    1 Chapter Seven Cold Commodities: Discourses of Decay and Purity in a Globalised Jazz World Haftor Medbøe Since gaining prominence in public consciousness as a distinct genre in early 20th Century USA, jazz has become a music of global reach (Atkins, 2003). Coinciding with emerging mass dissemination technologies of the period, jazz spread throughout Europe and beyond via gramophone recordings, radio broadcasts and the Hollywood film industry. America’s involvement in the two World Wars, and the subsequent $13 billion Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe as a unified, and US friendly, trading zone further reinforced the proliferation of the new genre (McGregor, 2016; Paterson et al., 2013). The imposition of US trade and cultural products posed formidable challenges to the European identities, rooted as they were in 18th-Century national romanticism. Commercialised cultural representations of the ‘American dream’ captured the imaginations of Europe’s youth and represented a welcome antidote to post-war austerity. This chapter seeks to problematise the historiography and contemporary representations of jazz in the Nordic region, with particular focus on the production and reception of jazz from Norway. Accepted histories of jazz in Europe point to a period of adulatory imitation of American masters, leading to one of cultural awakening in which jazz was reimagined through a localised lens, and given a ‘national voice’. Evidence of this process of acculturation and reimagining is arguably nowhere more evident than in the canon of what has come to be received as the Nordic tone. In the early 1970s, a group of Norwegian musicians, including saxophonist Jan Garbarek (b.1947), guitarist Terje Rypdal (b.1947), bassist Arild Andersen (b.1945), drummer Jon Christensen (b.1943) and others, abstracted more literal jazz inflected reinterpretations of Scandinavian folk songs by Nordic forebears including pianist Jan Johansson (1931-1968), saxophonist Lars Gullin (1928-1976) bassist Georg Riedel (b.1934) (McEachrane 2014, pp.

Amongst them – Christian Wallumrød’s “No Birch”, “Sofienberg Variations”, “A Year from Easter” and “The Zoo is Far”, Trygve Seim’s “Different Rivers”, “The Source and Different Cikadas” and “Sangam” , Jon Balke’s “Kyanos”, Sinikka Langeland’s “Starflowers”, Frode Haltli’s “Passing Images”, Arild Andersen’s “Elektra” ... albums which between them represent a very broad range of musical possibilities. In each context, however, Henriksen has proven to be both a highly-distinctive and uncommonly adaptive player. This versatility provides a subtext for the present disc, which pools a shifting cast of creative musicians from diverse genres including jazz, electronica, ambient and classical music and the world of the remix. Ex-pop singer David Sylvian makes two appearances reading his own texts, Ana Maria Friman sings fragments of William Brooks’s “Anima Mea” and the voices of the Trio Mediaeval emerge, sampled, on “recording Angel”. Guitarist Eivind Aarset, and drummer Audun Kleive loom out of the mix, and Ståle Storløkken, Arve’s colleague from noise/rock/improv band Supersilent, has a cameo on “Famine’s Ghost”.

Say, wherefore art thou enamoured of misery?” Sophocles, Electra Like so many of the Greek tragedies, Sophocles’ “Electra”, with its themes of endurance of suffering and chains of bloody retribution, remains as pertinent in the 21st century as it was when it was first staged, around 420 B.C. It was with this in mind that Greek theatre director Yannis Margaritis, who counts filmmakers Angelopoulos and Tarkovsky among his major influences, asked Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen for a “very modern” score for his new presentation of the tale of the young woman “whose life is a torrent of woes dread and dark, a torrent that surges through all the months.” For this work with the Spring Theatre group, presented under the auspices of the Cultural Olympiad 2001-2004, Arild Andersen rounded up Norwegian and Greek associates old and new, guiding them through a spacious soundscape, conceived and produced by the bassist at a variety of locations. Andersen, 60 this year, regards “Electra” as a summing up of the directions he has taken in recent years, with an emphasis on structure and arrangement. Greece has been increasingly important in Arild Andersen’s itinerary over the last decade.

    22nd Istanbul Jazz Festival Programme The Festival Hosts Young Jazz Prodigy Tigran Hamasyan in Two Projects Tuesday, 30 June, 21:00, Hagia Eirene Museum Wednesday, 1 July, 19:00, Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall Young musical prodigy Tigran Hamasyan, born in Armenia in 1987, will be at the festival with two special concerts. Hamasyan started the piano when he was three and won the piano competitions of both the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Thelonious Monk Institiute when he was 18, the same age when he released his debut album World Passion. Then in 2011, he won the Victoires de la Musique, which is considered to be the French Grammy’s, with his album A Fable. The Guardian describes him as, “a multi-stylistic jazz virtuoso and a groove-powered hitmaker simultaneously.” Herbie Hancock has already told him, “You are my teacher now!” and Hancock is not alone in his admiration of the young musician, but rather joined by others like Brad Mehldau and Chick Corea. On Tuesday, 30 June, Tigran Hamasyan will render traditional Armenian music at the Hagia Eirene Museum, where he will be joined by the Yerevan State Chamber Music Choir, directed by Harutyun Topikyan, for his chamber choir project Luys i Luso. This project will be performed at a hundred different churches around the world and its album will be released under the title of ECM in September. Hamasyan will meet jazz-lovers a second time the next evening and this time it will be for a lilting and melodic concert with his trio at the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall.

Energien i streken og i en bearbeidet masse skaper beskjeder i omformingen til et verk.» Runi Langum er utdannet ved Kunstakademiet i Trondheim, og ved det prestisjetunge Ècole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts i Paris der hun spesialiserte seg i tegning og fikk 1. prix de dessin i 1986. Hun bor og arbeider på Berger og Fossekleiva. Som grafiker arbeider Runi Langum hovedsakelig med litografiske teknikker. Hennes motivbruk består av mennesker og natur fremstilt med vare, flytende streker satt i kontrast mot ekspressive anslag. Streken er seismografisk. På denne måten skaper hun et figurativt formspråk der motivene blir satt i bevegelse i bildet. Hun har også tegnet på stein. I Elveparken Drammen står to skulpturer med relieff.

He is one of Europe’s leading bass players since the early 1970-ties and is a key figure of the Nordic Jazz Scene. Starting out as a member of Jan Garbarek’s Quartet together with Terje Rypdal and Jon Christensen, he soon played in the local rhythm section in Oslo for visiting American musicians. Andersen worked with Phil Woods, Dexter Gordon, Hampton Hawes, Johnny Griffin, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Don Cherry, Paul Bley, George Russell, Sam Rivers, Chick Corea, John Abercrombie, Pat Metheney or John Scofield. He has recorded 21 albums in his own name for ECM-Records. Bill Frisell, Ralph Towner, Nana Vasconcelos, Paul Motian, Alphonze Mouzon, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Nils Petter Molvaer, Jon Christensen, Bendik Hofseth, Bugge Wesseltoft, Eivind Aarset and Nana Vasconcelos. In 2005 he started a Trio with Tommy Smith and Paolo Vinaccia. Their ECM release “Live at Belleville“ has received raving reviews around the world and the trio with Smith and Vinacia was claimed as the highlight of Tokyo’s International Jazz Festival in 2010 by the Japanese press. He was awarded “ Jazz Musician of the year 2008 “ from Academie du Jazz in Paris (Fr). His current quintet with Tommy Smith, Mattheu Michel, Marcin Wasilewski and Patrice Heral was featured on the London Jazz festival 2013.
