VOL. 4 NO. 3 FEATURES: CARL PALMER As a youngster, Carl Palmer exhibited tremendous drumming ability to audiences in his native England. Years later, he ex- hibited his ability to audiences world wide as one third of the legendary Emerson, Lake and Palmer. With the breakup of E.L.P., Palmer has expanded in new directions with the forma- tion of his own band, P.M. 12 BILL GOODWIN Bill Goodwin has played with a variety of musicians over the years, including Art Pepper, George Shearing, Mose Allison and currently with Phil Woods. Goodwin discusses the styles and demands of the various musicians he worked with. And though Goodwin is a renowned sideman, he is determined to branch out with some solo projects of his own. 22 DEREK PELLICCI Derek Pellicci of the successful Little River Band, speaks candidly about his responsibilities with the band versus his other love, session work. From the Archives As PAS celebrates its 50th anniversary, here’s a look back at some of the ads that appeared in Percussive Notes during the 1960s and ’70s. The Drums Unlimited Percussion Publications catalog was the definitive reference source for percussion solos, ensembles and method books in the 1970s and ’80s. See-through drumsets were big in the early to mid-1970s, but see-through marching drums never quite caught on. One of the first ads to ever appear in Percus- sive Notes in 1968 was a four-page spread introducing Rogers Accu-sonic timpani. MODERN DRUMMER VOL. 4 NO. 4 FEATURES: KEITH KNUDSEN and CHET MCCRACKEN Keith Knudsen and Chet McCracken, drummers for the pop- ular Doobie Brothers, relate how the advantages outweigh the difficulties working in a two drummer situation. The pair also evaluate their own performance styles and preferences within the musical context of the band. 12 JOE COCUZZO Having worked professionally since the age of 19, Joe Co- cuzzo has an abundance of musical knowledge. His respect for and understanding of the drummer's position within the music has prepared him for affiliations with Buddy DeFranco, Gary McFarland, Don Ellis, Woody Herman and Tony Bennett. 20 ED GREENE Ed Greene has the distinction of being one of Los Angeles' hottest studio drummers. Greene explains what it's like to work in the studios while trying to keep your personal musical goals alive, and what the responsibilities of a studio musician entail. • The Vocalization of the Drum Kit
The vocalization of the drum kit An evolutive approach to a dynamic drumming style driven by sound phrases and evolving gestures Christophe Fellay Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Contemporary Music Practice College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences Brunel University London 2020 Declaration I hereby declare that the thesis is based on my original work, except for quotations and citations which have been duly acknowledged. I also declare that it has not been previously or concurrently submitted for any other degree at Brunel University or other institutions. Name: Christophe Fellay Date: London 12/ 08 / 2020 Signature: 2 Abstract This thesis critically analyses a personal approach to the drum kit, from its sonic properties, the evolving language that emerged from studio and performance practice, and its application to a dynamic drumming driven by sound phrases and gestures. The research process is investigated from three perspectives: the study of the evolution of drumming and sound practices; the exploration and observation of the ‘écriture corporelle’ process through a precise analysis of the results in terms of musical and performance achievements; the careful examination of the integration of evolving gestures within a practice whose goal is the consolidation of a new improvised drumming vocabulary. The study of several studio sessions and live performances includes a detailed analysis of sound qualities and their context of emergence. It proposes a framework for an evolving approach to the drum kit, aiming at the emergence of a new drumming vocabulary. The thesis offers a creative approach to drumming through an engagement with sonic structures and developmental processes. It proposes a detailed examination of the move from a drumkit-playing mode originating from ‘rudiments’ and traditional rhythms towards sound- oriented drumming.

Driessen, Co-Supervisor (Department of Electrical Engineering and Music) Dr. W. Andrew Schloss, Co-Supervisor (Department of Music and Computer Science) Dr. Steve Gibson, Outside Member (Department of Visual Arts) iii Abstract The goal of this project is to create a new instrument: the E-Drumset. This new interface addresses the lack of expressivity in current electronic percussion devices. The project combines Electrical Engineering for implementing hardware and digital signal processing, Computer Science for implementing musical and mapping soft- ware, and Music to devise new playing techniques and ways to combine them into a pedagogy and language of transmission. Like an acoustic drumset, the E-Drumset consists of different components that can be arranged together as a whole. An acoustic drumset can be thought of as a collection of pedals, drums and cymbals. The E-Drumset consists of the E-Pedal, E-Drum and E-Cymbal.

VOL. 5 NO. 7 Cover Photo by Veryl Oakland CONTENTS FEATURES: SHELLY MANNE After making a name for himself in the Stan Kenton band, Shelly Manne went on to become a major figure in the West Coast Style of jazz. As a studio player he is known for his ability to play a wide variety of styles. In this exclusive MD interview, Shelly discusses his background, his varied experi- ences, and his melodic approach to playing drums. 10 TOMMY ALDRIDGE As a result of being forced to stay in a band that he did not want to play with, Tommy Aldridge has learned the importance of dealing with the legal aspects of music as well as the creative aspects. He shares this knowledge with MD readers while discussing everything from his first drums to his current activi- ties. 14 JIM CHAPIN Although best known for his book, Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer, Jim Chapin has actually spent most of his time as a performer, rather than as a teacher. During his long career he has been involved with many different areas of music. He speaks of his experiences, and how he came to write what is often referred to as THE jazz drum book. 25 INSIDE: MILESTONE PERCUSSION 18 SHOP HOPPIN': CHARLEY DONNELLY'S A TRIBUTE TO BILLY GLADSTONE 20 DRUM CENTRE 32 NAZARETH'S DARRELL SWEET 28 COLUMNS: EDITOR'S OVERVIEW 2 PORTRAITS Reggie Smith ASK A PRO 4 by Dave Levine 68 READER'S PLATFORM 6 ROCK 'N' JAZZ CLINIC Ambidexterity—Part 1 IT'S QUESTIONABLE by Roberto Petaccia 72 by Cheech Iero 34 PRINTED PAGE 76 TEACHER'S FORUM Joel Rothman in London SHOP TALK Soundproofing the Practice Room by Bill Moody 36 by Steven J.

Special thanks are due to my wife, Elizabeth Hammond, who proofread this manuscript several times. This book is for Jane, a musician of the future who will only have to be able to ‘hear’ to play. 3 Introduction This book is about the future of music. It assumes that the reader knows something about music but little about computers. With the aid of computers, music has taken a sudden evolutionary jump and many musicians have stumbled at the fence. For some adults, computers and the high-tech jargon that surrounds them, represent one of the least attractive aspects of life in the late twentieth century. Artists especially are dismissive of such coldly calculating objects, preferring to place their belief in human inspiration and instinctive creativity.
