International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 7, No. 3; March 2017 Topkapi Palace as a Moral and Political Institutional Structure in the Ottoman Palace Organization Samed Kurban Research Assistant Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Department of Public Administration Dumlupınar University Kutahya/Turkey Abstract The Topkapı Palace is a building built after the conquest of Istanbul, where the Ottoman Empire was ruled and where the sultans and their families resided until the mid-19th century. The palace, which has been in service for a period of about 400 years in the Ottoman Empire's lifetime of six centuries, functions as a living space of Ottoman administration and politics and ethics with the practices, customs and traditions that took place during this period. Therefore, it is a very important reference for the Ottoman State. It must be said that this position is very different from a state or presidential residence existing in modern states. The rules, which have been strictly respected for centuries and the existence of a system that operates on a regular basis, place Topkapı Palace in a privileged position. It is possible to see this characteristic in the organizational structure of Topkapı Palace. Especially the Enderun and Harem constructions, which are located in the third yard within the palace, have very important functions in the Ottoman State regarding the distinction between public and private spaces. In the study, the place where Topkapı Palace has taken as a moral and political institutional structure in the Ottoman State shall be revealed in terms of the three main gates of the palace and the courts that these gates open to. -

They conquered Constantinople the same year when the Hundred Years’ (116-year) War in Europe ended. While the mutual con- tacts were characterized by exchange and cooperation interrupted by periods of war, particularly in the seventeenth century, the Treaty of Karlowitz (1699) marked a new stage in the history of Ottoman-Polish relations. In the light of the common Russian danger Poland made efforts to gain Ottoman political support to secure its integrity. It re-evaluates the scattered sources on Ottoman approaches to the ‘folkloric vampire’ by taking the phenomenon as an early modern regional belief widespread in the Balkans, Central Europe and the Black Sea regions. In doing so, it aims to illuminate fundamental points, such as the definition of the folkloric revenant in the eyes of the Ottoman authorities in relation to their probable inspiration—Orthodox Christian beliefs and practices—as well as some reference points in the Islamic tradition. -

Findley, Advisor Jane Hathaway Alan Beyerchen Copyright By Serdar Poyraz 2010 i Abstract My dissertation, entitled “Science versus Religion: The Influence of European Materialism on Turkish Thought, 1860-1960,” is a radical re-evaluation of the history of secularization in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. I argue that European vulgar materialist ideas put forward by nineteenth-century intellectuals and scientists such as Ludwig Büchner (1824-1899), Karl Vogt (1817-1895) and Jacob Moleschott (1822-1893) affected how Ottoman and Turkish intellectuals thought about religion and society, ultimately paving the way for the radical reforms of Kemal Atatürk and the strict secularism of the early Turkish Republic in the 1930s. In my dissertation, I challenge traditional scholarly accounts of Turkish modernization, notably those of Bernard Lewis and Niyazi Berkes, which portray the process as a Manichean struggle between modernity and tradition resulting in a linear process of secularization. On the basis of extensive research in modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish and Persian sources, I demonstrate that the ideas of such leading westernizing and secularizing thinkers as Münif Pasha (1830-1910), Beşir Fuad (1852-1887) and Baha Tevfik (1884-1914) who were inspired by European materialism provoked spirited religious, philosophical and literary responses from such conservative anti-materialist thinkers as Şehbenderzade ii Ahmed Hilmi (1865-1914), Said Nursi (1873-1960) and Ahmed Hamdi Tanpınar (1901- 1962). -

Gelvin, Chair This dissertation traces the establishment of a binary between work and laziness from 1839 to 1920, the last century of the Ottoman Empire. Over this period, Ottoman society experienced an epochal shift in the discourses and practices of work. This study examines this shift, first, by exploring how concepts of work and productivity were moralized, socially practiced, militarized and politicized in a non-European modernity project, and second, by demonstrating how this emergent discourse, formulated as an issue of ‘national’ importance, became a constitutive element of the general nation-formation process within the last Ottoman century. I examine the configuration and development of the moralistic discourse of an ‘Islamic work ethic’ as an integral part of creating productive citizens. To do this, I consult an underutilized source, morality books, which display the connection between the mobilization for productivity, modern ii conceptualizations of body and time, and nation formation. Emphasizing the role of social practice in emergent discourses, I investigate how the bureaucratic reforms of the state in the last Ottoman century played a pivotal role in the transformation of concepts and practices of work. -

Handling these processes within the framework of Sultan Süleyman’s deeds and choices, the main argument of this study is that the reputation of Sultan Süleyman in the 1520s was the result of the convergence of his actions and his projected image. In the course of this study, main events of the first ten years of Sultan Süleyman’s reign are conceptualized in order to understand the elements employed first in making a Sultan out of a Prince, then in maintaining and enhancing the sultanic image and authority. As such, this dissertation examines the rhetorical, ceremonial, and symbolic devices which came together to build up a public image for the Sultan. Contextualized within a larger framework in terms of both time and space, not only the meaning and role of each device but the way they are combined to create an image becomes clearer. -
Beşir Fuad (1852-1887) and the Introduction of Philosophical Materialism Into the Ottoman Intellectual Life

Published by American Research Institute for Policy Development DOI: 10.15640/rhps.v2n3-4a1 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.15640/rhps.v2n3-4a1 Beşir Fuad (1852-1887) and the Introduction of Philosophical Materialism into the Ottoman Intellectual Life Serdar Poyraz1 Abstract On 5 February 1887, around nine o'clock at night, Beşir Fuad, a former officer in the Ottoman army and an important Turkish intellectual who had contributed significantly to the debates about science and literature in the late Ottoman period, committed suicide in the private study of his house in Istanbul. Before committing suicide, he wrote letters to his friends, explaining the reasons for his action, as well as a brief note to the police, informing them that his death was a well-planned suicide and that they should not further bother his wife with a criminal investigation. Moreover, he decided to turn his suicide into a scientific experiment, and after injecting cocaine into his left arm and carefully cutting his veins in four different places with a razor, he calmly wrote on a sheet of paper about the effects of bleeding on the body and the feeling and sensation of death that it induced. Diverging significantly from the first generation of Tanzimat-era Ottoman intellectuals who also advocated the study of western science but justified their positions by explicitly or implicitly referring to the Islamic tradition, Beşir Fuad never used any religious arguments whatsoever to justify his position on science. -
