A member of X-Japan in France ! Ra :IN in Paris the 5th of May 2005 Gfdgfd We have the pleasure to announce that the solo band of PATA (ex-X-Japan), Ra :IN, will perform live at the Elysee Montmartre in Paris (France) the 5th of May 2005. " Ra:IN " (pronounced "rah'een")----is an amazing unique, powerful new rock trio consisting of PATA (guitar-Tomoaki Ishizuka), one of the guitarists from the legendary Japanese rock band X Japan, michiaki (bass-Michiaki Suzuki), originally from another legendary Yokohama based rock band TENSAW, and Tetsu Mukaiyama (drums), who supported various bands and musicians such as Red Warriors and CoCCo. " Ra:IN " 's uniqueness comes from its musical eloquence. The three-piece band mainly delves into instrumental works, and the band's combination of colorful tones and sounds, along with the tight playing only possible with top-notch skilled players, provides an overwhelming power and energy that is what " ROCK " is all about. Just cool and heavy rhythms. But above all, don’t miss the first opportunity to see on stage in Europe a member of X-Japan, PATA (one of the last still performing). One of those that with their music, during years, warmed the heart of millions of fans in Japan and across the world. Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. Since 1998, under Korea’s Open- Door Policy, legally available Japanese popular cultural products became widely consumed, especially among young Koreans fascinated by Japan’s quintessentially postmodern popular culture, despite lingering resentments towards Japan.

  • Detecting Japanese Vernacular Modernism: Shinseinen Magazine and the Development of the Tantei Shôsetsu Genre, 1920-1931
DETECTING JAPANESE VERNACULAR MODERNISM: SHINSEINEN MAGAZINE AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TANTEI SHÔSETSU GENRE, 1920-1931 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kyoko Omori * * * * * The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Professor William J. Tyler, Adviser Approved by Professor Richard Torrance Professor Mark Bender Adviser Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures ABSTRACT The post-war discourse on modern Japanese literature has presented the binary opposition between “pure” versus “popular” literature as a historical fact, configuring popular literature as the disposable “other” of “pure” literature. Consequently, Japanese literary studies have paid relatively little attention to popular forms such as mystery fiction, samurai “period” fiction, the romance novel, and “nansensu” humor. This dissertation examines the discursive formation of the Japanese modernist popular genre known as “tantei shôsetsu” or “detective fiction.” Focusing on the popular monthly magazine Shinseinen and several of its writers, it discusses the theoretical and practical dimensions of “tantei shôsetsu” as a vernacular form of modernist literary production. In doing so, it situates the genre within contemporaneous debates about the meaning of both modernity and literature in Japan during the 1920s. Chapter One establishes the theoretical terms for “vernacular modernism” by illuminating the ways in which popular literary production engaged with the forces of commercialism and Westernization that also shaped the development of canonical Japanese literature during the early twentieth century. Chapter Two surveys established critical views of Modernism in Japan and shows that they fail to account for the significance of vernacular expression.

  • Diversity of K-Pop: a Focus on Race, Language, and Musical Genre
DIVERSITY OF K-POP: A FOCUS ON RACE, LANGUAGE, AND MUSICAL GENRE Wonseok Lee A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2018 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2018 Wonseok Lee All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Since the end of the 1990s, Korean popular culture, known as Hallyu, has spread to the world. As the most significant part of Hallyu, Korean popular music, K-pop, captivates global audiences. From a typical K-pop artist, Psy, to a recent sensation of global popular music, BTS, K-pop enthusiasts all around the world prove that K-pop is an ongoing global cultural flow. Despite the fact that the term K-pop explicitly indicates a certain ethnicity and language, as K- pop expanded and became influential to the world, it developed distinct features that did not exist in it before. This thesis examines these distinct features of K-pop focusing on race, language, and musical genre: it reveals how K-pop groups today consist of non-Korean musicians, what makes K-pop groups consisting of all Korean musicians sing in non-Korean languages, what kind of diverse musical genres exists in the K-pop field with two case studies, and what these features mean in terms of the discourse of K-pop today. By looking at the diversity of K-pop, I emphasize that K-pop is not merely a dance- oriented musical genre sung by Koreans in the Korean language.

  • The “Pop Pacific” Japanese-American Sojourners and the Development of Japanese Popular Music
The “Pop Pacific” Japanese-American Sojourners and the Development of Japanese Popular Music By Jayson Makoto Chun The year 2013 proved a record-setting year in Japanese popular music. The male idol group Arashi occupied the spot for the top-selling album for the fourth year in a row, matching the record set by female singer Utada Hikaru. Arashi, managed by Johnny & Associates, a talent management agency specializing in male idol groups, also occupied the top spot for artist total sales while seven of the top twenty-five singles (and twenty of the top fifty) that year also came from Johnny & Associates groups (Oricon 2013b).1 With Japan as the world’s second largest music market at US$3.01 billion in sales in 2013, trailing only the United States (RIAJ 2014), this talent management agency has been one of the most profitable in the world. Across several decades, Johnny Hiromu Kitagawa (born 1931), the brains behind this agency, produced more than 232 chart-topping singles from forty acts and 8,419 concerts (between 2010 and 2012), the most by any individual in history, according to Guinness World Records, which presented two awards to Kitagawa in 2010 (Schwartz 2013), and a third award for the most number-one acts (thirty-five) produced by an individual (Guinness World Record News 2012). Beginning with the debut album of his first group, Johnnys in 1964, Kitagawa has presided over a hit-making factory. One should also look at R&B (Rhythm and Blues) singer Utada Hikaru (born 1983), whose record of four number one albums of the year Arashi matched.
