Geomatics 2017 (2).indd 4 2017-09-27 11:05:19 Foreword Foreword Time is the best and objective verifier of effects of research activities. Undeniable proof of that is a growing number of highly rated articles published in the internationally renowned Geomatics, Landmanagement and Landscape quarterly. For five years already its initiators, editorial board, authors and readers are pleased to find that the journal’s prestige is growing, its ranking in the Index Copernicus database is on the rise and that its articles are more and more frequently quoted in well ranked foreign periodicals. The quarterly earned this position by presenting up-to-date, interdisciplinary topics on land management, agricultural geodesy, environmental and landscape protection, as well as urban planning and engineering geodesy. Five years is a small jubilee but a big editorial event. Achievements to date and quality assessment of the journal’s rank are known in the international market of scientific publications that deal with the above-mentioned subjects. The statement is confirmed by the twelve papers of the current issue. The initial presents a topical and vital issue of classification of forests on the basis of images from the QuickBird-2 satellite. The comparative analysis of data acquired from satellite photogrammetry and field research showed that the results are accurate in 92–99%. The second article describes a technique and technology of designing cycle paths based on data from aerial laser scanning (ALS). The presented methodology of planning cycle routes allows to connect the most important places in towns as well as places of tourist interest. Another study describes an innovative, autonomous system of monitoring gird- ers’ deflection in roofs of large halls exposed to destructive loads of heavy snow. The intervention monitoring of quickly developing deformations is a challenge to be faced by engineering geodesy in the era of more frequent abnormal winter conditions with record snowfall and tragic outcome of construction disasters due to roof collapse in large halls or arenas. Changes in structure of land coverage related to diverging from the city are discussed by authors of the next article that focuses on a study of four evaluation clusters. The research also confirmed that advancing urbanization is strongly influenced by anthropogenic activity in suburban areas. Another interesting paper gives an analysis of multitemporal changes of the envi- ronment in the context of construction projects and forecasts their potential anthropo- genic effects. The study of the Landsat multitemporal satellite images made it possible ! Geomatics 2017 (2).indd 5 2017-09-27 11:05:19 6 Foreword to examine the morphology of the substrate conditions of river valleys of the San, Wisłok, and Mleczka. The sixth article makes a survey of literature review, research methodology and socio-economic situation of the Podhale region and shows results of empirical analysis of infrastructure potential impact on the social and economic devel- opment of the studied region. The process of excluding areas from agricultural produc- tion due to construction of new roads in Poland is presented in the seventh article. The authors evaluate the cost of acquisition of remnants and lands that has been set aside and reflect on a possibility of restoring these areas to agricultural production. In the next article the results of monitoring the use of Internet application covering local plan of spatial development for Tomice municipality have been presented, furnishing users, customers and authors of the plan with precious information. In the ninth publication the authors discuss the principles of land value estimation in consolidation proceed- ings and after detailed study of ample research material come to the conclusion that in Poland there is no uniformity in the way land value is assessed and appraised. The tenth article is an assessment of the influence of atmospheric intensity on the wooden facade of a building by visualization method. The results of empirical research supported a thesis that assessing the impact of atmospheric factors by means of 3D modeling is sufficiently accurate. The penultimate paper discusses the role of green areas and parks in urban spaces, as exemplified

Chapter Polytrichum formosum and Vaccinium myrtillus as Phytoindicators of Pollutants from Long-Range Emissions of Environmentally Important Protected Areas (The Tatra National Park, the Central Western Carpathians, Poland) Joanna Korzeniowska Abstract The study determined the influence of altitude on the content of heavy metals in selected plant species of the Tatra National Park (TNP). The metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were identified in two species of plants, i.e., in the moss (Polytrichum formosum Hedw.) and in the blueberry leaves (Vaccinium myrtillus L.). Plant sam- ples were collected in two test areas every 100 meters of altitude of the area, starting from 1,000 m above sea level in the Lake Morskie Oko test area and from 1,100 m above sea level in the Kasprowy Wierch test area, and ending at 1,400 m above sea level for Lake Morskie Oko and 1,550 m above sea level for Kasprowy Wierch. The two test areas are different from each other in terms of natural and physico-geographical conditions (geological structure, landform, climatic condi- tions, etc.). The conducted research shows that the content of heavy metals in the studied species of plants increases with the altitude above sea level. Both P. formosum Hedw and V. myrtillus L. can be good phytoindicators in mountainous areas. In the tested plant species, the contents of heavy metals were also found to be higher than the natural contents, which is most likely related to long-range emis- sion. Long-distance transport of pollutants causes that important natural protected areas, such as the Tatra National Park, are exposed to excessive pollution, including the accumulation of heavy metals in plants.

