    Germany Gains Right To Host Bobsleigh And Skeleton World Championships The world governing body of bobsleigh and skeleton has announced Germany©s Konigsee has been selected as the last-minute replacement for Sochi. Konigsee has hosted the World Championships on four previous occasions, most recently in 2011. In a statement on its website, the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) remarked the track was available during the period of two weeks for which the championships had already been scheduled. It added local officials had the required operational and logistical expertise to successfully organize the event at such short notice. The IBSF further added that holding the events at Konigsee would minimize the travel and financial impact on the teams. The IBSF decided to withdraw the 2017 World Championships from Sochi after evidence of systematic, state-sponsored doping emerged in a second World Anti-Doping Agency- commissioned report by Canadian sports lawyer Richard McLaren. Announcing the decision to strip Sochi, the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation said it was prudent not to organize such an event in Russia. Latvia was the first country to boycott the World Championships in Sochi. The IBSF was urged by high-profile American bobsledder Lolo Jones to move its flagship event. Lolo had remarked she wanted to compete in a competition that was "drug free and safe." Kyle Tress, an American skeleton racer, had previously remarked memos calling for a boycott of the bobsled and skeleton championships in Sochi have been circulated. Kyle said there is tremendous support to skip this event, and he thinks it is the right decision.

A total of 35 bobsleigh teams and 52 skeleton athletes from 23 nations are registered to compete at the World Cup season opener in Lake Placid. The current Bobsleigh Olympic Champions, World Champions and defending World Cup title holders, Mariama Jamanka (GER, 2-woman Bobsleigh) and Francesco Friedrich (GER, 2-man and 4-man Bobsleigh), will both be travelling to Lake Placid. Olympic Champion Jamanka won her first ever overall World Cup and World Championship titles last winter. Friedrich became the first ever bobsleigh athlete to win all of the season's eight races in the 2-man Bobsleigh. Two fresh new faces will also be contributing to the German bobsleigh team’s efforts at the BMW IBSF World Cup: The current U23 World Champion Kim Kalicki will compete in her first World Cup races in Lake Placid. Laura Nolte, the 2016 Youth Olympic Champion, will then make her début in January for the race on her home track in Winterberg. One familiar face returning to the World Cup will be bobsleigh pilot Kaillie Humphries, who missed last season. The 34-year-old athlete, who won Olympic gold for Canada in 2010 and 2014 and also won two World Championship titles and four overall World Cups, has been competing for the USA since the start of the season.

    PRESS-RELEASE - Preview for BMW IBSF World Cup in Calgary / CAN 20 Feb. 2019 Königssee skeleton World Cup will be held at the final in Calgary World Cup final on Saturday and Sunday - Nikitina and Tretiakov lead Calgary (RWH) The final of the BMW IBSF World Cup 2018/2019 in Calgary (CAN, 22 - 24 February) will also host the skeleton races that had to be cancelled in Königssee (GER) due to bad weather. The World Cup weekend in the Canada Olympic Park will therefore kick off on Friday (22 February). The postponed races in women's skeleton and men's skeleton are scheduled to take place from 2.30pm (CET 10.30pm) onwards, local time. All athletes who were registered for the original World Cup in Königssee are entitled to compete. The final World Cup points of the post-Olympic winter in skeleton will then be decided on Saturday for the women (9am local time/ 4pm CET) and Sunday for the men (8.30am / 4.30pm). Upon completion of the races, the overall winners of the BMW IBSF World Cup 2018/2019 shall be awarded the coveted Crystal Globe trophies. Russia's Elena Nikitina will head to the final World Cup of the winter at the top of the women's skeleton World Cup table. The Sochi Olympics bronze medallist currently has a 43 point lead over World Cup title defender, Jacqueline Lölling from Germany. World Cup events in Lake Placid saw the two athletes finish with the same time. However, neither of them has a great deal of experience in Calgary: With her only World Cup start there in 2013, Nikitina took second place, while Lölling came in fourth and fifth at the 2012 Intercontinental Cup.
