Cosmic radiation and heavy-ion physics How scientists in Lund determined the properties of the strange K mesons, and then recreated the physical proc- esses taking place a few millionths of a second after the Big Bang. Cosmic radiation and heavy-ion physics 100 101 The discovery of cosmic radiation In 1912, the Austrian Victor Francis Hess ascended to an altitude of 5 000 m in a hot air balloon, where he measured ionizing radiation in the atmosphere. He found that this was three times higher than on the surface of the earth. He had discovered cosmic radiation. So what kind of radiation was this? Charged particles or electromagnetic radiation? As the cosmic radiation is affected by the earth’s magnetic field, it must consist of charged particles. Experiments showed that these particles had a high kinetic energy. A smiling Victor Hess preparing for his ascent in 1912 to measure ionization at high altitudes using two newly develo- ped electrometers. Track detectors The cloud chamber had been developed by C T R Wilson in Cambridge in the 1910s. Ionizing particles travelling through a saturated vapour cause condensa- tion along their path, leading to visible tracks. In the late 1930s, the British physicist Cecil Powell, working in Bristol, developed highly sensitive photo- graphic emulsions for the measurement of high-energy ionizing particles. Cecil Frank Powell (1903 -1969) was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1950 for the development of photographic emulsions for the detection of subatomic particles. He discovered the rays emitted from the uranium salts in pitchblende, called Becquerel rays, which led to the isolation of radium and to the beginning of modern nuclear physics. He shared the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physics with Pierre and Marie Curie for the discovery of radioactivity.1 Early Life Antoine Henri Becquerel was born in Paris, France on December 15, 1852.3 He was born into a family of scientists and scholars. His grandfather, Antoine Cesar Bequerel, invented an electrolytic method for extracting metals from their ores. His father, Alexander Edmond Becquerel, a Professor of Applied Physics, was known for his research on solar radiation and on phosphorescence.2, 3 Becquerel not only inherited their interest in science, but he also inherited the minerals and compounds studied by his father, which gave him a ready source of fluorescent materials in which to pursue his own investigations into the mysterious ways of Wilhelm Roentgen’s newly discovered phenomenon, X-rays.2 Henri received his formal, scientific education at Ecole Polytechnique in 1872 and attended the Ecole des Ponts at Chaussees from 1874-77 for his engineering training. -
