“Ferrari can make drivers as well as cars” -

The Driver Academy aims to bring on talented youngsters and, as is often the case, takes its inspiration from a comment made by Enzo Ferrari: “I love to think that Ferrari can make drivers as well as cars.” The company’s founder often thought outside the box, surprising people with his very different approach. He did it with his cars that combined innovation with very powerful engines and he also took that approach with his drivers.

Driver Academy Driver who were given Formula 1 drives when they were virtually unknown. Then as now, Ferrari believes in the value of training its personnel and young drivers. In 2002, was given time to learn and progress with the Sauber Formula 1 team, before making his Scuderia Ferrari debut in 2006 as teammate to . The success of this method with the Brazilian driver led to the creation of the in 2009. Its first student was , who had just won the .

The programme really got underway in 2010, with the arrival of and , followed in 2011 by Sergio Perez, , and Brandon Maisano. Three years later, the student roster included , with Guan Yu Zhou joining in 2014 and in 2016 was on the books. It is a true academy for the sport, where its students are taught all aspects of their chosen profession. They also study the rules of the sport, the history of the team and legal matters related to racing. It involves a total immersion in the world of Ferrari and, over the years, many of the Academy students have gone on to race at a high level, with four students to date making it all the way to Formula 1. Currently the best known is Scuderia Ferrari Mission Winnow driver, Charles Leclerc.

2 Ferrari Driver Academy Asia Pacific/Oceania

Motorsport Australia has been selected to work with the Ferrari Driver Academy to run the Asia Pacific and Oceania regional selection program. Each year, drivers aged between 14 and 17 are invited to apply to be included the selection process. Drivers from countries named below will be eligible to apply for the Asia Pacific and Oceania program.

Countries included in the Asia Pacific and Oceania region of the Ferrari Driver Academy are: Australia, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Philippines, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and China.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will not be able to conduct an Asia Pacific and Oceania selection camp therefore candidates will be selected based on written applications.

The 2020 Ferrari Driver Academy process

2020 applicants will need to complete the application form attached to this document or found at motorsport.org.au/membership/ferrari-driver-academy.

Applicants are encouraged to supply a supporting document to their application. This supporting documentation can be no more than six A4 pages, detailing the drivers experience, and why they should be selected.

Completed forms and the supporting document must be returned to Motorsport Australia no later than 7 September 2020. Please note that each application must be endorsed by the drivers ASN.

The forms and supporting document will be assessed by a selection committee in early September. The two drivers selected will be notified no later than Monday, 14 September 2020.

The two selected drivers will compete against drivers from other regional academies from around the world at Ferrari’s Fiorano racetrack in . The winning driver from the various academies will then be offered a drive with FDA in a European Formula 4 Championship.

The two drivers selected from Asia Pacific/ Oceania (along with a parent or guardian where applicable) will need to be in Modena in Italy in late October (exact date TBC) for this camp. The selected drivers will need to provide their own travel and accommodation for the duration of the selection camp (and any required quarantine period). Any other costs of attending the FDA camp in Italy to be confirmed.
