The intersection of Global Outreach with Leadership -Dr. Don Betz, President, Northeastern State University.

Drawing on his international experiences, President Betz will expand on his opening remarks by sharing with students the potential political, economic and philosophical ramifications of our changing world. 'I Chancellor Glen D. Johnson is the chief executive officer for the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education. He reports to the ninemember State Regents for Higher Education and his duties include oversight of academic standards at 4 Oklahoma's colleges and universities, budget allocations, the Oklahoma Guar- anteed Student Loan Program, and numerous scholarship programs. Prior to 1 becoming chancellor, he served as president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University for 10 years, during which time enrollment increased to maximum capacity and aggressive renovations and expansions took place. He earned both his undergraduate and juris doctorate degrees from the University of Oklahoma, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and where he later served as direc- tor of public policy and professor of law. Johnson served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives fromI982 to 1996 and was Speaker of the House from 1990 to 1996. As a legislator, Johnson was an untiring advocate for funding for secondary and higher edu- cation as well as other major initiatives benefitingthe entire state of Oklahoma. Chancellor Johnson was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in November 2006.

Regent Michael C. Turpen, a partner in the law firm of Riggs, Abney, Neal, Turpen, Orbison & Lewis, began serving a nine-year term as a State Regent last year. He earned both his bachelor's and juris doctorate degrees from The Uni- versity of Tulsa. Turpen has served as Muskogee County district attorney and as attorney general for the state of Oklahoma. Continuing his interest in politics, he appears weekly on Oklahoma City NBC affiliate KFOR's award-winning public affairs show, "Flashpoint with Turpen & Humphreys."A nationally sought-after public speaker, Turpen has received numerous awards and honors, such as the National Foundation for the Improvement of Justice Award. In 1992, he was ap- pointed by then-President Bill Clinton to the President's Advisory Council on the nrts at the Kennedy Center. Locally, Turpen serves on the boards of many civic and fine arts organi- zations, including the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, Allied Arts, and the Lyric The- atre, where he successfully chaired a $1 0 million capital campaign in 2006.

w Dr. Don Betz, president of Northeastern State University, Tahlequah, is well- known for his commitment to higher education and to diplomacy through his international activities. In addition to receiving degrees from the University of San Francisco and the University of Denver, Betz has completed Haward University's ' Institute for Educational Management (IEM). He bega.n his academic career at NSU and held such positions as professor of political science, vice president of university relations, and assistant to the president. He also has served as chan- cellor at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, as provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Central Oklahoma, and as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa. For many years Betz has worked with the United Nations on Middle East issues and has demonstrated 1 a passion for promoting cross-cultural understanding. This interest has led him to visit more than 80 countries. 68k has served as a member, or chair, of numerous boards and committees such as Leadership Oklahoma, the DaVinci Institute, the Northeast Oklahoma Public Facility Authority, and the Regional University System of Oklahoma Council of Presidents.

Dr. Raj Basu is vice president for academic affairs for Oklahoma State Universi- ty-fulsa, where he has responsibilities for operations, development, and promo- tion of all academic programs. He received his MBA from Duke University and his Ph.D. from Purdue University. Basu is widely-known for his research and teachingin the areas of leadership, employee performance, team building, and ~hangemanagement. In addition to his responsibilitiesat OSU-Tulsa, he con- sults with organizations in the aerospace, energy, financial services, technology, government, and non-profit sectors. Basu's research has been published in nu- merous professional journals, and he has received several nationally-recognized awards for outstanding teaching in graduate and undergraduate programs. A member or past member of such civic boards as Leadership Oldahoma, Tulsa CARES, the Green- woad Cultural Center and the Oldahoma Aerospace Alliance, Basu finds time to travel, read, run and hike.
