W uj ęciu tym u żywany przez badaczk ę termin fan- tasy nie odnosi si ę do stosunkowo nowego gatunku literatury popularnej, lecz odgrywa wa żką rol ę – na równi z mimesis – w kreowaniu literackich wyobra żeń rzeczywisto ści, co uwidacznia si ę w bardzo zró żnicowanych utworach literac- kich, poczynaj ąc od sag islandzkich, a ko ńcz ąc na science fiction . W niniejszym tomie „fantastyczno ść ” rozumiana jest w podobnym, równie ogólnym sensie, co pozwala autorom bada ć relacje, w jakie wchodzi z szeroko pojmowanym „reali- zmem” nie tylko w fantastyce, lecz równie ż w literaturze głównego nurtu i in- nych nietekstualnych narracjach. W fantastyce, obejmuj ącej wszelkie narracje zawieraj ące elementy fanta- styczne, nadnaturalne czy futurystyczne, powi ązania pomi ędzy fantasy a mime- sis mog ą przybiera ć wielorakie formy i by ć stosowane w ró żnych celach. W Rhetorics of Fantasy (2008) Farah Mendlesohn podejmuje namysł nad rela- cj ą pomi ędzy tymi dwoma trybami w konwencji fantasy , wyró żniaj ąc jej cztery odmiany 2. Utwory typu portal-quest (np. Opowie ści z Narnii C.S. Lewisa czy Fionawarski gobelin Gaya Guvriela Kaya) przenosz ą bohaterów z rzeczywisto- ści przedstawianej w konwencji realistycznej do świata fantastycznego, podkre- ślaj ąc ich odr ębno ść . Fantasy intruzyjna, obejmuj ąca zarówno powie ść gotyck ą, jak i horror, przedstawia światy podobne do rzeczywistych w stylistyce reali- 1 K. Akcja utworów okre ślanych przez Mendlesohn jako im- mersyjne (np. Dworzec Perdido Chiny Miéville’a) osadzone s ą w świecie w pełni fantastycznym, który musi by ć jednak wewn ętrznie spójny i logiczny pomimo faktu, i ż jego zasady odbiegaj ą od tych obowi ązuj ących w świecie em- pirycznym. Z kolei fantasy liminalna (np. Wśród obcych Jane Walton) zaciera granice pomi ędzy elementami fantastyki i realizmu, wywołuj ąc w czytelnikach efekt niepewno ści czy te ż wahania odno śnie ich proweniencji. O ile jednak stu- dium Mendlesohn daje ogl ąd ró żnych sposobów konstruowania pierwiastka fantastycznego i jego funkcjonowania w tek ście, nie wyczerpuje oczywi ście wszystkich mo żliwo ści omawiania relacji pomi ędzy fantastyk ą, realizmem i rzeczywisto ści ą. Literatura fantastyczna, bez wzgl ędu na to, czy jej akcja osadzona jest w pseudo średniowiecznym wyimaginowanym świecie, czy te ż w odległej za- awansowanej technologicznie przyszło ści, charakteryzuje si ę du żym potencja- łem podejmowania tematów istotnych dla czasów współczesnych i kreowania alternatyw zastanej rzeczywisto ści. Odnosz ąc si ę do science fiction , rozumianej jako „literatura wyobcowania poznawczego” ( literature of cognitive estrange- ment ), Darko Suvin dowodził, że polega ona na wyabstrahowaniu z empirycznej rzeczywisto ści pewnych jej aspektów celem ukazania ich w nowej perspektywie „implikuj ącej nowy zbiór reguł” 3. O ile w science fiction przesuni ęcia te musz ą by ć „spójne logicznie i metodyczne; (…) naukowe w tym sensie, że na śladuj ą, wzmacniaj ą i wyja śniaj ą proces poznania naukowego” 4, koncepcj ę wyobcowa- nia poznawczego odnie ść mo żna do wszystkich rodzajów fantastyki, która zaw- sze zaprasza czytelników do konfrontacji z zastan ą rzeczywisto ści ą poprzez immersj ę w wyobra żonym świecie, rządzonym odmiennymi zasadami. W zwi ązku z tym, utwory fantastyczne mog ą by ć postrzegane jako swoista for- ma konstatacji rzeczywisto ści empirycznej i próba stworzenia jej alternatywy – czasem w formie wyidealizowanej i nostalgicznej wizji przeszło ści, kiedy in- dziej poprzez stworzenie obrazu dystopijnej czy postapokaliptycznej przyszło- ści. Artykuły w niniejszym tomie podejmuj ą prób ę omówienia zwi ązków fanta- styczno ści z konwencj ą realistyczn ą z jednej strony i rzeczywisto ści ą z drugiej, oferuj ąc wgl ąd w procesy i efekty wynikaj ące z takich interakcji. 3 D.     REHeapa Winter Solstice 2016 By Lee A. Breakiron A WORLDWIDE PHENOMENON Few fiction authors are as a widely published internationally as Robert E. Howard (e.g., in Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Yugoslavian). As former REHupan Vern Clark states: Robert E. Howard has long been one of America’s stalwarts of Fantasy Fiction overseas, with extensive translations of his fiction & poetry, and an ever mushrooming distribution via foreign graphic story markets dating back to the original REH paperback boom of the late 1960’s. This steadily increasing presence has followed the growing stylistic and market influence of American fantasy abroad dating from the initial translations of H.P. Lovecraft’s Arkham House collections in Spain, France, and Germany. The growth of the HPL cult abroad has boded well for other American exports of the Weird Tales school, and with the exception of the Lovecraft Mythos, the fantasy fiction of REH has proved the most popular, becoming an international literary phenomenon with translations and critical publications in Spain, Germany, France, Greece, Poland, Japan, and elsewhere. [1] All this shows how appealing REH’s exciting fantasy is across cultures, despite inevitable losses in stylistic impact through translations. Even so, there is sometimes enough enthusiasm among readers to generate fandom activities and publications. We have already covered those in France. [2] Now let’s take a look at some other countries. GERMANY, AUSTRIA, AND SWITZERLAND The first Howard stories published in German were in the fanzines Pioneer #25 and Lands of Wonder ‒ Pioneer #26 (Austratopia, Vienna) in 1968 and Pioneer of Wonder #28 (Follow, Passau, Germany) in 1969.

