Brewery Beer ABV Style Tasting Notes Abbeydale Moonshine 4.30% Best Brewery Beer ABV Style Tasting Notes Abbeydale Moonshine 4.30% Best Bitter A pale straw-coloured premium bitter with a flora aroma leading to a predominantly citrus taste, with grapefruit and lemons and a bittersweet finish Abbeydale Absolution 5.30% Golden blonde Straw-coloured beer with tropical fruit aromas, toffee-apple and banana flavours, sweetish but not cloying 3.90% Golden blonde Additions of honey makes this ale a real moreish session beer with a huge AJ's Ales Stuck on Blondes hop punch of lemon and lime Amber Ales Chocolate Orange Stout 4.00% Stout/Porter Stout with chocolate malt, orange peel, vanilla pods and yet more orange is added into each cask, followed by a long slow maturation Brains Rev. James Rye 4.30% Best Bitter Full-bodied, warming ale brewed to a traditional recipe, it is rich in palate, spicy and aromatic Canon Royall White Rabbit One 6.70% Stout/Porter An initial collaboration brew between two of our local breweries which has produced a lovely dark stout at a strength where you can really taste the dark malts Canon Royall White Rabbit Two 4.50% Best Bitter A second collaboration brew between two of our local breweries which has resulted in a good mid strength drinking beer Castle Rock Black Gold 3.80% Mild A well-balanced dark mild ale with some bitterness, full-bodied, but not overly sweet Charles Wells Bombardier 4.10% Best Bitter Bombardier has a rich, tempting aroma of peppery hops and raisins, while the palate is dominated by more dark fruit, juicy malt and tangy hops Charles Wells Waggle Dance 4.00% Golden blonde Crisp, tart, citrus hop flavours lead the way, leaving honey restrained in the malt base. Refreshingly, a quaffable bitter with a firm hoppiness and a honey accent, rather than a thick, sweet honey ale Church End Grave Digger's Ale 3.80% Mild Dark black and red in colour, with a complex mixture of chocolate and roast flavours. For nearly 20 years, the big national beer expo has been held in Wellington in winter. Now, in its Beervana format, it continues to grow and bring more exhibitors and food stalls every year. The ongoing rise and rise of craft beer can be measured in the attendance figures and number of exhibitors these events attract. This year there’s a new component to Beervana – a trade expo before the public event opens. This shows the growing professionalism of the craft beer industry. Brewers who were supporting themselves with a day job are increasingly turning to full-time brewing and bringing a professional approach to their craft. Brewing, like every industry that produces or stores liquids, benefits greatly from economies of scale. Getting bigger doesn’t mean selling out – especially when you consider that New Zealand is much too small to have any big craft brewers on an international scale.
