This document serves as a data dictionary for the existing vegetation, historical vegetation, and potential natural vegetation databases, as described below: • Interpretation of aerial photography acquired in 1995, 1996, and 1997 was used to characterize existing (current) conditions. The 1996 and 1997 photography was obtained after cessation of the Bull and Summit wildfires in order to characterize post-fire conditions. The database name is: 97veg. • Interpretation of late-1930s and early-1940s photography was used to characterize historical conditions. The database name is: 39veg. • The potential natural vegetation was determined for each polygon in the analysis -

The summer of 2012 was long, hot and brutal, with drought afflicting most of the U.S. Most of my botanical explorations were restricted to Idaho, Wash- ington, Oregon and northern California but even there moisture was below average. In a year like this, seeps, swales, springs, vestigial snowbanks and localized rainstorms became much more important in my search for seeding plants. On the Snake River Plains of southern Idaho and the scab- lands of eastern Washington, early bloomers such as Viola beckwithii, V. trinervata, Ranunculus glaberrimus, Ranunculus andersonii, Fritillaria pudica and Primula cusickiana put on quite a show in mid-April but many populations could not set seed. In northern Idaho, Erythronium idahoense flowered extensively, whole meadows were covered with thousands of the creamy, pendant blossoms. One of my most satisfying finds in the Hells Canyon area had to be Sedum valens. The tiny glaucous rosettes, surround- ed by a ring of red leaves, are a succulent connoisseur’s dream. Higher up, the brilliant blue spikes of Synthyris missurica punctuated the canyon walls. In southern Oregon, the brilliant red spikes of Pedicularis densiflora lit up the Siskiyou forest floor. Further north in Oregon, large populations of Erythronium elegans, Erythronium oregonum ssp. leucandrum, Erythro- nium revolutum, trilliums and sedums provided wonderful picture-taking opportunities. Eriogonum species did well despite the drought, many of them true xerics. -

Box 25 Boise, Idaho 83707 Rodney Sando, Director Prepared for: Idaho Field Office, The Nature Conservancy Contract No. IDFO - 052898 - TK * Project leader and principal contact. ii ABSTRACT The Owyhee Plateau region of southwestern Idaho is recognized by many for its ecological significance. In 1996 The Nature Conservancy purchased the 45 Ranch located on the Owyhee Plateau. In 1998 and 1999 an ecological inventory of the conservation site was conducted to prepare a baseline vegetation map of terrestrial plant associations, provide documentation of the composition and structure of major plant associations and condition classes, compile a comprehensive plant species list for the study area, and document the distribution of rare plant species. The report provides an integrated summary of the biological diversity of terrestrial habitats. A vegetation map of the 65,000-acre site was created using Landsat imagery and modeled distribution patterns. The distribution, relative abundance, composition, and structure of 37 plant associations is described. Twelve plant associations were not previously described. The distribution and abundance of 463 common and 19 rare vascular plant species is summarized. Lists of reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and birds observed on the conservation site are provided. The vegetation on 45 Ranch is primarily mid- to late-seral and in good to excellent condition. The ranch encompasses some of the highest quality, representative stands known on the Owyhee Plateau. The effects of resource-based land use practices and chronic disturbances, such as exotic species invasion, and their cumulative effects, however, are apparent. -

Reference sites are ecological controls that can be used to set meaningful management and regulatory goals. Since 1984, the Idaho Conservation Data Center, Boise, ID, has compiled information in a series of interrelated databases on the distribution and condition of riparian, wetland, and terrestrial plant associations in high quality reference sites in Idaho. This report summarizes association-specific and reference area-specific information from our databases and presents a standardized classification of Idaho riparian and wetland plant associations. Each plant association entry includes the current global and state conservation rank, and the plant association's occurrence in reference areas (if any). This is followed by a summary of each -

Checklist of Montana Vascular Plants June 1, 2011 By Scott Mincemoyer Montana Natural Heritage Program Helena, MT This checklist of Montana vascular plants is organized by Division, Class and Family. Species are listed alphabetically within this hierarchy. Synonyms, if any, are listed below each species and are slightly indented from the main species list. The list is generally composed of species which have been documented in the state and are vouchered by a specimen collection deposited at a recognized herbaria. Additionally, some species are included on the list based on their presence in the state being reported in published and unpublished botanical literature or through data submitted to MTNHP. The checklist is made possible by the contributions of numerous botanists, natural resource professionals and plant enthusiasts throughout Montana’s history. Recent work by Peter Lesica on a revised Flora of Montana (Lesica 2011) has been invaluable for compiling this checklist as has Lavin and Seibert’s “Grasses of Montana” (2011). Additionally, published volumes of the Flora of North America (FNA 1993+) have also proved very beneficial during this process. The taxonomy and nomenclature used in this checklist relies heavily on these previously mentioned resources, but does not strictly follow anyone of them. The Checklist of Montana Vascular Plants can be viewed or downloaded from the Montana Natural Heritage Program’s website at: http://mtnhp.org/plants/default.asp This publication will be updated periodically with more frequent revisions anticipated initially due to the need for further review of the taxonomy and nomenclature of particular taxonomic groups (e.g. Arabis s.l ., Crataegus , Physaria ) and the need to clarify the presence or absence in the state of some species. -

Classification studies which have occurred within the region include Mueggler and Harris (1969) and Roberts (1971). A number of other vegetation and community classification studies are potentially applicable to shrubland and grassland vegetation within the mountains of central Idaho (e.g., Hironaka et al. 1983; Tisdale 1986; Johnson and Simon 1987; Rust et al. 2000). These studies, however, are limited in terms of their geographic relevance. The similarity of shrub-steppe and grassland vegetation, for example, of the Snake River Plain or Hells Canyon to the mountains of central Idaho has not been investigated. -
