the New Black: My Time in a Women’s Prison, Jenji Kohan’s adaptation for Netflix follows white middle-class New Yorker Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) into the fictional Litchfield Penitentiary where she encounters a diverse community of incarcerated women. Together with House of Cards and Hemlock Grove, Orange is the New Black (OITNB) was one of the first original series commissioned by on-demand streaming platform Netflix. At the time of writing, three seasons, produced by Lionsgate, have screened (2013-2015), with a further four seasons to follow (Littleton 2016). Season one introduces Piper and the audience to the world of the prison, including a core group of women such as Alex Vause (Laura Prepon), Piper’s former girlfriend whose drug smuggling business she had been implicated in ten years prior; Galina “Red” Reznikova (Kate Mulgrew), one of the show’s older women who has built an empire through her role as cook; Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren (Uzo Aduba) who develops a romantic obsession with Piper; Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson (Danielle Brooks), one of a group of black women who challenge Piper’s internalized privilege; butch lesbian Carrie “Big Boo” Black, played by comedian Lea DeLaria; “white trash” drug addict Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett (Taryn Manning) who becomes Piper’s nemesis in season one; Gloria Mendoza (Selenis Leyva) who challenges Red over the kitchen empire; and Dayanara “Daya” Diaz (Dascha Polanco) who falls in love with (and is impregnated by) officer John Bennett (Matt McGorry).
