Ancient Ethiopia Meskel Tour Ancient Ethiopia Small Group Tour Meskel Festival, 25 Sep – 08 Oct This fully escorted small group tour takes in the very best of Ethiopia, from the famous Historic Route – Addis Ababa, Axum, Lalibela, Gondar, Lake Tana, and Bahir Dar – to the beautiful Simien Mountains, and little-visited Tigray, one of the most remote yet historically rich regions of the country. The programme is timed to coincide with the annual Palm Sunday festivities (we also have separate departures in January and April timed to coincide with the important Ethiopian festivals of Timkat and Palm Sunday). Information on how you can book onto this tour is provided at the end of the itinerary. Fri 25 Sep: Depart London Depart London Heathrow at 2100hrs. on the night flight to Addis. Sat 26 Sep: Arrive Addis Ababa Arrive Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Air at 7am. Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, you will be met by your guide and driven (approx. 20 mins.) to your hotel. Founded in 1886 by Menelik II, Addis is located at 2,500m above sea level in the Entoto mountain chain (which rise to 3,000m above sea level). The city enjoys an excellent Your Financial Protection All monies paid by you for the air holiday package shown [or flights if appropriate] are ATOL protected by the Civil Aviation Authority. Our ATOL number is ATOL 3145. For more information see our booking terms and conditions. climate all year round, with an average temperature of 25°C. It is a vibrant, developing city that is a pleasure to explore. After lunch at the hotel, we visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral, or Kidist Selassie, the second holiest site in Ethiopia. Unlike many of the churches you’ll visit during the tour, Kidist Selassie is a modern building, built between 1931 and 1944, though contained within its grounds is a much older church, the Bale Wold. The Cathedral is as much a national as it is a religious icon (in Ethiopia, Church and State are traditionally very closely bound) and commemorates those who fought against the Italian occupation of the late 1930s, many of whom are buried in the church grounds alongside Emperor Haile Selassie I. After touring the Cathedral, we visit the National Museum. Addis Ababa’s museum is among the best in Africa, containing an impressive collection of archaeological relics, foremost among them the plaster cast of "Lucy," the 3.2 million-year-old Hominid. Dinner and overnight stay in Saro Maria Hotel (4-star), or similar. Sun 27 Sep: Meskel celebrations Today marks the beginning of the Meskel celebrations. In the morning we'll take a stroll through the ‘Mercato’, East Africa’s largest market, before we return to the hotel for lunch. In the early afternoon we move to Meskel Square, where we have a special permit for you to enter. The festival, which lasts into the evening, begins with a procession of youth and clergy in festive dress, followed by performances from a number of different church choirs, gathered from every corner of the city. Each choir group wears its own unique processional clothing, which is ornately decorated and rich in symbolism, and perform chants and choral pieces, accompanied by dances and coordinated movements. The ceremony ends with the lighting of the Demera - a huge bonfire in the middle of the square. The priests will use the chebo (handheld gathered sticks) to light the Demera (tall tipi shaped sticks). The entire ceremony lasts about 3 hours. There is a special section of the square for travellers, ensuring a good view of the celebration. Early evening return to our hotel for dinner and overnight. Mon 28 Sep: Addis Ababa-Hawzen, Tigray After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport to catch your early morning flight to Mekele, where the group will board comfortable vehicles and commence the tour of ancient Tigray. Your explorations of Tigray begin with a visit to the dramatic Church of Michael Imba. This is an early cruciform and semi monolithic church that is typical of the region. Situated on a hill, reaching Michael Imba involves an easy walk up a rocky incline, followed by a short climb down to the church entrance, which is carved into the rock below the surface level. Gane and Marshall Tel: +44 (0)1822-600-600 e-mail: [email protected] website: www.ganeandmarshall.com From Michael Imba, we continue to Wukro for a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant, and then on to Abreha & Atsbeha, one of the most dramatic of the rock-hewn churches of Tigray. Dedicated to the famous kings of Axum, the two brothers Abreha & Atsbeha, who adopted Christianity in the 4th-century, this church is renowned for its magnificent 17th- century murals. In the late afternoon, time allowing