It has been my pleasure to Dave Cantor work with them. A special thanks to David Cherry, Bob Assistants: Eggleton, Paul Chadwick, and Jack Williamson, who Mike DiGenio, Mark Olson, GregThokar agreed on very short notice to do essays on our guests. Staff: Also, a very special blessing on George Flynn, who Shirley Avery, Margret Collins, swore up and down that he wouldn't get stuck doing the Joni Brill Dashoff, Martin Deutsch, guest of honor bibliography this year, and then placed it Charles King. Bill Lehrman, Dave LeVine, in my lap well before the deadline. And, of course, to Bill Powers, $haron Sbarsky, Joe Siclari, Barclay Shaw for his outstanding cover and interior art. Wil! Strang, James Turner I hope we can do it justice. INTERNAL Thanks to Xerox Artificial Intelligence Systems, and the Xerox Corporation in general, for the use of Den: Mike DiGenio typesetting and reprographic equipment. Ribbons: Susan Hammond Calligraphy; My first Boskone was fourteen years ago (several Carol Hammond committee members have been going to SF cons even Roving Repairs: Monty Wells longer) and about a tenth the size we expect this one to Services: Jim Mann, Jane Wagner be. The growth has been interesting to watch, from a Staff: ceonvention using only the small function rooms (this Carl Brandon, Seth Breidbart, Andy Cowan, year’s con suite was for two years our main program Gary Feldbaum, Peter Grace, Bill Jensen, room) and sharing the hotel with an assortment of Joanne Lawlor, Beth MacLellan, Joe Rico, mundanes (in 1975 the hotel’s major tenant our John Sapienza, Andi Shechter weekend was a convention of high-school football Signs: Michael Bergman coaches) to one which some misguided souls now call Assistant: "the winter Worldcon". t YE OLDE COLOPHON FILE 770 is edited by Mike Glyer, at 5828 Woodman Ave. #2, Van Nuys CA 91401. This newzine serving science fiction fandom is published less often than Charlie Brown recommends, and more often than Andrew Porter can keep count (see item else where this issue), but to be more specific, shows up about every six weeks. While F77O can be obtained for hot news, sizzling rumors (printable or not), arranged trades with clubzines and newzines, and expensive Inng-distance phone calls (not collect), subscriptions are most highly prized. Rates: 5/$3 (US) will get your issues sent first-class in North America, and printed matter overseas. $1 per issue covers air printed matter mailing overseas. Direct those expensive, long-distance calls to (213) 787-5061. I’m never home Tuesday nights, so don’t kill yourselves trying to reach me then. I do have a message machine, if it comes down to that... Want back issues? Send request for info. Thanks for production help last issue to: Anne Hansen, Fran Smith, Dean Bell, Debbie Ledesma.______________________ ______ ROUNDMGS mihe glyer ~ — ORIENTATION FOR NEW READERS : Why is this fanzine titled FILE 770? Late in ‘■"z 1977, when I was nerving up to start a fannish newzine to succeed KARASS, I found it difficult to find a title that had not been previously used. I looked through dictionaries, and the Thesaurus. I scanned Bruce Pelz’ voluminous fanzine index. I declined offers to revive titles like FANAC and STARSPINKLE. It became my contention that all the good sf story references usable as newzine titles had been taken.

Took a bit to get into it, what with all the action and the many names and characters, who have many names. Baselius [short story] 1 copy. Explorers in Hell 74 copies. Big Stick. In your mind, you cannot help but take up sword and spear, call out commands or warnings or lamentations and participate as one of the Band in the story itself. While showing a fine flair for the sword-and-sorcery genre, Morris succeeds as well in making her more-than-human characters more than entertaining. Get Creative! Weston Goodreads Author 4. • Tor in Oklahoma All the Experiences That Went Into the Making of the Nation Have Been Speeded Up
Tor in Oklahoma all the experiences that went into the making of the nation have been speeded up. Here all the American traits have been intensified. The one who can interpret Oklahoma can grasp the meaning of America in the modern world." —Angie Debo, Oklahoma: Footloose and Fancy Free, 1949 Every one of these United States touts its unique place in the American Story, but few have as curious a history as Oklahoma. Its place on the continent would have predicted statehood much sooner than 1907, when Oklahoma became the 46th Star. But the federal Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the establishment of an Indian Territory would put the land on a different path, diverging from the logical progression of the white man's Manifest Destiny. csnl^afo /jeu-cr The relocated tribes were promised their new land "as long as the waters run" by U.S. treaty. The tribes would find the promise broken in the latter years of the nineteenth century when Indian Territory saw the breakup of reservations, and then in the early twentieth century when the collective tribes were denied a state of their own. Instead, the territory would join with Oklahoma Territory to form the new state. When areas of the territories were opened for settlement through land runs and lotteries, African Ameri cans came to fulfill the promise of equality, only to see the promise shattered with the establishment of Jim Crow laws. Even the "promised land" promoted during the runs and lotteries would ultimately lead to broken dreams for many Euro-Americans, who would see desperate hardship in the depression, drought, and farm crisis of the 1930s.
