Image: Elsa Wood Monmouthshire Rare Plant Register 2019 MONMOUTHSHIRE VICE-COUNTY 35 RARE PLANT REGISTER This edition updates the first Rare Plant Register produced by Trevor Evans (Evans 2007). Some additional species have been included whereas others have been removed. The reasons for these changes are given below. Rare and Scarce species In the RPR by Evans (2007) there are several species which have since been found to be more widespread in vc35 than previously thought. These, Ranunculus lingua Greater Spearwort ( widely planted), Iris foetidissima Stinking Iris, Echium vulgare Viper’s Bugloss, Chrysosplenium alternifolium Alternate-leaved Golden Saxifrage, Crepis biennis Rough Hawk’s-beard, Myriophyllum spicatum Spiked Water-milfoil , Samolus valerandi Brookweed, Frangula alnus Alder Buckthorn, Poa angustifolia Narrow-leaved Meadow-grass, Puccinellia distans Reflexed Saltmarsh Grass and Populus nigra ssp.betulifolia Black Poplar are no longer included in this revised RPR as occur at more than 10 sites. Moreover, Anacamptis pryamidalis Pyramidal Orchid occurs at almost 40 sites. The revised RPR recognises locally rare species, both Natives and Archaeophyes, as those that are found in up to three sites in VC35 and locally scarce species which occur in up to 10 sites. Several have been moved from locally rare to locally scarce e.g. Anthemis cotula. Species such as Littorella uniflora Shoreweed with 11 records are therefore not included. Some other species, whilst being recorded at more than 10 sites, are considered under threat in a GB or Welsh context and therefore these have been included in this Register. This category includes Neottia nidus-avis Bird’s-nest Orchid, Oenanthe fistulosa Tubular Water-dropwort, Sagittaria sagittifolia Arrowhead, Platanthera chlorantha Greater Butterfly Orchid and Wahlenbergia hederifolia Ivy-leaved Bellflower. Some Neophtes are also included if they are of conservation concern in a GB or Welsh context such as Parentucella viscosa Yellow Bartsia and Verbascum nigrum Black Mullein. Sites are based on actual sites e.g. a particular quarry or on an area within a 1km square or a tetrad. Species with a linear distribution such as Crithmum maritimum Rock Samphire are shown in a map form. So too are some widespread or locally widespread species such as Spergula arvensis Corn Spurrey and Euphorbia serratula Tintern Spurge. For the majority of species, selected pre 2000 records are included, but are shown in grey type. For those species that we have added to the Rare Plant Register (i.e. not included by Evans 2007), we have not yet listed the pre 2000 records. 3 Monmouthshire Rare Plant Register 2019 Recorders AK Andy Karran JPW Julian Woodman RPr Rebecca Price AW Adrian Wood JVHS John Syms RSKE RSK Environmental BC Birches Consultancy JW Jan Winder SDSB Sam Bosanquet BE Barry Embling KD Kevin Dupe SiJ Sian Jones BD Brian Dockerill KW Karen Wilkinson SJ Sorrel Jones BJG Brian Gregory JND Jim Davies SJT Stephanie Tyler BH Bob Hallett JSav Jonathan Saville SP Sarah Powell CC Charles Conwy JS Jane Sedgely TAJ T.A. The Gatehouse This is the entrance to Abergavenny Castle, it is called the Gatehouse. It is a barbican gatehouse . A barbican was a wall or tower which protected a castle from attack. The Gatehouse today When Abergavenny Castle was first built, over 900 years ago, the gate was just a simple opening in the castle walls. Castle entrance in about 1087 Castle with Gatehouse in about 1300 Illustrations by Michael Blackmore Walk through the Gatehouse and loolookk closely at the walls around and above you. What can you see? Abergavenny Castle Trail The Gatehouse On the first floor above the gate were comfortable rooms for the Constable of the Castle and his family to live in. The Constable was in charge of the Castle when the Lord was away. The room had a fireplace, large windows and access to the walkways along the walls, as well as a winch to lower or raise the drawbridge.