we will visit a number of the other more prominent rock churches of the region, including Wukro Cherkos and Michael Debre Salam. We will also make time for a visit to the colourful market in one of the villages we visit. Abune Yemata, Tigray NB. The number of holy places visited during the day will depend on group dynamics and fitness levels as well as time spent at preceding churches. Late afternoon we continue to Gheralta Lodge, a remote mountain retreat, where we check-in for the evening. This boutique, Italian-owned lodge is set on a high hill overlooking the Gheralta plains. Constructed in the local Tigrayan-style, its stone, wood, and thatch huts blend in effortlessly with the wild, rural surrounds. Enjoy a fine dinner overlooking the dramatic landscapes of Tigray. Gheralta region, Tigray For those interested there is a small cave church, Teklehaimanot Hawzien, a few minutes’ walk from the lodge. Depending on the time of your arrival, you might like to visit the church before dinner. Gane and Marshall Tel: +44 (0)1822-600-600 e-mail: [email protected] website: www.ganeandmarshall.com Selassie Dugum Tues 29 Sep: Gheralta After breakfast at Gheralta Lodge, drive and walk to the nearby rock churches of Debre Maryam Korkor, remarkable for its Byzantine-inspired paintings, and Selassie Dugum. Time allowing, we shall stop for a simple coffee ceremony in a local coffee bar. Lunch will be after the church visits. Wed 30 Sep: Yeha and Axum Depart Tigray this morning for Axum, stopping en route at the ancient Temple of Yeha. A Sabean construct, Yeha is reputedly the oldest standing stone structure in Ethiopia, dating back to approx. 700BC. It only survives in part, but provides an important insight into what is sub-Saharan Africa’s oldest known civilisation. There is also a lively market at Yeha. Temple of Yeha Reach Axum this afternoon and check-in at the Yeha Hotel, or similar, for dinner and overnight. Late this afternoon, take a tour of Axum’s major sights, including the famous stellae and the Church of St Mary of Zion. Gane and Marshall Tel: +44 (0)1822-600-600 e-mail: [email protected] website: www.ganeandmarshall.com Thurs 01 Oct: Axum-Lalibela Catch the early flight from Axum to Lalibela, arriving late morning. Church of St. George, Lalibela Located at an altitude of 2,600 metres above sea level, the mountain city of Lalibela is remote even by Ethiopian standards. It has long been a holdout for the Orthodox Ethiopian Church, untouched by the Islamic conquests of the 16th-century and later European attempts at colonisation. For Orthodox Ethiopians, pilgrimage to the churches of Lalibela, where services are still held daily, is as important as the pilgrimage to Mecca is to devout Muslims. Nowhere in Ethiopia does the spirituality of its people echo louder than in Lalibela. Lalibela is of course most famous for its 12th-century monolithic churches, of which there are 11, each carved out of pink granite rock and collectively considered to be one of the wonders of the world. Each of the churches has a unique architectural style, though they share many features; most notably, each has been carved from the top-down, a technique not practiced anywhere else in the world. They are also beautifully decorated. Considered in isolation, each temple is remarkable, but taken together they are a wonder; the entire city has been described as a sculpture dedicated to the glory of God, and as you wander the complex network of tunnels and subterranean passageways that connect its underground structures you’ll come to appreciate why. The temples at Lalibela are loosely divided into two groups, and today we’ll take our time visiting the first. Overnight at Tukul Village, a charming lodge located within walking distance of the main Lalibela churches. Gane and Marshall Tel: +44 (0)1822-600-600 e-mail: [email protected] website: www.ganeandmarshall.com Fri 02 Oct: Lalibela Today we visit the second group of churches as well as the Monastery of Nakuto La’ab, named after its patron, the nephew and successor to King Lalibela. This is a simple cave church that is reminiscent of the rock churches of Tigray. Removed from the main Lalibela complex, it is often overlooked. Sat 03 Oct: Gondar Leave Lalibela on the late morning flight to Gondar, arriving early afternoon. After lunch, we begin our tour of the medieval city. Gondar was the capital city of the Ethiopian Empire during the reign of Fasilidas, who founded the city in the 1630s (the precise dates are unclear). It is set in a mountainous landscape of stunning beauty. Today we shall visit the city’s historic centrepiece, Gondar Castle, built by Emperor Fasilidas and his descendant, Yohannes I, and the fascinating Debre Birhan Selassie Church (a World Heritage site).

