    23 May 2016 Australian Press Release: Koala Protection Act sent to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull Koala Foundation The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) has written to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, Nationals Leader Barnaby Joyce and Greens Leader Richard A.C.N. 010 922 102 Di Natale today to request their support for a Koala Protection Act. The Koala Protection Act is a piece of national legislation that has been formulated by the AKF in consultation with legal teams in Australia and overseas focusing on protecting Koala habitat. Current legislation focuses on the Koala itself but not their habitat. A draft of the Act was enclosed, along with a Statutory Declaration for all leaders to sign prior to the election that states that they will seek to support the Koala via this legislation should they be re-elected. CEO of the AKF Deborah Tabart OAM said that the Act is based on the USA’s Bald Eagle Act that brought the Bald Eagle back from the brink of extinction. She said as Australia’s national icon, the Koala needs the same strength of purpose. “It is not our intention to offend the leaders by requesting they sign a Statutory Declaration, but rather a determination borne of frustration over the AKF’s 30-year experience,” said Ms Tabart. “Since 1988 when I was appointed as CEO of the AKF I have had conversations and correspondence with the who’s who of Australian politics; Environment Ministers at the Federal level and Premiers at the State level."[see notes below] Ms Tabart said the number of Environment Ministers in each State and the Mayors of the 320 Councils in Koala Habitat that she has also corresponded with is too high to remember.

To begin, I would like to acknowledge the first nations and Traditional Owners of the land we are broadcasting from – I am currently on Kaurna land, where I live and write. I pay my respects to Elders past and present, and, as this is an online recording whose reach is far, to the Elders of the lands this recording might reach. For this event, we will be discussing home, spaces and histories. This is part of the wonderful EWF and is presented in collaboration with Essex Book Festival & Metal Culture, Southend. Tonight, we will be witnessing work by artists working between so-called Australia and Essex, England. They will be sharing artefacts from the archives of their personal histories. I anticipate there will be an intimacy tonight as we will be peering into these artists’ homes. Where we live and, who and what we share those spaces with, is intimate and vulnerable. In some ways the past year has allowed us to peer into each other’s homes over Zoom, but in others it has separated us from sharing space with people we cherish. I’d love to frame tonight as not only a look into these artist’s homes and lives but the creation of our own archive – capturing this moment through place and objects.

    ‘Pleasure of a High Order:’ Paolo Giorza and Music at Sydney’s 1879 International Exhibition Roslyn Maguire As Sydney’s mighty Exhibition building took shape, looking to the harbour from an elevated site above the Botanic Gardens, anxiety and excitement mounted. This was to be the first International Exhibition held outside Europe or America and musical entertainment was to be its greatest attraction.1 An average of three thousand people would attend each week day and as recent studies have shown, Sydney’s International Exhibition helped initiate reforms to education, town planning, technologies, photography, manufacturing and patronage of the arts, music and literature.2 Although under construction since January 1879, it was mid May before the Exhibition’s influential Executive Commissioner Patrick Jennings3 announced the appointment of his friend, Milanese composer Paolo Giorza4 as musical director: [H]is credentials are of such a nature both as a conductor, composer and artist, that I could not justly pass them over. I think that he should also be authorised to compose a march and cantata for the opening ceremony … Signor Giorza offers to give his exclusive services as composer and director and performer on the organ and to organise a competent orchestra of local artists for promenade concerts, and to conduct the same.5 The extent of Jennings’s personal interest in Exhibition music is evident in this report publicising Giorza’s appointment. It amounts to one of the colony’s most interesting cultural documents for the ideas, attitudes and objectives it reveals, including consideration of whether an ‘Australian School of Music, as distinguished from any of the well-defined schools’ existed.

Congested roads, overcrowded emergency departments, or overflowing classrooms affect the daily lives of every family. A good government understands that targeted investments in infrastructure address these issues to make our lives better. The central policy challenge for NSW is improving our quality of life at a time of budget constraints, rising population and greater demands on services. Mike Baird is telling the people of NSW that he cannot address these challenges without privatising our publicly owned electricity network. But this is a risky and irresponsible plan that would leave us worse off in the long term, and guarantees we lose up to $1 billion every year in dividends that help fund the running of our schools and hospitals. Labor’s infrastructure plan does not rely on a risky sale of our electricity assets, and we will not transfer the profits generated by our electricity network to the private sector. Our plan will guarantee a long term funding source built on stable revenue measures that have been costed by the NSW Government appointed independent Parliamentary Budget Office.
