Michelle E. Ouellette/ Marc A. Ouellette Make Lemonade: The Pleasantly Unpleasant Aesthetics of Playing ›Portal‹ This paper takes its title and an important cue from the folksy premise of the axiom, »When life gives you lemons, make lemonade«. The paradoxical posi- tion that something unpleasant can be turned into something pleasant offers not only an entry point for an engagement with the Portal series, but also an opportunity to consider directly the applicability of Friedrich Schiller’s model of three inherent drives to the study of video games. Thus, our paper will sit- uate Schiller’s aesthetic principles within existing game studies scholarship, will examine how these apply to the Portal series’ implementation of rules, play and affirmation, and will consider the ramifications of the commentary which inheres in the process. Most importantly, the three drives – normative, sensuous, and play – map directly onto the rules and the rewards of the games. As well, this pattern appears in the form and in the content of the games so that the ways in which rules, affirmation and their linkage through play produce en- joyment also make the Portal series obvious examples of good art. In the case of affirmation, the fact that these rewards are through negative affirmation makes no difference. GLaDOS and Wheatley’s taunts and barbs, and the jour- ney on which they lead us, engages both the cognitive and affective responses of the players. The pleasure of this game is located in both of these responses; we are driven to think about the game, and the game makes us feel (bad).

COMPANION GAMING: IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF GAMING EXPERIENCES THROUGH INTERCONNECTED GAMEPLAY A Thesis by JACOB MACLIN ROSS Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE Chair of Committee, Tim McLaughlin Co-Chair of Committee, Jinsil Hwaryoung Seo Committee Member, Dennie Smith Head of Department, Tim McLaughlin December 2013 Major Subject: Visualization Copyright 2013 Jacob Maclin Ross ABSTRACT In recent years, video game publishers and developers such as Ubisoft, Bioware, Microsoft, Capcom, Wideload Games, and NeatherRealm have all attempted to increase brand engagement by means of increased interconnectivity between games of the same franchise, a form of gameplay called companion gaming. In 2011 Chris Early, one of the pioneers of companion gaming, set forth seven principles defining the qualities that exemplify companion game design. This study offers a history of companion gaming, an explanation for how companion gaming improves the quality of the gaming experience, and a modification and extension of the aforementioned principles. Through the use of an analysis of pre-existing companion games, user studies of said companion games, and interviews with industry professionals who have experience working on companion games, a determination of best practices in developing connected gameplay experiences is defined in the form of the “Companion Gaming Design Principles.” Along with the unification of existing knowledge on companion games pertaining to different techniques for designing connectivity, companion game/base game platform combinations, and examples of what has come before, these principles will enlighten developers and publishers wishing to create companion gaming experiences in the future by highlighting the most important aspects of companion game design and how each can affect the user’s experience.

MAINTAINING OUR RAGE: INSIDE AUSTRALIA’S LONGEST-RUNNING MUSIC VIDEO PROGRAM. By Narelle Gee BA/DipEd (University of NSW) A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Creative Industries) School of Media, Entertainment, Creative Arts, Film, Screen and Animation Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology 2015 Key Words ABC Music Television Alternative Music Music Videos Australian Broadcasting Corporation Popular Music Australian Cultural Industries Production Cultures Australian Television Public Service Broadcasting Creative Labour rage Cultural Production Television Broadcasting Media Culture Television Production Music Industry TV Programs 2 Abstract The thesis, “Maintaining our rage: inside Australia’s longest-running music video program”, takes a reflective and reflexive narrative journey across the decades of rage, from its 1987 creation through to the program’s current incarnation, providing unique insider perspectives and affordances. Australia’s longest-running music video program is also, arguably, the most sustained such program globally (Bodey, 2012; Helper, 2012). Despite its longevity, there has been scarce scholarly analysis of rage, and of what has underpinned its unusual endurance; many music video programs have come and gone during the program’s long-held tenure. How has rage survived the vicissitudes of network programming – particularly within the capricious space of music video programming - and maintained its cultural place and role, for more than a quarter of a century? The significance of this research is that it explores rage’s unusual durability, examines the program’s unique elements, and answers three key research questions: What has been the history of rage as a program and a cultural entity? What has been the cultural significance of rage? How did rage create a shift within the music industry ecology of Australia? This thesis presents an insider’s account of rage, exploring it within its ABC TV and public broadcasting context.

  • “Good Game, Well Played”: the Toxic Effect of Competitive Video Games
“Good Game, Well Played”: The Toxic Effect of Competitive Video Games An Honors Thesis (HONR 499) by Robert Coleman Thesis Advisor Amanda Ballenger Ball State University Muncie, Indiana July 2019 Expected Date of Graduation July 2019 Abstract Video games are a wonderful way to pass the time. When done in moderation, they can lead to increased hand-eye coordination, higher critical thinking skills, and can even expand social circles. Online video games, however, are a modern parent’s worst nightmare. Multiplayer video games with an ESRB rating of Teen or even Everyone can easily turn out to have Mature situations because of one simple reason: players must interact with total strangers in order to enjoy the game. Toxic environments are generated through a combination of relying on ELO for player self-identification and various scenarios created by problem players. Although competitive video games can be directly related to sports in many cases, including issues with problem players, the same deterrents and punishments may not be applicable. Acknowledgements I thank my advisor and friend, Amanda Ballenger, for guiding me on this rite of passage. Her endless patience, diligent suggestions, and positive attitude are among the only reasons why I was able to push myself and finish this thesis. Without her, I would have likely given up on this project long ago. I also thank my wonderful fiancée, Allie Hartman, for making her own thesis writing look so effortless. It triggered my own competitive instincts that drove me to try and match her pace. Although she still beat me by a mile, I would not have been nearly so productive without her.