Dedicated to my late mother Tekea Gebru and my late sister Zufan Sereke Abstract Urban quality of life (QoL) is becoming the subject of urban research mainly in western and Asian countries. Such attention is due to an increasing awareness of the contribution of QoL studies in identifying problem areas and in monitoring urban planning policies. However, most studies are carried out at city or country level that commonly average out details at small scales. The result is that the variability of QoL at small scales is not well known. In addition, the relationship between subjective and objective QoL is not well known.

  • Amnesty International Public Statement
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC STATEMENT AI Index: 25/009/2014 10 December 2014 Ethiopia: Release protestors, stop crushing political opposition On 5 and 6 December, security services in Addis Ababa arrested an estimated 90 people during attempts to stage a demonstration by a coalition of nine opposition political parties. The arrests are the latest manifestation of the authorities’ hostility towards the political opposition ahead of the general election scheduled for May 2015. The Ethiopian authorities must ensure the immediate and unconditional release of those arrested for peaceful participation in, or the organization of, the demonstration, and all others imprisoned in Ethiopia for the peaceful expression of their political opinion. Amnesty International is concerned that in the period ahead of next year’s poll such instances of the authorities cracking down on political opposition will intensify. The nine-party coalition was attempting to stage a demonstration in Addis Ababa’s Meskel Square on 6 December as the culmination of a series of activities calling for a free and fair election. The exact number of people arrested has not been established, but the political parties involved report that around 90 people arrested in relation to the demonstration have appeared in court remand hearings in recent days. The Semayawi (Blue) party, one of the coalition members, says that around 75 of its members and leadership were arrested, including its Chair, Engineer Yilkal Getnet, who is reported to have been injured as a result of beating by the police before he was arrested. The leaders of at least three other parties in the coalition were also arrested – Girma Bekele of the Omo People’s Democratic Union and Chair of the coalition, Erchafo Erdelo, Chair of the Kembata Peoples’ Congress and Alesa Mengesha, Chair of the Gedeo People’s Democratic Organization.

This leads to increased demand for accessible urban green spaces (UGSs). Various efforts have been made in order to address these issues. However, despite the Keywords: abundant scientificliterature available on the accessibility of UGSs in many parts of the world, only a few studies Addis Ababa have been conducted in sub-Saharan Africa and particularly in Ethiopia. The aim of this study is to fill this Ethiopia research gap with an empirical investigation of the accessibility of 23 existing public recreational parks (clas Network analysis sifiedhierarchically in City, Sub-city and Woreda Parks) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by using a GIS based network Public recreational parks Sub-Saharan Africa analysis method at the sub-city level. The study is particularly relevant and urgent as the Addis Ababa City Urban green spaces Council is currently planning to establish 2730 ha of new recreational park area until 2027. The results show that the public recreational parks in Addis Ababa are relatively few in numbers, small in size and cover large service areas.

Chanting up Zion: Reggae as Productive Mechanism for Repatriated Rastafari in Ethiopia David Aarons A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2017 Reading Committee: Shannon Dudley, Chair Giulia Bonacci Katell Morand Christina Sunardi Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Music i @Copyright 2017 David Aarons ii University of Washington Abstract Chanting up Zion: Reggae as Productive Mechanism for Repatriated Rastafari in Ethiopia David Aarons Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Shannon Dudley Ethnomusicology Since the 1960s, Rastafari from Jamaica and other countries have been “returning” to Ethiopia in the belief that it is their Promised Land, Zion. Based on extensive ethnographic research in Ethiopia between 2015 and 2017, this project examines the ways in which repatriated Rastafari use music to transform their Promised Land into a reality amidst various challenges. Since they are denied legal citizenship, Rastafari deploy reggae in creative and strategic ways to gain cultural citizenship and recognition in Ethiopia. This research examines how reggae music operates as a productive mechanism, that is, how human actors use music to produce social and tangible phenomena in the world. Combining theories on music’s productive capabilities with Rastafari ideologies on word-sound, this research further seeks to provide deeper insight into the ways Rastafari effect change through performative arts. I examine how Rastafari mobilize particular discourses that both challenge and reproduce hegemonic systems, creating space for themselves in Ethiopia through music. Rastafari use reggae in strategic ways to insert themselves into the contested national narratives of Ethiopia, and participate in the practice of space-making in Addis Ababa and Shashemene through sound projects.
