Brewer’s research from 1999 to 2006 on the biogeography and diversity of plant species in the Bladen Nature Reserve. The focus of this report will be on the more recent results of comparisons between the tree flora of the forests on volcanic substrata and those forests on limestone. The objective of this year’s research has been to continue sampling the tree flora on volcanic substrata, and to collect representative plant specimens and photographs for creating reference guides for vegetation research in the Maya Mountains. CONSERVATION IMPLICATIONS and RECOMMENDATIONS The following recommendations are considered by the author as needing the most urgent attention, and they are by no means written to be comprehensive. These recommendations were developed based on the results of this vegetation study and personal observation in the field. They are the result of a primarily science‐based perspective, rather than values or social‐based considerations. (1) Protect high‐elevation forests from fire, local climate change and resource extraction. Buffer zones around protected areas will be essential to protection. The high‐elevation forests – particularly the limestone ridges – are sufficiently rare and unique in Belize as to warrant protection from fires, which may be the greatest threat to these drier systems. -

Box 1787, Belize City, Belize Doyle’s Delight, the highest land area in Belize at 1,124 meters is located at UTM coordinates 1824,500 North and 281,600 East (North American Datum 1927, Zone 16N) on the boundary of the Cayo and Toledo districts (Directorate of Overseas Survey 1980). Field investigations to this area have always resulted in important and exciting findings. The Doyle’s Delight August 2004 expedition proved no exception, as it provided additional insight into the unique role this area plays, both in the biological and physical profile of Belize. In terms of geology the Doyle’s Delight region of the Maya Mountains was part of an volcanic island during the Permian. After uplift of the Maya Mountain fault block in the Triassic and Jurassic, the Maya Mountains subsided in the late Jurassic during the rifting of South America and North America from Africa. From the early Cretaceous to the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary all of Belize, including the Maya Mountains, formed part of the Yucatan carbonate platform where substantial thicknesses of shallow marine carbonate and evaporitic rocks were deposited. What is recognized today as Doyle’s Delight and the Maya Mountains has only been in existence for approximately 60 million years. -

BALICK5,D.H.ATHA5,J.SOLOMON6 &B.K.HOLST7 Covering an area of 177,000 hectares, the region known within Belize as the Chiquibul Forest comprises the country’s largest forest reserve and includes the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, the Chiquibul National Park and the Caracol Archaeological Reserve. Based on 7047 herbarium and live collections, a checklist of 1355 species of vascular plant is presented for this area, of which 87 species are believed to be new records for the country. Of the 41 species of plant known to be endemic to Belize, four have been recorded within the Chiquibul, and 12 species are listed in The World Conservation Union (IUCN) 2006 Red List of Threatened Species. Although the Chiquibul Forest has been relatively well collected, there are geographical biases in botanical sampling which have focused historically primarily on the limestone forests of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. A brief review of the collecting history of the Chiquibul is provided, and recommendations are given on where future collecting efforts may best be focused. The Chiquibul Forest is shown to be a significant regional centre of plant diversity and an important component of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. -
