Computer Facilities The campus offers centralized computing services through the Office of Information Technologies (OIT). All matriculated students are required to have an OIT Account. This Account provides students with access to: a campus wide network accessible from residence halls, public buildings and off-campus, an email account, the campus online course management system, and the campus wireless network. Registration, grades, and student information are available online. The campus also offers tools and training to faculty who wish to integrate technology into their curriculum. 3. Study Abroad The University offers more than 500 domestic and international exchange programs in over 65 countries to more than 700 students each year. Programs are available in Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, Caribbean, Ireland, Latin America, Russia and East Europe, Western Europe, Scandinavia, and the United Kingdom. 4. Honor Societies National Honor Societies 30 5. Special Academic Programs Commonwealth Honors College, an honors college, offers a dynamic curriculum, including interdisciplinary seminars, enriched honors courses, and opportunities to link academics and community outreach. It offers students a small college environment with the resources of a major university. Commonwealth Honors College resources include special housing opportunities, a computer laboratory, and academic support services, such as the Office of National Scholarship Advisement which assists students applying for prestigious fellowships. Also, students can participate in undergraduate research with the opportunity to present their work at an annual academic conference. Unique majors include the Bachelor’s Degree with Individual Concentration , through which students may design their own interdisciplinary major under faculty guidance. University Without Walls (UWW) – This program offers non-traditional students an opportunity to earn flexible, individually designed B.A. or B.S. degrees which can be interdisciplinary in nature. Residential Academic Programs (RAP) allow students to combine living and learning experience through residentially based academic programs. They include Arts & Humanities, Careers in Education, Social Justice, Sustainable Environment, and TAP (Talent Advanced Program) in a variety of disciplines. Other academic opportunities include national and international student exchange programs, internships and opportunities to engage in community service through a growing number of service learning courses in academic departments. Students can enroll at no extra charge in courses at Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges through the Five College

    Five College 50th Anniversary Special Project Fund PURPOSE To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Five College Consortium. The consortium was founded in May 1965 as Four Colleges, Incorporated. In September 1966, the consortium welcomed the newly founded Hampshire College, amending its purpose and changing the corporate name to Five Colleges, Incorporated. “The primary purpose of the corporation is to promote the broad educational and cultural objectives of Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and the University of Massachusetts by encouraging and fostering closer cooperation and understanding among the faculty, staff and students of the five institutions, and by promoting and developing opportunities for joint lectures, concerts, plays, games and other activities, for sharing the use of the educational and cultural facilities of the five institutions and for a better understanding of the peoples, cultures and institutions of other nations.” GUIDELINES Eligibility: Open to any Five College collaborative program or group (including, but not limited to centers, councils, committees, departments, majors, certificate programs, faculty seminars, administrative collaborations, Museums10, Learning in Retirement, and student organizations). We demonstrate that outreach without the explicit goal of promoting a specific resource or service can be an effective use of time, and can build social capital that shares the goals of traditional outreach. Involving all staff in this outreach effort was a valuable team building experience, exposing the depth of our interests and expertise to each other and to our campus community. Fisher as “a relentless inquisitiveness about the world around and beyond us, a continual scrutiny and questioning of experience” (Fisher 2000).

AWA is a non-profit, international arts organization dedicated to the principle that everyone can create art. We hope that by working with the National Endowment for Art’s program, Art Works Literature, we can create a platform for black women’s voices in Pioneer Valley. In response to the lack of representation of black women authors in the publishing industry, I came up with the idea of publishing a literary journal dedicated to celebrating these marginalized voices. I am an English major receiving my certificate in Creative Writing and attaining a minor in African-American Studies. Along with my experience as an Editorial Assistant for jubilat, my knowledge of grammar, style, organization, and effective communication will allow me to handle the responsibility of creating the new journal. By partnering with AWA which “was founded in 1983 with two missions: to publish and support the work of emerging and established writers; and to cross boundaries of class, race, and other difference by using writing as a tool of empowerment, giving voice to the silenced,” our two organizations can expand the notion of what is possible and valuable in a poem and can enlarge the American literary canon.