There are also other websites which discuss librarians in comics and provide a place for scholars to start. Going as far back as the Atlantean age the librarian is seen as a seeker of knowledge for its own sake. For example, in Kull # 6 (1972) the librarian is trying to convince King Kull that of importance of gaining more knowledge for the journey they about to undertake. Kull is unconvinced, however. In the graphic novel Avengers No Road Home (2019), Hercules utters “Save the Librarian” which indicates just how important librarians are as gatekeepers of knowledge even for Greek Gods.

XX wieku ma swoje ścisłe uwarunkowania po- lityczne, ale zarazem determinujący go kontekst literacki. Nie sposób nie zauważyć, że w nowoczesnej epoce samoświadomość społecz- na i polityczna obfitowała w literackie konteksty związane ściśle ze społeczną autorefleksyjnością. Tam, gdzie literatura aspirowała ku krytycznej intelektualnej niezawisłości (a więc także w państwach autorytarnych i totalitarnych, na zasadzie kontestacji oficjalnie gło- szonej ideologii), malało znaczenie wyobraźni klasycznie utopijnej, a rosła świadomość antyutopijna czy wręcz dystopijna. Dlatego kiedy mówimy o źródle literackim polskiej odmiany fantastyki socjologicz- nej, nie sposób nie wymienić nazwisk George’a Orwella i Aldousa Huxleya jako klasyków antyutopii, pytając jednocześnie o odniesie- nia społeczne. Sytuacja kultury PRL-u uniemożliwiała bezpośrednią kontestację politycznego systemu, otwierając możliwości metonimiczne, bogacące tradycyjny od XIX wieku repertuar ezopowych sposobów uprawiania literatury społecznie zaangażowanej i krytycznej zarazem. Tak było w ramach kultury wysokiej na przykład z gatunkiem tzw. paraboli historycznej, wykorzystującej kostium przeszłości do problematyzo- wania współczesnych tematów społecznych oficjalnie zakazanych.     Focus on German Studies 22 Interview with Professor Mike Perschon, MacEwan University Alex Hogue University of Cincinnati May, 2015 Your dissertation focuses on understanding steampunk as an aesthetic that transcends media and genre. How did you become interested in steampunk and what lead you to pursue this research direction? When I entered my PhD, one of the professors said, “You are not here to do your life’s work. You are here to get a degree – then you do your life’s work.” That was great advice, because it’s very easy for people to never finish their dissertation because they’ve become emotionally invested in it at some level of perfectionism. I had already chosen steampunk as my topic when I heard that advice, but it reinforced my decision. I first heard of steampunk when I was working on a paper on alternate history during my MA course work, when I read Steffan Hantke’s I wish I could say I had some deep, rigorous purpose, but the decision to pursue steampunk as a research direction was entirely mercenary. I was looking for something to study where there hadn’t been much done in the way of secondary literature, so I could be part of the first wave of scholarship on my topic. There was only one article on steampunk in the University of Alberta’s database in late summer of 2008, and when my thesis advisor for my MA said she’d sign on for my PhD if I did steampunk, it was a pretty easy decision. Plus, I had seen people writing dissertations on what I’d call more traditional topics while I was working on my MA, and they didn’t look like they were enjoying themselves.

Breakiron ONE-SHOT WONDERS By definition, fanzines are nonprofessional publications produced by fans of a particular cultural phenomenon, such as a literary or musical genre, for the pleasure of others who share their interests. Readers themselves often contribute to fanzines by submitting their own articles, reviews, letters of comment, and fan fiction. Though the term fanzine only dates from 1940 when it was popularized within science fiction and comic book fandom, the first fanzines actually date back to at least the nineteenth century when, as a uniquely American development, literary groups formed amateur press associations or APAs in order to publish collections of poetry, fiction, and commentary. Few, if any, writers have had as many fanzines, chapbooks, and other ephemera dedicated to them as has Robert E. Howard. Howard himself self-published his own typed “zine,” The Golden Caliph of four loose pages in about August, 1923 [1], as well as three issues of one entitled The Right Hook in 1925 (discussed later). Howard collaborated with his friends Tevis Clyde “Clyde” Smith, Jr., and Truett Vinson in their own zines, The All-Around Magazine and The Toreador respectively, in 1923 and 1925. (A copy of The All-Around Magazine sold for $911 in 2005.) Howard also participated in an amateur essay, commentary, and poetry journal called The Junto that ran from 1928 to 1930, contributing 10 stories and 13 poems to 10 of the issues that survive. Only one copy of this monthly “travelogue” was circulated among all the members of the group.
