OxFORD: ro6 S, Aldate's Street NEw YORK: THOMAS WHITTAKER, 2 and 3 Bible House First printed, Igo8 GENERAL PREFACE T was said, I believe by the late Bishop I Lightfoot, that the study of history was the best cordial for a drooping courage. I can imagine no study more bracing and exhilarating than that of the modern expansion of the Church of England beyond the seas during the past half century, and especially since the institution of the Day of Intercession for Foreign Missions. It is only when these matters are studied historically that this expansion comes out in its true proportions, and invites comparison with the progress of the Church in any similar period of the world's history since our LORD'S Ascension into heaven. But for this purpose there must be the accurate marshalling of facts, the consideration of the special circumstances of each country, race and Mission, the facing of problems, the biographies of great careers, even the bold forecast of conquests yet to come. -

The Role of the Mother Tongue in English Language Teaching in China
The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking. – Albert Einstein (1879-1955) Acknowledgements I was born during a time when the destructive “Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution” had just ended in China and when it was still extremely rare for girls to receive higher education in the country. However, my dear grandfather had given me the nickname “Dr. Wu” before I could speak my first word. I have grown up with high expectations from my family. Although today my grandfather can no longer share part of my life with me, I really wish that he could be proud of me, and be happy to see my dream come true, a dream that was also his. Though the writing of a Ph.D. dissertation is an individual work and only my name appears on the cover of this dissertation, I could have never reached the heights and explored the depths without the wholehearted support and generous help of a lot of genuinely inspiring people. They have made the successful completion of this dissertation possible and because of them my Ph.D. -

Triumph after Catastrophe: Church, State and Society in Post-Boxer China, 1900-1937 Abstract The Boxer Rebellion of 1900, originally a regional anti-Christian and anti-foreign movement in Western Shandong, turned to be a sensational international event, prompting eight great powers to dispatch a large number of troops for its suppression. Ironically, soon after the catastrophe, Christianity entered into a golden age as the number of Chinese converts skyrocketed while the religion enjoyed an unprecedented growth. It was only temporarily halted by the Japanese invasion in 1937. This paper probes the complicated relationship among church, state and society during this historical era. It tries to figure out factors leading to the booming enterprise as it argues that a number of reasons had contributed to the new phenomenon, such as governmental preferential policies, liberal political and social milieu, missionaries’ new strategies, indigenous Christian efforts, and tenacious accommodations by Chinese believers. -

DOMESTIC and FOREIGN MISSIONARY SOCIETY
THE DOM ESTIC and FOREIGN MISSIONARY SOCIETY OF THE, I^OTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN T h 3 I u NITE,D SIlnES OF AME,RICA Annual Report of the Hoard of Managers Annual Reports on Domestic and Foreign Missions With Reports o f Bishops Published at the Church Missions House Fourth Avenue and Twenty-second Street, New YorK, 1902 NEC, REPORT OF THE BOARD OF MANAGERS TO THE ELEVENTH MEETING OF THE MISSIONARY COUNCIL With Accompanying Documents. T h e Board of Managers hereby respectfully submits to the Missionary Coun cil its annual report for the fiscal year which ended August 31st, 1902. Contained in this volume will be found the report on Domestic Missions and the report on Foreign Missions; the annual reports of the Bishops of the several Missionary Districts; together with the report on Trust Funds and the reports of the Recog- nized Auxiliaries. These, taken together, must serve to give the Council a compre hensive view of the progress, prospects and present condition of the work of the Society. The year now closed has been a notable one in several respects: The work has enlarged by reason of the action of the late General Convention in erecting the new Missionary Districts of Salina, comprising the western part of the Diocese of Kansas, Porto Rico (including Yieques), Honolulu and The Philippines, and also the division of the territory of the former Missionary District of Shang hai and the Lower Yang-tse Valley into two Missionary Districts— the Missionary District of Shanghai, comprising the Province of Kiangsu, and the Missionary District of Hankow, comprising the Provinces of Ngan-hwei and Hupeh and the portions of Kiang-si and Hunan adjacent to the Yang-tse river, as also by the natural and in some parts of the field the rapid increase of the work.
