EXP LO R E R Spring is often the season associated with renewal; however, it was this fall The Official Magazine of La Salle College High School that brought a sense of revitalization to the campus of La Salle College High School. The four-level, 40,000 square foot addition that opened in conjunction with the start of the 150th school year, enhanced the existing academic space and the new Marian Chapel brought a bona fide place of worship to the school President community. The restoration of the center courtyard provided the perfect bridge Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 between the new and original structures. The energy generated from this new Principal construction is matched only by the splendor of the building itself as visitors Joseph L. Marchese continually find themselves in awe of its beauty and features. Vice President of Institutional Advancement The renovations to the third floor of McClean Hall, which were completed Daniel L. McGowan in November – new windows and doors, walls, ceilings, lighting, HVAC, and lockers – have rejuvenated the once aging academic wing. The sequential Alumni Association President renovation of this building remains on schedule with the second floor due to Anthony J. Gillespie ’68 open in April and the first floor scheduled to be completed over the summer and Editor prior to the start of the 2009-2010 school year. The current construction projects Christopher M. Carabello ’82 will continue to revitalize La Salle College High School well into next year. Editorial and Production Assistance Fall also saw the renewal of an old rivalry with La Salle (and the Philadelphia Barbara Franks Catholic League) entering play in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Cathleen P. Winning Association (PIAA). For the first time since 1980, the winners from the Philadelphia Catholic League and Philadelphia Public League would meet to Contributing Writers Michael F. McCarthy, USA ’02 League Championships in Golf, Cross Country, and Football, the Explorers played for the City Championship in three sports and won two – Golf Photography and Cross Country. Greg Bobowski John J. Burns The September issue of Philadelphia Magazine featured La Salle College High Christopher M. Carabello ’82 School as one of the top schools in the area for technology as well as service. Davor Studios Only a handful of schools received recognition in more than one category and David DeBalko the article spoke to the uniqueness of La Salle’s programs and offerings. The Kerper Studios National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of ten seniors from Michael Maicher La Salle College High School who are semifinalists in the 2009 competition for Brother James Rieck, FSC ’57 Merit Scholarship Awards. With an additional twenty National Merit Commended United States Army students, La Salle reemerged as the leader of National Merit recognized students amongst Catholic and private secondary schools in the Delaware Valley. I argue that scrutiny of Hughes’ career and the products associated with him expose the inadequacy of established approaches to cinematic authorship and New Hollywood cinema. By mounting a historically grounded investigation of Hughes’ career, his status within the cinema industry, and his work as a commercially successful and agenda-setting filmmaker, I aim to reevaluate existing perspectives on post-1970s mainstream popular U.S.

Issue 144 AUGUST 30TH, 2021 I and so many of us are saddened by the passing of Nanci Griffith at 68. Some singers are good, some are truly great, and the rare few can move you to tears. Nanci Griffith was one of the rare few. Charlie Watts is no longer with us. To say we lost a giant (at age 80) would be to seriously understate the man’s titanic talent and influence. Watts was the Rolling Stones' driving force, a rock-steady powerhouse, yet one who also played with an inimitable sense of jazz-informed swing. The rock world will never again be the same. We are honored to announce a new contributor: Ed Kwok. Ed spent his formative years taking things apart. He subsequently trained as an electrical engineer at Imperial College London in the 1980s, and got caught up in the high-end wave. His early ambition was to be an analog audio designer, but he ended up in digital military electronics. Ed then retired from engineering and relocated back to Hong Kong to concentrate on a financial career. He enjoys the computer audio space, considering it partly science and partly high-end art. Ed founded the Asia Audio Society (asiaaudiosoc.com) with some like-minded friends, with the aim of crystallizing the essence of high-end audio reproduction. In this issue: Ray Chelstowski interviews Stephen Duffy, whose post-Duran Duran band the Hawks has been an undiscovered gem – until now. J.I. Agnew begins an interview series with Martin Theophilus and the remarkable Museum of Magnetic Sound Recording.
