ABOUT THE COMPOSER GIOACHINO ROSSINI (FEBRUARY 29, 1792 – NOVEMBER 13, 1868) EARLY YEARS The composer of La Cenerentola was born in Pesaro, Italy, on February 29, 1792 (a leap year). For a time, his parents earned a living traveling from one small opera house to another-his mother as a singer and his father as a horn player in the orchestra. Gioachino was occasionally left behind with his grandmother and his aunt in Pesaro. He had only a little education in reading, writing, grammar and arithmetic. Much of the time he ran wild. When Gioachino was 12, his parents ended their travels and settled in Bologna. As a boy he studied music with a talented priest. He also began to play the violin and viola and to compose sonatas and other pieces. Because of his beautiful singing voice, he was often invited to sing in churches in Bologna, and he was soon able to earn extra money playing harpsichord for opera companies in and around Bologna. At 14, he began more formal music studies at the Conservatory. At the end of his first year, he was chosen to write a cantata that was performed in public. Unfortunately, he had to leave the Conservatory after four years in order to earn money for his family. All his life he was to regret the fact that he did not receive more musical training. SUCCESS Rossini's first paid composition was a one-act comic opera for a theatre in Venice. La cambiale di matrimonio (The Marriage Contract), written in less than a week, earned him one hundred dollars-an enormous sum for the 19-year-old Gioachino! The opera was a success, and he kept writing. -

This effervescent comedy gets a 1930s-style makeover and takes us behind the beaded curtain of a sultan’s harem. Hilarity ensues when the Amelia Earhart-style heroine Isabella crash-lands on the Algerian coast while attempting to rescue her beloved Lindoro from the Bey of Algiers, Mustafà. Pittsburgh Opera’s updated production includes an elaborate storybook set, bold costumes and a hot air balloon that provides the heroine’s dramatic departure in the finale. Music Director Antony Walker conducts. Vivica Genaux returns to Pittsburgh Opera in one of her signature roles as the feisty heroine Isabella. -

Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) Italian, ingenious, inspired. Gioachino Rossini occupied an unrivalled position in the Italian musical world of his time, winning considerable success relatively early in his career. He was the first of the great 19th century Italian opera composers and brought opera into the public consciousness and even today his music still rings true. Rossini had already written ten operas before he was 21, and eventually composed 39 major stage works, though in his last thirty years he wrotcve nothing new. He did try to become a composer of serious operas, but it will always be his comic operas, The Barber of Seville (8.553436) and Cinderella (8.660191-92) that his fame will rest. Label Cat. UNITEL and CLASSICA present Gioachino Rossini Sigismondo Rossini Opera Festival Conductor Michele Mariotti Staged by Damiano Michieletto SigismondoGioachino Rossini Early Rossini has something buoyant, vibrant, youthful about it – even when it is a “dramma Aper musica” such as “Sigismondo”, a dark swirl of an opera revolving around a mad king and his delusions, his wife who is allegedly dead but very much alive, the fate of Poland and much more. Premiered in 1814 but rarely played thereafter, the work deserves to be resur- rected, if only for its many beautiful and original arias and ensembles, some of which were such brilliant little masterpieces that he reused them in his later successes such as “Il turco in Italia”, “La Cenerentola” and “Il bar- biere di Siviglia”. The work was given its first performance from the critical new edition at the 2010 Rossini Opera Fes- Conductor Michele Mariotti tival in Pesaro, “a small Italian variant of Bayreuth and Orchestra Orchestra del Teatro Salzburg” (Süddeutsche Zeitung).
