The challenge facing a biathlete is being able to shoot accurately after an enduring ski workout. The U.S. continues to improve in biathlon but this sport belongs to the European countries like Sweden, Norway, France, Germany and Finland. Norway’s Ole Einar Bjørndalen has won more medals than any Winter Olympian, period. The sport is exactly what its name implies and that is a combination of cross county, or Nordic skiing, and ski jumping. Norway has dominated this sports since the early days, including sweeping the medals in the first four Winter Olympics, and continues to have success. At Sochi in 2014 Germany’s Eric Frenzel won gold. For Team USA, Bryan Fletcher’s heartwarming story of going from childhood cancer survivor to Olympian is one for the ages. This will be his second trip to the Olympics as Fletcher was also in Sochi in 2014. Women’s events began in 1952. At Sochi in 2014 the Scandinavian countries — Norway, Sweden and Finland — cleaned up with Norway winning 11 medals, including five gold medals. The U.S. women’s team could pull a few surprises. Jessie Diggins won a silver medal and Kikkan Randall won bronze at the 2017 Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, Finland, a first for Team USA.
