A flagstone path and avenue between the yews leads through the original cast iron gates to the adjoining hill upon which there are rights to graze livestock.     St. Clement’s Rhayader to Nantgwillt (5.2 miles, mostly tarmac, fairly flat) From the church gate turn right along Church Street past the garage, then turn right down Castle Road to the gate into the park. On your left is the site of Rhayader Castle built of wood in 1177 by Lord Rhys, Prince of Deheubarth. It was finally destroyed in 1231. Go through the gates into the park and follow the path down to the play area. Turn left along the bank of the river. On the opposite bank a waterfall enters the river, 100 yards on you will see the ruins of one of many flannel mills on this stretch of the Wye. Follow the path across a car park, between buildings to the main road. Turn right over Rhayader bridge. Alternatively, from the church turn right down Church Street and then right down Bridge Street to the bridge passing the Old Police Station (built 1870) and Tabernacle Chapel (originally built 1688) on the left. Peering over the left parapet of the bridge you will see the remains of the waterfall that gave Rhayader its name. Continue through Cwmdauddwr past the old School (1794-1978) next to St Bride’s Church on the left. Continue out of the village until you reach the Elan Valley trail (signposted Builth and Aberystwyth) and follow the cycle path all the way to Elan Village. The path follows the route of the railways that delivered provisions during the construction of the Elan Valley dams. On the way you will pass over Rhayader Tunnel nature reserve, home to Brown long eared, Daubenton’s and Natterer’s bats.

ELAN AND CLAERWEN VALLEYS, POWYS: HISTORICAL BRIEFING PAPER1 Angus Winchester and Eleanor Straughton (Revised version, May 2009) The case study centres on upland pastures in the Elan and Claerwen valleys, in the parish of Llansantfraid Cwmdeuddwr,2 Radnorshire (now in the modern county of Powys). The outer boundaries of the area under study coincide with those of the parish and embraced a territory of considerable antiquity, the commote of Cwmdeuddwr (literally ‘the commote between the two waters’, i.e. the rivers Elan and Wye). In the medieval period, most of the land within these bounds formed an upland grange of Strata Florida Abbey, ‘a large area of common pasture with isolated holdings.’3 The case study comprises two contiguous land units: the registered common land of Cwmdeuddwr Common (RCL 36), which lies along the north-east edge of the parish and is managed by the Cwmdeuddwr Commoners and Graziers Association; and the large area of de-registered hill grazing (RCL 66), within the catchment of the Claerwen and Elan rivers, which forms part of the Elan Valley Estate of Dŵr Cymru/Welsh Water.

    142. Chapter V Witchcraft as Words : Slander and Defamation Case Studies. For Richard F. Suggett.1 The majority of witchcraft cases which came before the courts in early modern Wales were witchcraft as words cases: cases in which a woman took another person to court for having said, before witnesses, that the woman was a witch. In the Courts of Great Sessions such cases were termed "slander". Some witchcraft as words cases were located in quarter sessions files but it was the Courts of Great Sessions which heard most of these cases. In the ecclesiastical courts in early modern Wales, witchcraft as words was termed "defamation", although the two should not be confused or approached, from an analytical persepctive, in the same way. Whilst the subject matter of the cases appears to be similar, the two types of court treated the case lodged before them in a very different manner as the motives of the participants presenting the case in the court of their choice were not similar. Before 1500, the secular courts did not use the term "defamation" and the temporal courts did not use the term "slander". Cases lodged in the secular courts were for a specific sum of money, the financial compensation which the slandered person was seeking from the slanderer. In the ecclesiastical courts, the defamed was seeking an acknowledgement of the defamation from the defamer and was lodging the case to seek punishment of whatever spiritual nature the court deemed sufficient punishment for the defamer. Mr David, who died on 7 November 1949, was a son of the owner of the foundry at Wisemans Bridge, near Saundersfoot. He was trained for the teaching profession at Carmarthen Training College and was subsequently appointed to various schools in Pembrokeshire, including the East End School, Pembroke, and the Coronation School, Pembroke Dock. He was a member of Trinity United Congregational Church, Pembroke Dock, for many years. He had an extensive collection of hymn books, Welsh and English, and his executor allowed the Librarian to select all those works of which copies were not already in the National Library.
