Afraid of Bear to Zuni: Surnames in English of Native American Origin Found Within
RAYNOR MEMORIAL LIBRARIES Indian origin names, were eventually shortened to one-word names, making a few indistinguishable from names of non-Indian origin. Name Categories: Personal and family names of Indian origin contrast markedly with names of non-Indian Afraid of Bear to Zuni: Surnames in origin. English of Native American Origin 1. Personal and family names from found within Marquette University Christian saints (e.g. Juan, Johnson): Archival Collections natives- rare; non-natives- common 2. Reamer GARLAND AND THE INDIANS, In his long and prolific career as a professional write, Hamlin Gar land handled a wealth of subject matter and tried to achieve success in many genres. One area of his writing has received too little atten tion-his work with the American Indian.! Garland's interest in, the Indian, was only one strand in the rich weave of a dynamic, enthusi astic personality, but his work with this material reveals the man and also his eventual mastery of a clear, effortless narrative. prose style, the style of his better known "Border" series.' I. The sympathetic attitude toward the red man which Garland dis plays in his Indian stories is curious even at first glance because it is not what one expects to find in a man who prided himself as being the son of true pioneers. -

The guide was developed to meet provisions of the 1989 Wisconsin Act 31 that required social studies curriculum to include instruction on treaty rights and tribal sovereignty. The first three sections are self-contained teaching sections for elementary, middle, and higil school students that begin with a brief overview of Wisconsin Indian cultures, political structures, and relationships to the environment. Each section includes nine learning activities that address the nature of the federal-Indian relationship up to the end of the treaty-making era, examine reservations established for Wisconsin Indians and the status of nonreservation Indians, consider the relationship of acculturation to treaty rights, and explore the reaffirmation of treaty rights and the status of Wisconsin Indian peoples today. -

The akm ing and muting of an indigenous media activist: Imagination and ideology in Charles Round Low Cloud's “Indian News” Abstract In this article, I examine an example of American Indian activism through the once-dominant mass medium of the newspaper. I focus on Ho-Chunk author Charles Round Low Cloud and his development of an “Indian News” column into a vehicle for activism against everyday forms of racial oppression in the 1930s and on the ways others involved in publishing his column used the medium to subvert his message. The na alysis shows how nonindigenous actors can mute activist messages through practices designed to celebrate indigenous voices. -

Warriors in Wild West Shows
INDIAN WARRIORS IN THE BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIGHORN & WILD WEST SHOWS Between 1883 and 1930, Wild West Shows gave Indian warriors a chance to depict their abilities in warfare and beauty of culture through their many performances before audiences in the United States and Europe. Some of the warrior veterans who fought in the Battle of the Little Bighorn were among these performers. “Indians flocked to the Wild West show because they were innovative, courageous men and women searching for a means of economic and cultural survival, and the show offered better hope for that than just about any other paying job.” 1 The references listed indicate the source for the warrior in the Wild West Show(s). The references for the warriors at the Little Bighorn are listed in the Friends of the Little Bighorn Battlefield website. In some cases, a number of warriors performed in more than one Wild West Show. This list is not complete and we are always trying to make improvements and corrections.
