Talkin' Hardball featuring John Smoltz set for March 6th The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Global Sport Leadership Doctoral program announced Tuesday that they will partner to host Talkin’ Hardball on March 6th at the Johnson City Country Club.

2015 National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee and Atlanta Braves pitching great John Smoltz will be the featured speaker at the event, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. for a social hour/dinner, followed by the program beginning at 7:30. Smoltz will also host a free youth baseball clinic sponsored by Ballad Health at Thomas Stadium from 5 to 6 p.m. that same day.

Tickets for the event may be purchased by visiting the ticket link at ETSUBucs.com or by calling 423-439-3878. Three levels of tickets will be available, with general admission seats for $50 each, admission and “Extra Innings” post-event gathering access for $125, and sponsored tables for eight, including a pre-event reception for $2,000. The dinner will feature ballpark fare and unlimited beer. ETSU head coach Joe Pennucci said it will be exciting for the entire community to hear from a baseball legend like Smoltz.

Seven athletes who recently trained at the Olympic Training Site at East Tennessee State University are competing in the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Chris Mazdzer from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, is the veteran of the team, having competed both at the Olympic Winter Games in in 2010 and again in in 2014, finishing 13th both times. The seven-time national champion, who also has 10 career individual world cup medals, is ranked No. 22 in the world cup standings.

He won a silver medal, the first-ever medal for the USA in Men’s Singles . He also competed in the luge team relay event, the team finished fourth.

Chris Kinney, a graduate student at ETSU, will make his Olympic debut in the Men’s 4-man Bobsled pushing for USA 2.

Hakeem Abdul-Saboor will also make his Olympic debut, pushing in 4-man for USA 2 and 2-man Bobsled events.

Steve Langton has the most global medals on the U.S. bobsled team, having won bronze in both two- and four-man in Sochi, as well as four world championship medals – including two golds. His first season with the U.S. Bobsled team was 2015-16. He will be pushing in the 4-man Bobsled for USA 1.

John Daly finished 16th in the men’s skeleton. He returned to the Olympics after a heartbreaking performance in Sochi, when his sled popped out of the groove at the start of the fourth and final race. Sitting in fourth place entering that run and jockeying for a medal, Daly finished 15th. Lachlan Reidy is an Australian rugby player turned bobsledder. He will make his Olympic debut as brakeman in the men’s 4-man Bobsled for the PyeongChang 2018 .

Seun Adigun is a Nigerian-American track and field athlete who specialized in the 100 meter hurdles. She competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics, but did not qualify. In 2016, she founded the Nigeria Bobsled team and will drive in the Women’s 2-woman Bobsled.

The Bucs open spring practice on Tuesday, March 13, while having it culminate with the Ballad Health Spring Game on Thursday, April 5 at William B. Greene, Jr. Stadium. Along with the Ballad Health Spring Game, the Blue and Gold will also hold scrimmages on March 24 and 31.

Click here to visit the ETSU Football website. Tarter named College Sports Madness SoCon Player of the Week Senior Tianna Tarter (Johnson City, Tenn.) was named the College Sports Madness Player of the Week for the SoCon, for her outstanding performance against UTC.

This is Tarter’s second College Sports Madness recognition, with the last being on Nov. 20.

The Bucs only had one game this past week against conference rival UTC. ETSU picked up its first regular season sweep since 1997-98 with a 61-55 win. The Johnson City native recorded her fourth double-double of the season after finishing with 27 points and 10 rebounds. She also had five assists and three steals

ETSU basketball fans can prepare to visit “A Galaxy Far, Far Away …” on Friday night, Feb. 23rd, as the Buccaneers will host a special “Star Wars Night” inside Freedom Hall.

On the same night the men’s basketball team takes on Wofford in Southern Conference play, members of the Star Wars fan clubs, the 501st Legion and the Rebel Legion, will be on hand in their movie replica costumes – including a fully-functional R2-D2 – to interact and take pictures with ETSU fans along the concourse inside Freedom Hall. In addition, Star Wars movie clips, music and other special surprises will take place throughout the evening.

ETSU fans are also encouraged to wear their favorite Star Wars costumes and participate in a special costume contest at halftime of the game. In addition, commemorative ETSU and Star Wars-themed merchandise will be part of a pregame silent auction to benefit the Niswonger Children’s Hospital.

Star Wars night is just one part of a special Fan Appreciation Day scheduled for Feb. 23, as the first 1,000 fans will also receive a Steve Forbes collectible Bobblehead sponsored by Johnson City Honda. In addition, the first 225 students in attendance will receive a long sleeve, dry fit T-shirt, and a special post-game autograph session will include both members of the men’s basketball team and Star Wars characters. Posters for the autograph session are sponsored by Food City.

50-year Anniversary of 1967-68 “Sweet 16” Team – Members of the 1967-68 ETSU men’s basketball team were in attendance on Saturday, Feb. 3 to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of their landmark season. The first ETSU team to advance to the NCAA Tournament, the squad ultimately became the only Bucs’ team to ever reach the Sweet 16 with a win over Florida State. The team was recognized during the game against UTC.