PRACE GEOGRAFICZNE, zeszyt 112 Instytut Geografii i Gospodarki Przestrzennej UJ Kraków 2003 Czesław Guzik, Jan Leśnicki DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL SETTLEMENT IN PODHALE Abstract: In their paper the authors discussed the historical development of the settlement inthe Podhale Region, since the Middle Ages to the contemporary epoch, against the natural conditions and evolution of the political situation. Various functional types of rural settlement were shown, with the spatial patterns and traditional forms of farm architecture, observed in this part of Poland. Key words: Podhale, rural settlement, history, architecture, spatial pattern 1. An outline of history Natural conditions in the Podhale region were less favourable for the settlement than those in other parts of Poland. In the Middle Ages eve the discussed area was covered by forest, its flat zones were swampy and marshy, the severe climate and poor soils were also discouraging factors. Moreover, this peripheral region was dangerous and needed a military protection. The first settlers came from the Vistula river valley, along its tributaries. Thepermanent settlement has been developed here since the 13th c. Its proves are names of rivers and streams in documents, i.e. Biały and Czarny Dunajec, Wielki and Mały Rogoźnik, Piekielnik, Leśnica and Poroniec (Dobrowolski 1935). The above mentioned settlers originated from the regions of the early cities – those of Cracow, Bochnia and Sandomierz. There were three main routes of their migration – the Cracow route, along the Raba and Skawa valleys, the Sandomierz route (the earliest one) along the Dunajec river valley, and the Szczyrzyc route. The latter one started at Szczyrzyc monastery, the Cisterian one.

Zamenhofa 1a, 33-300 Nowy Sącz, Poland e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The aim of the work was to analyse the changes in the effectiveness of municipal waste management for the period 2009–2015, in one of the largest counties in the mountainous region of southern Poland. Socio-demographic fac- tors, as well as changes as a result of the implementation of the provisions of Directive 1999/31/WE and Directive 2008/98/EC into Polish legislation, are considered. Over the period of seven years, there was a significant increase in the amount of municipal waste generated in the county of 32%, with a simultaneous increase in the number of inhabitants and a decrease in the number of individuals registered as unemployed. An increase in the amount of waste that is non-selectively collected and the number of properties covered by collections of municipal waste oc- curred before there were any changes in waste management. However, after the changes, the amount of six types of waste selectively collected (paper and cardboard, plastic, metal, bulky, WEEE) increased, with a significant 40% share of glass waste reference to the selectively collected waste. This may result from the changes in waste management.

The aim of the paper was to present the development of farm buildings associated with social and economic changes farm buildings in the Polish part of Spisz over the last half of the century, based on the example of the village of Trybsz. On the basis of field inspections and satellite images, for se- lected farms a questionnaire form was developed. Thanks to the obtained data, it was possible to establish the intended use of farm buildings, year of their construction, materials used and their technical condition. It was found that the unique architectural character of village Trybsz is related mainly to farm buildings. The rural landscape of this village is dominated both in number and form, and its appearance reflects the dynamic evo- lution of the landscape and local architecture caused by the agricultural transformations that have taken place over the last 50 years. Spisz farm buildings with galleries are an original form of folk architecture, which has been shaped by historic and modern economic factors. This form gives farm utility buildings and whole farms an attractive appeal, additionally emphasised by numerous contemporary architectural modifications.
