IS UGLY THE NEW SEXY? The Complexities of Latina Sexuality on Ugly Betty Tanya González ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent Mexican American executive assistant who lives in Queens, New York, but works at Mode in Manhattan. An adaptation from the Colombian telenovela,Yo soy, Betty la fea, this television show works on a fairy tale premise: the ugly protagonist with a heart of gold will eventually obtain happiness by virtue of her goodness. However, Ugly Betty offers a protagonist with multiple love interests, constantly involving her in a variety of love triangles, begging the question, “Is ugly the new sexy?” The following analysis of Betty as a sexual subject demonstrates that Ugly Betty, within the limits of Hollywood representation, offers complex subjects instead of one-dimensional types. The show’s use of a Latino camp aesthetic continually introduces elements, like Betty’s sexuality, that push the limits of how we perceive Latinas/os on television and in everyday life. As a result, Ugly Betty surprisingly illustrates Chicana/o and Latina/o feminist theories about identity construction. ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty is a global iteration of the Colombian telenovela1 phenomenon Yo soy, Betty la fea (1999-2001). Ugly Betty, which premiered Fall 2006 and will end Spring 2010, stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent, sweet, perky young Latina2 who lives in Queens, but works at Mode, a fictional representation of Vogue magazine. As the title suggests, people perceive Betty as ugly because she is not model-skinny; wears glasses, braces, and bangs; and has poor fashion sense.

I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007.

Januar 2012 Für Familienfans und Familienskeptiker Wenn eine Frau im mittleren Alter in einem Superhelden-Kostüm in einem Maisfeld herumläuft, dann ist das im Normalfall seltsam. Im Fall von "The Middle" ist das aber nicht seltsam, sondern witzig und völlig in Ordnung. Handelt es sich doch um eine waschechte Sitcom, die ihr komödianti- sches Potential nicht selten aus gerade solch ent- und verrückten Situationen zieht. Die Frau im Superhelden-Kostüm heißt Frankie Heck und ist in der Regel, sagen wir mal – ein wenig gestresst. Sie hat einen Job, einen Ehemann, drei Kinder, die alle irgendwo zwischen Früh-, Vor- und Spätpubertät stecken. Kein Wunder, dass Frankie sich auf ihrem neuen Führerschein- foto kaum wiedererkennt und sich fragt, was nur aus der gutaussehenden Frau auf dem alten Führerscheinfoto geworden ist. Gut, wenn dann der Gatte den Unterschied der beiden Fotos so plausibel wie feinsinnig zu er- klären versteht: "Na ja, damals warst du jung und sexy und darauf gespannt, was das Leben dir bringen wird – und jetzt, tja, jetzt weißt du’s." Freunde kann man sich aussuchen, seine Familie bekanntlich nicht. Im Fernsehen ist das zum Glück anders, hier kann man sich seine "TV- Familie" sehr wohl aussuchen – der Fernbedienung sei Dank. Und es gibt gerade im Sitcomgenre einige Fernseh-Familien, die viele Zuschauer – wie ihre eigene Familie – mit all ihren Fehlern und Überspanntheiten ins Herz geschlossen haben.
