TV Channel Distribution in Europe: Table of Contents This report covers 238 international channels/networks across 152 major operators in 34 EMEA countries. From the total, 67 channels (28%) transmit in high definition (HD). The report shows the reader which international channels are carried by which operator – and which tier or package the channel appears on. The report allows for easy comparison between operators, revealing the gaps and showing the different tiers on different operators that a channel appears on. Press Release Potsdam Declaration
Press Release Potsdam 19.10.2018 Potsdam Declaration signed by 21 public broadcasters from Europe “In times such as ours, with increased polarization, populism and fixed positions, public broadcasters have a vital role to play across Europe.” A joint statement, emphasizing the inclusive rather than divisive mission of public broadcasting, will be signed on Friday 19th October 2018 in Potsdam. Cilla Benkö, Director General of Sveriges Radio and President of PRIX EUROPA, and representatives from 20 other European broadcasters are making their appeal: “The time to stand up for media freedom and strong public service media is now. Our countries need good quality journalism and the audiences need strong collective platforms”. The act of signing is taking place just before the Awards Ceremony of this year’s PRIX EUROPA, hosted by rbb in Berlin and Potsdam from 13-19 October under the slogan “Reflecting all voices”. The joint declaration was initiated by the Steering Committee of PRIX EUROPA, which unites the 21 broadcasters. Licence Fee for Citizens Simple and modern We have long been able to watch television programmes on a tablet and listen to radio on a smart phone. Technical equipment offers an increasing number of functions and changes in the way we use media content. Device-independent licence fees are modern and open to technological progress. For €17.50* per month the licence fee covers all public service broadcasting programmes over all means of distributions. It also ensures that there will be a varied and freely avialable programme for all citizens in the future. Public service broadcasting Independence Public service broadcasting in Germany is an essential part of a modern, democratic society: its programmes play a considerable part in forming of opinion. This solidarity-based funding through the licence fee ensures that everyone has free access to information and enables reporting independent from economic and political interests. Quality ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio offer high-quality-services that inform, educate and entertain: news programmes provide up-to-date and comprehensive information, whilst TV magazines and political talk shows provide background and analyses. Public service broadcasting also represents a unique range of entertainment, such as films, radio plays, TV series, sport and shows. Quality and ratings are not a contradiction, quite the opposite as several media awards show. Variety The programmes on TV, radio and the Internet are as wide-ranging as the interests of those who use them - a large part of the programmes are therefore barrier-free. Public service broadcasting also offers more than just the main channels: such as on ARD’s regional channels, 3sat, ARTE and PHOENIX, and KI.KA as well as on the additional digital channels. -

Global pay TV fragments The top 503 pay TV operators will reach 853 million subscribers from the 1.02 billion global total by 2026. The top 50 operators accounted for 64% of the world’s pay TV subscribers by end-2020, with this proportion dropping to 62% by 2026. However, operators beyond the top 100 will gain subscribers over the same period. Simon Murray, Principal Analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “Most industries consolidate as they mature. The pay TV sector is doing the opposite – fragmenting. Most of the subscriber growth will take place in developing countries where operators are not controlled by larger corporations.” By end-2020, 13 operators had more than 10 million pay TV subscribers. China and India will continue to dominate the top pay TV operator rankings, partly as their subscriber bases climb but also due to the US operators losing subscribers. Between 2020 and 2026, 307 of the 503 operators (61%) will gain subscribers, with 13 showing no change and 183 losing subscribers (36%). In 2020, 28 pay TV operators earned more than $1 billion in revenues, but this will drop to 24 operators by 2026. The Global Pay TV Operator Forecasts report covers 503 operators with 726 platforms [132 digital cable, 116 analog cable, 279 satellite, 142 IPTV and 57 DTT] across 135 countries. -

Die Rundfunkwirtschaft im Überblick I 1 Struktur der Fernseh- und Hörfunk- angebote in Deutschland Zum zehnten Mal liegt die Studie zur wirtschaftlichen Lage des Rundfunks in Deutsch- land vor. Die Mitte 2013 unter allen deutschen privaten Fernseh- und Hörfunkanbietern durchgeführte Erhebung wurde im Auftrag von zehn Landesmedienanstalten durchge- führt. Beteiligt waren die Landesanstalt für Kommunikation Baden-Württemberg (LFK), die Bayerische Landeszentrale für neue Medien (BLM), die Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb), die Medienanstalt Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein (MA HSH), die Hessische Landes- anstalt für privaten Rundfunk und neue Medien (LPR Hessen), die Niedersächsische Lan- desmedienanstalt (NLM), die Landesanstalt für Medien Nordrhein-Westfalen (LfM), die Landeszentrale für Medien und Kommunikation Rheinland-Pfalz (LMK), die Sächsische Landesanstalt für privaten Rundfunk und neue Medien (SLM) und die Thüringer Landes- medienanstalt (TLM). Die aktuelle Studie baut auf die Vorjahresstudien auf und basiert wie diese in erster Linie auf einer Primärdatenerhebung mittels Fragebogen unter allen Rundfunkanbietern in Deutschland. Darüber hinaus wird sie um eine Sekundäranalyse der öff entlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkstrukturen ergänzt. Dabei fl ossen Daten der ARD-Fi- nanz- und Werbestatistiken, der ZDF-Jahrbücher und des ZDF-Haushaltsplans sowie An- gaben der Kommission zur Ermittlung des Finanzbedarfs (KEF) in den Bericht mit ein. Die Langzeitstudie zur wirtschaftlichen Lage des Rundfunks wurde in der Vergangenheit von unterschiedlichen Landesmedienanstalten unterstützt. In den Jahren 1996–2004 sowie bei der Vorgängerstudie im Jahr 2011 handelte es sich um ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt al- ler Landesmedienanstalten. In der Zeit zwischen 2005 und 2008 waren lediglich acht der vierzehn Landesmedienanstalten an der Studienerstellung beteiligt.¹ Der vorliegende Bericht liefert ein umfassendes Gesamtbild der Entwicklung der deut- schen Rundfunkwirtschaft und schreibt die Studienreihe der Landesmedienanstalten fort. -
