Architecture Click here for a fuller account of Elizabeth. One of the principle events of the reign of Elizabeth was the defeat of the Spanish Armada (here's the BBC Armada site). Elizabeth's famous (and short) speech before the battle can be found here. England's power grew mightily in this period, which is reflected in the lives and achievements of contemporary 'heroes' such as Sir Francis Drake, fearless fighter against the Spanish who circumnavigated the globe, and Sir Walter Raleigh (nowadays pronounced Rawley), one of those who established the first British colonies across the Atlantic (and who spelt his name in over 40 different ways...). Raleigh is generally 'credited' with the commercial introduction of tobacco into England .about 1778, and possibly of the potato. On a lighter note, information on Elizabethan costume is available here (including such items as farthingales and bumrolls). Literature Drama and the theatre The Elizabethan age is the golden age of English drama, for which the establishment of permanent theatres is not least responsible. As performances left the inn-yards and noble houses for permanent sites in London, the demand for drama increased enormously. While some of the smaller theatres were indoors, it is the purpose-built round/square/polygonal buildings such as The Theatre (the first, built in 1576), the Curtain (late 1570s?), the Rose (1587), the Swan (1595), the Fortune (1600) and of course the Globe (1599) that are most characteristic of the period. -

In a two-part study, the investigation first traces the history of the apostrophe from its origins to the prescriptive rules that govern its use today, before exploring the factors that influence modern attitudes and practices, as well as implications for the future. Part I involves an examination of the relevant literature and original manuscripts and texts to trace the history of the apostrophe from a 2,000 year old Greek papyrus, through French and into English in the sixteenth century, showing that it did not come via Latin as dictionary etymologies suggest. -

Considering the business needs of both Japanese companies and developing countries, JETRO combines various business tools, including the dispatch of experts, the acceptance of trainees, supporting presentations at exhibitions and development and import demonstration projects, all in an organized fashion with a view to supporting the establishment of business relations between Japanese and local companies. Performances for last few years Some of the examples of projects based on needs in developing countries include assistance of exporting products such as cut flowers from East African countries, coffee from Zambia, tea from Malawi and various natural products (oils, herbal teas and spices) to Japan. Bright-colored flowers, high-quality Zambian coffee, mellow flavored Malawian tea that goes perfectly with milk are beginning to permeate the Japanese market, and are expected to further increase in sales in Japan in the future. -

167 Northumbrian Rounded Vowels in the Old English Gloss to the Lindisfarne Gospels Johanna Wood Aarhus University Abstract This paper1 investigates the distribution of mid-front rounded vowels in the Northumbrian glosses to the Lindisfarne gospels. Rounding after /w/ is a dialect feature of late Old Northumbrian. Numerical counts for the distribution of the feature are merged with new data. The goal is to see whether the data support already hypothesized demarcations in the text. The main fi nding is that the gospel of Luke and the second half of Mark have the most frequent occurrences of this feature and therefore are the most conservative sections of the glosses. 1. Introduction The debate regarding the authorship of the Old English Gloss to the Lindisfarne Gospels has maintained a continued presence in academic literature for at least 150 years. This paper contributes to that debate by further investigating the distribution of mid-front rounded vowels throughout the four gospels. The Lindisfarne bible in Latin was written at Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island and ascribed to the monk Eadfrith, who was Bishop of Lindisfarne between 698 and 721.
